Volvo is a Swedish automaker that was established in 1927 as a subsidiary under AB SKF, a ball bearing manufacturer. The first Volvo vehicle was produced in 1927 named the ÖV 4, with an estimated of 280 vehicles built. The current product line today consists of a S60, S90, V60, V90, XC60, and XC90. The company is known for its safety as all vehicles go through stringent safety standards. Volvo was the first automaker to establish its own safety research unit called the Traffic Accident Research Unit. The company also invented the three-point safety seatbelt in 1959, which are standard in cars today.
The first production facility opened outside of Sweden was the Volvo Halifax Assembly plant located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The company was ultimately sold to the Ford Motor Company on January 28, 1999 for US$6.45 billion, and was subsequently sold to the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in China for US$1.8 billion in August 2010.
