Volkswagen (VW) is a German automaker, part of one of the largest auto groups and the largest in Europe. There ten brands under the Volkswagen Group including Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Škoda, Scania, and MAN. VW also owns a 19.9% interest in Suzuki Motor Corporation as of January 15, 2010. It was founded in 1937 and was often referred as “The People’s Car”, as prefix “Volks” is the German word for People. The slogan “Das Auto” was in alignment as it means “The Car” in German.
VW was first introduced in Canada in 1952 at the Canadian National Exhibition with much public enthusiasm. The current model line includes the Beetle, Golf, Eos, CC, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Touraeg, and Routan.
Volkswagen Type 1, also known as the Beetle was first produced in 1938 and would later be responsible for increasing the popularity of the company. The model design platform is also the most manufactured, with over 22 million units produced.
The Touraeg is a four wheel drive crossover SUV that was a joint venture project by VW, Audi and Porsche. The Touareg platform is shared with the Audi Q7 and the Porsche Cayenne with cosmetic and technical differences between each model. It was first released in 2002 and is loaded with features such as Hill Descent Assist (HDS), an available TDI diesel engine, and an 8-speed transmission with Dynamic Shift Program (DSP).
VW is a leader in innovative technologies, employing advanced systems such as the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system found in the Tiguan, CC, and Toureg. Other innovations include the Dual Clutch Gearbox (DSG), an Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS), and an Engine Braking Assist (EBA) system.
The company has also won numerous awards and recognition, with some examples including the 2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year for the Passat and Best New SUV/CUV by the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) for the 2012 Toureg TDI. Five 2012 models have also been awarded the Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including: the Golf GTI, Golf 5-door, Tiguan, Jetta, and Touareg.
