Quick Look

The 2015 Lincoln MKX is not a terrible vehicle, but in a market filled with superb luxury crossovers, it just doesn’t cut it. Its performance is awful, while its looks and interior tech features feel unremarkable at best. The only real highlight of this crossover is the amount of space it offers for passengers and cargo alike.

Full Review

The automotive market has become a ruthless and competitive place, which is good news for us, the consumers, since this means that the automakers have to do their best in order to grab our attention. This is where the 2015 Lincoln MKX comes in with its subpar delivery in just about every respect. It’s a perfect example of how not to build a vehicle for today’s market. The luxury crossover segment is teeming with excellent vehicles, and while the MKX is not bad by any means, it just doesn’t live up to the current standards – and that means it’s not worth getting

On the outside, the Lincoln MKX has the same overall shape as its Ford Edge sibling. However, it’s just a touch more in-your-face, with a hefty split-wing grille at the front and wraparound taillights in the back. The MKX is 87.5 inches in width, which make it wider than its rivals and allows it to have a bold, squat appearance. However, you will feel this as soon as you start driving since maneuvering this beast into tight spots or a tiny garage can truly challenge your driving skills. But, the MKX’s “heftiness” does not stop there, since even the base front-wheel-drive models feature 18-inch aluminum wheels, which you can update to big 20- and even 22-inch wheels.

Inside, the 2015 MKX has a spacious five-passenger cabin that can afford 39.6 inches of rear-seat legroom. The interesting aspect of the cabin is that all the trims have leather seating and wood trim, but you can opt for carbon-fiber weave to make things a little more modern. At the front, the seats are both wide and comfortable, being separated by a wide armrest. The instrument cluster contains twin, customizable 4.2-inch screens, with a prominent eight-inch colour screen in the centre of the dash. MyLincoln Touch system looks all nice and futuristic, especially with the Sync. However, using it can be a bit of a nightmare since it’s far too convoluted and frustrating to be enjoyable (unfortunately). One of the better aspects of the interior is its cargo flexibility, since the already spacious rear seats can fold in a 60/40 split to allow for more room.

Under the hood of the MKX is where the real mess truly resides. It has only one engine option, which is a 3.7-litre V6 that can produce 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, which is only choice you can get. However, you can connect the engine either to front-wheel-drive or optional all-wheel-drive system. Acceleration and braking are unremarkably average, especially in a segment where vehicles can reach high speeds as soon as you tap their gas pedal. The transmission, with it sluggish downshifts, can be unresponsive, which is a bit of a pain. Fuel economy numbers aren’t too impressive either, with the all-wheel-drive model carrying the ratings of 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. They used to be praised, but since Lincoln has made no alterations for quite some time now, vehicles like the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK have managed to best it.

Overall, the 2015 Lincoln MKX is a disappointment across the board. While we won’t give it the absolute worst score, we cannot recommend it either. If you truly run out of options, then you can give it a look, but it’s very likely that you won’t be too impressed with this crossover.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2015 MKX SUV's wide exterior translates to a spacious 5-passenger cabin that includes 39.6 inches of rear-seat legroom. All models feature leather seating, and wood trim is available for a more traditional look or, conversely, a carbon-fiber weave for a more modern approach. For cargo flexibility, the rear seats fold in a 60/40 split. In front, the passenger seats are separated by a wide armrest. The instrument cluster houses twin, customizable 4.2-inch screens. And then there is the prominent 8-inch color screen in the center of the dash. The Sync with MyLincoln Touch system looks impressive, but operating it is anything but simple.

Safety features:

Standard safety equipment in the 2015 MKX iteration should once again include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, front fog/driving lights, Sync-interfaced emergency assistance and Ford’s MyKey programmable speed- and audio-level limiting, aimed to curb the rambunctiousness of the teenage driver. A post-collision safety system and remote antitheft alarm are also expected to return, while optional safety features will doubtless again include adaptive cruise control and adaptive high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights.
