Quick Look

The 2015 Lincoln MKC defies expectations by being a solid luxury compact crossover that delivers excellent exterior design, comfortable cabin and a wide array of tech features. The highlight is undoubtedly the vehicle’s appearance that, despite being based on the Ford Escape, manages to resemble the Audi Q5 a bit more.

Full Review

Though the Lincoln brand has never been particularly popular, the 2015 MKC is actually a very decent compact luxury crossover. We attribute that to the fact that it’s based on the fantastic Ford Escape vehicle – though that also doesn’t mean that the two are identical. In the past, Lincoln was more than happy to take off the Ford badge and slap on one of its own, but that’s not the case here. In fact, the Lincoln MKC has more in common with the Audi Q5, thanks to its unique liftgate and integrated taillights. The wonders don’t stop there, however, since the MKC also delivers a fine cabin and slick interior tech features, making it a superb vehicle selection.

On the outside, the Lincoln clearly targets the younger consumer base with the MKC, emphasizing the “New Lincoln” look that the automaker is trying to push. Lincoln achieves this through the graceful split-wing grille with high-efficiency HID headlights on each side at the front and a full-width LED taillight and wraparound rear hatch at the back. The overall profile is nicely complemented by a flowing roofline, sharp shoulder creases and elegantly-sculpted body panels. All the versions of the MKC feature an Approach Detection System that automatically lights the car when the owner is within eight feet. It even has colour-keyed mini-lamps in each door pull. The Reserve model also offers a hefty 12-square-foot glass Vista Roof.

On the inside, the 2015 MKC is well-finished and proportioned, carrying itself like a true luxury vehicle. Not bad for a first car from the new Lincoln Design Studio. The dash-mounted push-button transmission controls allow for more storage space, and the new MyLincoln Touch system now has easy-to-use knobs and buttons, which replace the clunky slider controls. At the front, you will find power bucket seats, which offer plenty of comfort and support. That said, the fixed-position 60/40 folding rear seating is a bit lacking, especially when it comes to legroom, making it more appropriate for kids. The cargo area is somewhat lacking too since it’s only 53.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is less than what you would get with Audi and BMW. With the seats up, you get even less space – 25.3 cubic feet.

Under the hood, the new Lincoln MKC provides a selection of two turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engines. The standard one is a 2.0-litre variant that produces 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque – it’s exactly the same engine as the one in the Ford Escape. The other engine is a 2.3-litre variant that can yield 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It’s the same engine that you can find in the 2015 Ford Mustang. Both powertrains are connected to a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with manual-style control and paddles on the steering wheel. When fitted with the optional Trailer Tow Package, the MKC’s towing numbers are 3,000 pounds for any configuration of the 2.0-litre engine and 2,000 pounds for the all-wheel-drive version of the 2.3-litre. These numbers are well are well below the Q5’s 4,400-pounds. In return, however, both MKC engines deliver superb fuel economy.

Despite its flaws, the 2015 Lincoln MKC is a fine vehicle. It’s not the best in its class, but if you’re looking for something that manages to stand out a little, then this is it.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Lincoln MKC doesn't at all offer a V-6; but it does better than that, really. With a new 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, this is a model that moves very rapidly (think around seven seconds to 60 mph), with plenty of power to spare for quick takeoffs, or no-sweat highway passing.

That engine, which is slated to go into the 2015 Ford Mustang later this year, is one of the highlights that makes the MKC special. With a twin-scroll turbocharger, its power delivery is more immediate—and on par with the V-8s of less than a decade ago, really. Its sound is a bit coarse when accelerating, but a balance-shaft system keeps it vibration-free, and generous noise insulation plus active noise cancellation altogether keep the cabin quiet.

Interiors and Special Features:

As the first vehicle from the new Lincoln Design Studio, the 2015 MKC's well-finished cabin has a definite "class-above" character. Its dash-mounted push-button transmission controls yield additional storage space while the new MyLincoln Touch system features user-friendly knobs and buttons instead of annoying slider controls. Up front, the MKC's power bucket seats offer laudable comfort and support. However, its fixed-position 60/40 folding rear bench is less accommodating, particularly with respect to legroom for adults. Maximum cargo space – expanding from 25.3 cubic feet to 53.1 with the seatbacks folded – also falls well below its Acura, Audi and BMW rivals.

Safety features:

The 2015 Lincoln MKC comes standard with stability control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, a driver knee airbag and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard is MyKey, which allows parents to set electronic parameters (such as maximum speed and radio volume) for when teenagers are behind the wheel. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a frontal collision warning with emergency brake priming are optional.
