Quick Look

The 2015 Lincoln MKT delivers a solid performance, spacious cabin and comfortable seats. However, just like its predecessors, this year’s model is one ugly baby, so those looking for a more attractive SUV might need to look elsewhere. Other detractions include costly options and poor access to third-row seats. However, none of those things make the MKT a truly bad vehicle, which means that it’s at least worth checking out.

Full Review

The Lincoln MKT has never been the most attractive full-size luxury crossover SUV on the market, but fortunately it has also never been a bad one. So while the controversial design carries over into 2015, so do all the good things. The main attractions are its solid engine, spacious interior and comfortable seats. So, if you can get past the look, then you might just be treated to a solid vehicle here.

On the outside, the 2015 MKT has the same chassis as the Ford Flex, but with its curvaceous body it couldn’t appear more different from its more square-like Ford cousin. One of its most attractive features is at the front – in the form of a huge and grand split-wing grille. On the sides, the MKT sports muscular bulges and a high beltline that rises even more aft the rear doors, which gets in the way of interior visibility. On top of that, the MKT’s backside seems much longer than necessary for its 19- or 20-inch wheels. The neat power-operated tailgate makes access to the cargo area very, very easy, which we always welcome. The vehicle also features a glass roof in case you want some extra sunlight (or moonlight) in the car. We will fully admit that this look is not for everyone, so if you think it’s ugly, then there’s nothing here that will change your mind.

Inside, the MKT is impressive even among other three-row vehicles. It’s spacious, luxurious and highly adaptable – being available in six- or seven-passenger configurations. If you go for the six-passenger option, you will get two big captain’s chairs in place of a three-person bench in the second row. For more luxury, you can add heating and cooling function to the twin chairs – if a lot of legroom and support are not enough for you. The third-row seats are power-foldable and spacious enough for adults – though they are hard to get at times. At the front, both the driver and passenger benefit from comfortable seats that also provide a commanding view. There’s also a touchscreen infotainment system – which is expected in a luxury vehicle such as this one – which controls navigation, climate and audio functions. While it’s still a little too complicated to use, it improved for the better this year. Behind the third seating row, you get a decently-sized cargo area, which you can further expand by folding the seats.

Under the hood, the Lincoln MKT offers a selection of two V6 engines. One is a naturally aspirated 3.7-litre in the base model, which produces 303 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The MKT EcoBoost gets a smaller but more powerful twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 that generates 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. But, no matter which engine you choose, it will be connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. While the base engine is just enough to move this heavy SUV with relative ease, the EcoBoost engine can accelerate this puppy from zero to 100 km in under seven seconds. Front-wheel drive is standard in the base model, while the EcoBoost comes with all-wheel drive. 87-octane gasoline will work for both engines, but if you want to squeeze as much performance out of the EcoBoost as possible, then the 91-octane is recommended. The MKT also has very decent towing capabilities, being able to pull up to 4,500 pounds.

Overall, the 2015 Lincoln MKT is a decent luxury SUV. It will not blow you away with its looks or even its telematics, but its performance is solid, and its cabin is both comfortable and spacious. It’s definitely not our top pick, but we think it’s worth checking out all the same.

Power and Performance:

The MKT is offered two ways. You can have it with front-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V-6, or in all-wheel-drive form, with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6. Neither will leave you wanting for the Sixties-era V-8s of Lincolns past.

Models with the 3.7-liter six used to be the more sedate of the two, but this year they get twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), to raise output to 303 horsepower (35 more hp than last year) and 278 pound-feet. Based on what we've experienced of this engine in other vehicles, like the nearly identical Flex, it feels surprisingly strong through a six-speed automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The MKT's interior shines even compared with other premium 3-row SUVs. Spacious, luxurious and versatile, it's available in 6- or 7-passenger configurations. In 6-passenger form, two big captain's chairs replace a 3-person bench in the second row. For ultimate coddling, the twin seats can be had with heating and cooling functions. The power-foldable 3rd-row seats, meanwhile, are roomy enough for adults. In front, the comfortable driver and passenger seats afford a commanding view. A touch-screen telematics system controls navigation, climate and audio functions, and its formerly complicated operation has been improved. Cargo space is commendable, and can be further expanded by folding the rear seats.

Safety features:

The 2015 Lincoln MKT benefit from a whole set of various safety features, including traction and stability control system, six airbags and ABS braking. Some of the optional safety equipment involves adaptive cruise control, advanced collision warning, lane-departure warning and cornering headlamps.

The MKT has earned top grades from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for moderate overlap, side-impact and roof-strength tests, which effectively makes it into the organization’s Top Safety Pick.
