Quick Look

The 2014 Scion xD returns to market with an updated display screen for its already respectable audio system. While the xD may not excel in any of the specific categories that small hatchbacks aim for, it comes at a great price and is highly customizable.

Full Review

The 2014 Scion xD adds a 6.1-inch touchscreen display to its standard audio system. While it may not excel in any of the specific categories that compact hatchbacks are known for, such as outstanding fuel economy, great utility or sporty handling, the xD shouldn’t be written off quite yet. This vehicle comes at a very affordable price and is highly customizable for those looking to personalize their ride.

The Scion xD is a four-door small hatchback. In 2014, this car’s exterior look may not be as fresh as it used to be, but the ability to customize will continue to make this car appealing. The xD has a boxy body with a squat stance, which is created by the short hood and high beltline (where metal meets window glass). The rear hatch opens upwards, which makes for easy cargo-loading. The xD is available in a single trim level. Standard exterior features on this trim are 16-inch steel wheels, but there is an array of dealer-installed accessories to choose from. Personalize your exterior by adding a rear spoiler or a funky two-tone paint job.

The cabin of the xD is not anything luxurious, but that’s why you are buying a Scion. The entertainment and climate controls are located logically in the center stack for a tidy look. The dash of the xD is a little disorienting as the speedometer and tachometer share the same circular gauge, but spin in opposite directions. The seating of this car is moderate, as tall drivers might have difficulty getting in and out due to upright seating and minimal legroom.

The tall roof, however, does offer ample headroom. Rear-seat passengers will enjoy a spacious ride as the rear bench reclines and adjusts back and forth.

Standard interior features include air-conditioning, cruise control, full-power accessories, a tilt steering wheel, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity as well as a six-speaker CD sound system with a 6.1-inch touch screen display and an iPod/USB interface. Interior dealer-installed upgrades include remote engine starter, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a cargo cover, a center arm rest, a navigation system, a premium sound system, satellite radio, carbon-fiber trim and TRD performance parts.

The main selling features of this vehicle are its great audio system and the ability to customize. Scion vehicles are built for buys who love their music and for the cash, the xD will not disappoint. The standard audio system comes with a 6.1-inch display screen and USB/iPod integration, which is unique to cars in this price bracket. This system is even upgradable if you want to add navigation and smartphone audio app integration. The different dealer-installed options also make this car highly customizable, which is really nice, if you want to personalize your vehicle.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front active head restraints.

Powering the Scion xD is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Buyers have the option of a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual six-speed goes from 0 to 97 km/h in just 8.4 seconds, which is pretty quick for the class. Fuel economy is below average, however, with a combined rating of 8.11 liters per 100 kilometers.

Overall, the 2014 Scion xD is an okay consideration for the budget-conscious buyer that wants something easily customizable. Unfortunately for the Scion, there are far better cars to consider in the compact hatchback class.

Power and Performance:

Powering the 2014 Scion xD is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 128 hp and 125 pound-feet of torque. Buyers may choose either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

In Edmunds testing, a manual-equipped xD accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, making it considerably quicker than most competitors, with only the turbocharged Sonic nipping at its heels. Fuel economy is below average, however, at an EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined (27 city/33 highway) with either transmission.

Interiors and Special Features:

The xD's minimalist interior features shades of dark gray with lots of matte-finish metallic trim. Entertainment and climate controls are arranged logically on the center stack and flow down to a nesting space for phones and iPods (with a USB port close by). The optional BeSpoke audio system, which also includes navigation, is designed to run an iPhone app that consolidates Facebook, Twitter, Yelp and Internet radio.

We can't say we're fans of the xD's odd instrument panel, which is divided into three partitions with a disorienting speedometer/tachometer sharing the same circular gauge. As the speedo needle spins clockwise, the tach needle climbs toward it from the opposite hemisphere.

The seating position is very upright, and taller drivers might have trouble getting comfortable due to limited legroom and a steering column that tilts but doesn't telescope. Headroom is generous, though, and rear passengers will enjoy ample space thanks to a reclining seatback and fore/aft-adjustable bench. Unfortunately, the xD stiffs you on cargo space. Its 35.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity (with the rear seats folded) falls short of what you'll get in most rivals; the Honda Fit, for example, offers 57.3 cubes.

Safety features:

Standard safety features on the 2014 Scion xD include antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and front active head restraints.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing, the xD was deemed "Good" (the highest score) in moderate-overlap frontal offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. Its seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

In Edmunds braking testing, the xD stopped from 60 mph in a respectable 123 feet.
