Power and acceleration aren’t its strongest suits, but thanks to the coupe’s perfect weight balance, low centre of gravity and superb handling, it’s a sheer delight to drive at high speeds. Once you get behind the wheel of the Scion FR-S, you’ll quickly realize just how fast and graceful it really is – to the point that it will feel like an extension of your own body.

That said, when it comes to special features, the 2014 Scion is a bit of a disappointment. All it includes are Bluetooth, keyless entry and climate control. There’s also the option of getting premium audio with apps capability, but that’s about it. There’s nothing particularly bad about any of these features, but the fact that there are so few of them is underwhelming.

So, if the lack of special features is a bit of a turn-off, then maybe the presence of practical safety equipment will win you back. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the car top “good” ratings in all categories, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded it with five stars. Its most notable features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes as well as stability and traction control. There aren’t any fancy features, like a rearview camera, but the ones that are there work well, which is all that really matters.

What’s important is that the 2014 Scion FR-S delivers in the areas that make a car great. The 2014 Scion FR-S is a four-seat sporty coup that impresses with its curves and sleekness without being completely overwhelming. It features certain traditional design features, such as an old-school long hood and short deck, which endow this car with its sporty looks. It also has a wide grille opening, triangular vents in the lower fascia and slick curves that flow from front to back.

The 2014 Scion FR-S comes with just one engine – the 2.0-litre flat four-cylinder that can produce 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. It can be paired either with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, so there’s no shortage of options in this area. Unfortunately, it seems like the engine lacks both power and torque – even for a lightweight vehicle such as this. That said, the it makes up for this with its drivability.

What separates this car from other similar vehicles is the fact that it feels great when you accelerate to that 100-km point – which takes about seven seconds. The steering is sublime, the weight balance is perfect and the centre of gravity is low; all these features make for one of the most fun driving experience you may ever go through. It’s clear that the FR-S was built for people who enjoy driving for the sake of driving. So, if that describes you, then this car is something you should definitely consider.

When it comes to fuel economy, the new Scion FR-S is undeniably disappointing. The EPA rating for the manual transmission variant is 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The automatic is rated at 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. The latter clearly offers better fuel economy, but it’s not even as good as what you’d find in far more powerful cars. For instance, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray carries the rating of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, while being able to produce 455 horsepower. However, given the modest price of the 2014 Scion, the lack of impressive fuel economy is most certainly forgivable.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Scion FR-S delivers a very simple-looking, businesslike cabin that won’t wow you right away, but will grow on you over time once you realize how functional it is. In the end, the only reason you get into your car in the first place is to drive it – not to listen to the radio or navigate through a fancy interface. This cabin emphasizes the driving experience above all else.

It comes with a standard touchscreen audio system, which has been added this year, but you can also opt for the upgraded BeSpoke system, if you want the navigation functions and smartphone app integration. Other features include fold-flat rear seats, a first-aid kit, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, USB/Bluetooth/auxiliary inputs as well as manually adjustable six-way driver and four-way passenger front seats. Optional features involve a carpeted trunk, cabin floor mats and an ashtray kit.

The seating is comfortable and spacious enough to match what’s on offer from other car manufacturers, but once again, you won’t be too impressed (not at first anyway). The front seats provide good support, but not at the expense of comfort – since even long trips are easy to tolerate. The back seats on the other hand are a bit lacking since they feature very little legroom and head space, so adults would probably want to avoid those. The trunk is tiny as well, being only 6.9 cubic feet. That said, you can fold the back bench flat – which is useless anyway – to expand the trunk space. Overall, the cabin is satisfactory enough to be useful, but its competitors have done a much better job of it, so keep that in mind.

Safety features:

The safety features in the 2014 Scion FR-S are very much on par with what’s on offer from everyone else, despite being very basic. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the car with five stars, which is the highest rating a car can get. In the meantime, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given it “good” ratings in all categories, but it is yet to receive a rating for the small overlap frontal test.

The features that you’ll find onboard include six airbags, anti-lock brakes as well as stability and traction control. Unfortunately, due to the car’s relatively low price, you won’t find modern features like a blind-spot monitor or a lane-departure system, but since they’re not all that crucial, it’s not a bad thing.
