The 2014 Scion tC suffers from a lack of distinction, offering decent quality in every aspect, but not quite matching its superior cousin, the Scion FR-S. That said, this coupe truly shines in the area of safety standards, having received top scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and offering plenty of safety features. As such, safety-conscious individuals should be the only ones to consider this model over the FR-S.

The 2014 Scion tC is no longer the manufacturer’s top performer, but it’s still a decent enough coupe to compete with other vehicles in its class, like the Mazda3 and Ford Focus. The problem here is that Scion’s new FR-S model is a better car in just about every aspect, meaning that the tC no longer has the kind of purposefulness it used to have. That said, it comes with improved body design, a solid cabin and excellent safety features, which make it loveable enough to be worth at least one look

The new Scion tC comes with a few visual changes that place it a notch above its predecessors. The most noticeable change can be found at the front where the car’s wide grille and LED-accented headlights complement a long hood. The body also features 18-inch wheels that come with a gray finish and contrasting machined-spoke surfaces. The limited edition Scion 10 Series comes with Silver Ignition paint, silver seat belts and a solar-powered shift knob.

Step inside and you’ll find higher-quality upholstery and better-designed trim on the dash, which benefits from contrasting materials. The biggest problem with the cabin is the one that’s been plaguing the 2014 tC for a while now – lack of colour. Everything is either black or gray, which makes the interior seem drab and just plain depressing. The dials and instrument clusters are actually are all fittingly round and minimalistic without actually missing any details. The space in the cabin is also a blessing – since there’s plenty at the front and back. The front seats are especially comfortable thanks to their high adjustability. As for the trunk, it’s not the biggest, but once you lower the back seats, you can make trips to actual supermarkets, not just convenience stores.

Under the hood, the new Scion tC comes with just one engine – the 2.5-litre four-cylinder. This one can produce 179 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. It can be combined with either an automatic or manual transmission, both of which are six-speed units. The manual transmission’s clutch is at times a little too “soft,” but thanks to its ultra-precise shifter, this shouldn’t bother too many drivers. The automatic one, on the other hand, features rev-matching tech that allows it to have smoother downshifts and gear changes that are twice as fast as those in the 2013 model. The only problem with this engine is that the FR-S’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder offers 200 horsepower for a relatively similar price, which makes the tC somewhat obsolete.

The tC truly shines when it comes to its safety features, offering eight airbags, Brake Assist and several other impressive features. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named it is Top Safety Pick, while the National Highway Traffic safety Administration has given five stars overall.

Overall, the 2014 Scion tC is not a bad car, but it can’t compete even within its own brand. There’s just nothing special about this coupe. So, if anything, give it a try, but keep the superior FR-S version in mind.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Scion tC gets a few tweaks that should bring meaningful performance improvements and a somewhat stronger attitude; but the reality is that they're not going to punt the tC into the realm of other affordable performance coupes like the Ford Mustang, Mazda Miata, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, or even Scion's FR-S sports car. Instead, think of the tC as first and foremost an everyday-comfortable sporty coupe--with stronger chops than you might think.

There's nothing significantly new under the hood for 2014, but the tC remains a solid performer. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, making 179 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque, is paired with a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic, and can get to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds with the manual or 8.3 seconds with the automatic—this year adding downshift rev-blipping.

Although we haven't driven the 2014 version with the revised automatic, we've found previous auto versions to nicely straddle the line between economy and performance, with smooth downshifts and respectable performance. Tuner-intending owners will opt for the nicely weighted manual--although we're always surprised by its crazy-light clutch uptake. Scion's skipping any kind of shift paddles for now, which we hate, but at this price point it's not much of a surprise.

The electric power steering feels good, as do the big all-disc brakes, and ride quality's obviously a priority, as the big 18-inch wheels and tires don't make things too harsh. For 2014, Scion does claim to have increased body rigidity and made “modifications to stabilizer bar hardware.” It's also retuned the suspension and added additional welds for improved dynamics. Look for an update here on how those updates work.

Interiors and Special Features:

For 2014, the Scion tC receives a modest interior upgrade with better seat materials and more contrasting trim on the dash. Color, however, is still absent from the overly black and gray interior palate. The tC's driver's seat is adjustable enough for all shapes and sizes, and rear-seat passengers will be surprised by the amount of room they actually have. Dials and instrument clusters have a round theme that is pleasant and manages to be Spartan without looking like anything is missing. A 60/40-split folding back seat allows trips to actual supermarkets, not just convenience stores.

Safety features:

The 2014 Scion tC comes with standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and eight airbags (front, front-side, front-knee, full-length side curtain).

In government crash testing, the tC scored a perfect five stars overall, including four stars for front impacts and five for side impacts. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the xB its top rating of Good in all crash-test categories except the new small front overlap test, where the tC was deemed Acceptable (the second-best rating of four).
