Power and Performance:

The 2014 Scion xB is pitched toward younger, urban dwellers; yet it doesn't have the perky, responsive feel you might expect from such a vehicle. Instead it's a more mature, merely adequate (and unexciting) driving experience.

The 158-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that powers the xB has been used in a number of other Toyota vehicles, including the Camry. It's plenty for the Camry yet it somehow manages to feel a little sluggish in the xB.

A five-speed manual gearbox is the base setup, and we prefer it for the nicely weighted shift lever and progressive clutch uptake. The four-speed automatic has big gaps between gear ratios, which makes highway driving more noisy and less satisfying.

As for how the xB rides and handles (and this can vary widely depending on which dealer-installed accessories you've chosen, by the way), we tend to think of the xB as having two different personalities, depending on the speed. At city speeds, the xB's rather short wheelbase and responsive electric power steering are assets, and it feels quite confident. Yet with the standard calibration for this front strut, rear torsion-beam suspension tuned quite soft, the xB can feel clumsier in faster maneuvers. Add in the strong disc brakes, and you have a vehicle that is missing excitement but is safe and confident.

Whether you get it with the manual gearbox or the four-speed automatic, the 2014 Scion xB comes with EPA mileage numbers of 10.7 L/100km city, 8.4 L/100km highway.

It's disappointing, as you'll do better than that overall in a number of mid-size sedans, like the Toyota Camry, and better on the highway even on some much larger V-6 sedans, like the Avalon. Toyota's hybrid models are gas-mileage leaders, but the Scion xB, with a non-hybrid four-cylinder powertrain, doesn't follow that; it lags toward the back of the pack, as well as behind the Kia Soul.

We've noted that when the xB is driven above 70 mph, its real-world mileage drops drastically; while this might be a reasonably fuel-efficient model around town, if you do a lot of commuting on the highway, the boxy, brick-like shape should be a cause to look elsewhere.

Interiors and Special Features:

Despite the 2014 xB's tidy exterior dimensions, there's no lacking for interior space. If you or your friends are tall, all parties should feel at ease in the xB. When not holding your buddies, the Scion's 3-person rear seat folds in a 60/40 split to open up nearly 70 cubic feet of cargo space. Up front, controls are simple to see and use: If you want to adjust the fan, you can do it in about two seconds. With lots of hard plastic and flat, simple surfaces, you won't confuse the xB for a Lexus. One interesting visual is the gauge cluster mounted at the top center of the dash.

The 2014 Scion xB comes in just one major trim level and with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. Thankfully this car is pretty well equipped for the price. All xB models come with remote keyless entry, cruise control and power windows. The standard audio system has six speakers and a Display Audio AM/FM/CD/HD system with streaming Bluetooth and aux/USB ports with iPod connectivity. On the safety front, the xB has traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist and a bounty of airbags. Also included with new xB models is complimentary maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles and two years of roadside assistance.

Most options for the xB have to do with personalizing the car or bettering its performance with parts from Toyota's racing division, TRD. Among them are a sport muffler, lowering springs, a high-performance brake kit and a limited-slip differential that works with the 5-speed manual transmission. Wheel options include 17-inch alloys or, for those who really want to roll big, 19-inch versions. The optional BeSpoke Premium Audio system pairs with iPhones to harness app-based features including navigation and Internet radio. Twin screens mounted in the front headrests, meanwhile, can bring entertainment to rear-seat passengers.

Safety features:

The 2014 Scion xB comes standard with antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags.

In Edmunds brake testing, the xB came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet -- an average distance for a small wagon or hatchback.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the xB its highest rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. The xB's seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
