Quick Look

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover is a luxury SUV that has the enormous advantage of doing absolutely everything right. Its fuel economy may be subpar and its price a little too high, but when a car comes with a ginormous cabin such as this one and a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine that can pump out 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque, who can complain? We certainly won’t.

Full Review

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover stay true to the shape and attitude that have made it successful in the first place, but it also manages to throw more than a few modern touches into the mix. The result is a luxury SUV that delivers excellency in every single aspect, including performance, cabin comfort and design. There are, however, two problems with this vehicle, one of which is not even a problem, but more of an inconvenience. The first one is absolutely abysmal fuel economy and the other one is the car’s ridiculous price tag of $119,990. We’ll let you decide which one is more inconvenient than the other.

The 2014 Range Rover is first model from the fourth generation, which means that it’s lighter than its predecessors, while being slightly bigger. With length of 196.8 inches, it’s in fact shorter than a full-size sedan, but it’s still highly maneuverable. The overall design is sleeker with contemporary flair gracing the SUV’s headlight and taillight housings, but it does retain the blocky shape that’s been part of its rugged looks since the 1970s. Those boxy aesthetics also allow for decent cargo space and excellent interior visibility. The Range Rover’s unibody structure is made from aluminum, which is how it’s managed to drop 700 pounds from the previous generation. Overall, Land Rover has done a fantastic job of retaining old-school sensibilities, while also moving forward.

The 2014 Range Rover may look intimidating and tank-like, but its cabin is soft and luxurious. It has two seating rows, which can hold five passengers, along with plenty of cargo space in the back. The legroom in the back is much better than it used to be in its predecessors, while the front seats provide bolstering, lots of support and an excellent view out. Leather seating is available as a standard, but those of you who want something more upscale and comfortable, can get Oxford leather along with soft headrests that will make you feel like royalty. Then there the Range Rover Autobiography models, which take luxury to unimaginable levels. Those vehicles provide you with semi-aniline leather and an available Executive Class Seating, which replaces the three-passenger bench with a pair of perfectly-shaped seats that can recline and massage your back.

The new Range Rover also offers plenty of features, though they vary with trim level. With the Vision Assist package you get a surround camera system, blind-spot monitoring and the Terrain Response 2 system. You can also for the more upscale Meridian sound systems, including one that has 29 speakers! Not impressed yet? Other options include adaptive cruise control, parallel-park assist and an active rear locking differential. All-an-all, the Range Rover’s cabin considered to be one of the most luxurious offerings on the market – and we can definitely see why.

Under the hood, you might find a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine, which is here instead of the naturally aspirated V8 in the predecessors. This new engine can produce 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The Supercharged and Autobiography trims still come with the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine, which can pump out 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. All the models come with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, while offering a start/stop function to improve fuel economy, which, as was already mentioned, is absolutely terrible.

So, is the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover worth its high price? If you’re looking for absolute luxury, then yes, it is indeed. However, if you’re looking for something more practical, then you might want to spend a little less money on a car that’s a little less luxurious. That said, this SUV is an absolute treat – if you can afford it.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover epitomizes the broad range of capability implied by the two sets of rather repetitive names it bears: it's as capable on-road as off, and the improvements brought to the all-new generation last year just enhance both sides of its ability.

The all-aluminum body of the Range Rover gives it a weight loss of 700 pounds over the previous generation, using riveted and bonded construction for aircraft-quality rigidity and strength. The suspension is also made of both cast and forged aluminum elements, and some of the body panels have been sandwiched with composite liners to further save weight.

Interiors and Special Features:

Though tough on the outside, the 2014 Range Rover's interior is soft and luxurious. Two rows of seats hold five passengers, with plenty of cargo room in back. Rear legroom is much better than past models, and the front seats offer a commanding view. Leather seating is standard, with plusher Oxford leather available. Even the cloud-like headrests will make you feel like royalty. Range Rover Autobiography editions take lux to the extreme with semi-aniline leather and an available Executive Class Seating which replaces the 3-passenger bench with a pair of deeply sculpted seats that both recline and massage.

Safety features:

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover comes equipped with antilock brakes, traction and stability control (with rollover control and hill descent control), front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, front-seat active head restraints and a driver-side knee airbag. Front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are also standard.

All models also feature Emergency Braking Assist, which uses forward-sensing radar and primes the brake system if a collision seems imminent. Optional on base models is adaptive cruise control with Intelligent Emergency Braking. It uses the radar to detect a possible collision situation and initiates braking to help avoid it. If the driver doesn't respond and a collision is deemed unavoidable, the system can engage full-force braking. The optional Vision Assist package adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts and a surround-view camera system. Models with the Autobiography or Autobiography Black package include all of the above safety equipment as standard.
