Full Review

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque aims to please a very specific group of people – those who enjoy “adventuring” in style. Unlike other coupe-style crossovers, like the BMW X6 and Infiniti QX70, the Evoque offers style without being overbearing and trendy without being strange. It’s not like anything currently on the road.

The external design is the Range Rover’s greatest asset. It retains many of the same details as the previous models, like its sloping roof and clamshell-like hood. However, Land Rover has changed the front to give it a slightly sportier appearance, stylizing the hood vents and narrowing all the windows. It looks appropriately athletic and modern now, which may deter the more practical car buyers, but should attract those who are looking for style.

On the inside, things aren’t quite as flashy since Land Rover has gone for clarity and simplicity instead. In spite of that, the quality of materials is superb, while all the details like buttons and switches are sharply designed. You get five seats in total, with the front ones being very spacious and supportive. The back seats a little too snug and tough to access, especially in the three-door model. As for cargo space – it’s not particularly impressive, but there’s still plenty of room. The car’s design does hinder the space a bit since its roof is lower at the back, which means you won’t be able to fit in taller objects.

What might disappoint you a bit about the 2014 Evoque is the fact that it comes with only one engine. We’re talking about a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder here, which is based on the engine from the Ford Explorer EcoBoost. It achieves a very impressive level of smoothness and barely any throttle lag, while producing quite a bit of power. This hunk of metal provides 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, while being combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which comes with steering-wheel paddle shifters for manual control.

In general, the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque will appeal to a very specific group of individuals. It offers a great engine, fantastic design and numerous practical features. So, if you dig the looks of this fine crossover, then definitely give it a try.

Power and Performance:

The Range Rover Evoque's Land Rover genes might not be bone-deep--it's not the go-anywhere luxury-upholstered mountain goat--but it's  still impressive and capable off-road considering its decidedly urban upbringing. More catlike than the rest of the range, the Evoque spans a gap most other crossovers can't manage.

Lower in height and power, lighter in weight, and smaller in footprint than the rest of the Land Rover and Range Rover line, the Evoque bridges the gap between car-like ride and handling and SUV-like feel and function.

Under the hood lies a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The transmission is a notable upgrade from the previous six-speed automatic, doing much to smooth out some of the coarseness in the turbo engine's nature and improve gas mileage in the process. While never overwhelmingly powerful like the 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 in the full-sized Range Rover, the Evoque's turbo four is peppy and punchy as soon as the turbo is spooled up.

Words like "car-like" tend to get used too often when talking about well-mannered crossovers, but in the Evoque's case, it's truly apt. Electric power steering makes for light and crisp maneuvers; independent suspension brings nimbleness and balance. With the Dynamic trim package, magnetic dampers offer even more ride quality and body control. Drive the new Evoque and you'll realize it's not just a new kind of Land Rover, but an entirely new kind of crossover.

Other new features for the 2014 model year include a new four-wheel drive system that disengages at speeds above 22 mph, reducing the load on the drivetrain for improved gas mileage. Should four-wheel-drive grip become needed, however, it can re-engage in just 300 milliseconds. A new torque-vectoring system is also fitted as standard, helping to reduce understeer in hard maneuvers.

But what happens when the pavement runs out? Does the Evoque truly deserve its Land Rover, let alone its Range Rover, appellations? It does, though perhaps not to the same degree. A reinforced, high-strength steel body wraps around the capable turbo four-cylinder powertrain and Land Rover's four-mode Terrain Response system, with Haldex all-wheel-drive providing grip in Normal, Snow, Mud & Ruts, and Sand modes--all selected by a press of a button.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque's emphasis on design extends to its interior, where rich, multi-hued combinations of leather, plastics, wood and metal result in a cabin that has more flair than the more conventional layouts in other small luxury crossovers.

Visual interest centers on the "floating" center stack and the nifty rotary gear selector. The standard 8-inch central touchscreen controls most infotainment and climate control functions and is easy enough to use, if sometimes slow to respond. The overall appearance of the dash, particularly the center stack and console, is classy but high-tech.

The Evoque's sloping roof line is a stylist's dream but does backseat occupants' heads no favors, and the upward-sloping door sheet metal results in small rear windows, contributing to a claustrophobic feel in the rear. The sensation is heightened in the Coupe, which is also more challenging to get in and out of, naturally. The Evoque's styling and packaging also affects cargo capacity. Its maximum volume of 51 cubic feet (47.6 for the Coupe) with the rear seats folded trails most competitors by a wide margin.
