Quick Look

The 2014 Land Rover LR4 is one of the more practical SUVs on the market, offering high performance and functional design. The 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine you get with this car is actually more efficient than the one that came before it, while also offering 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The fuel efficiency is still awful, but at least it’s better.

Full Review

The 2014 Land Rover LR4 is essentially the “medium” version of Land Rover, with the LR2 to being the “small” version and Range Rover being the “large” one. It comes with an appropriate price tag of $59,990 to accommodate this size. Land Rover has given the LR4 quite an overhaul for this year too, which includes adding a new engine, updated exterior design and several other noteworthy additions. The question is – are these additions worth your money? Well, we are about to find out.

On the outside, you’ll find that this SUV looks as boxy as they come. While other vehicles in its class aim for a sleeker look, this one dares to look like a rectangle. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it projects functionality as opposed to style. To be fair, however, Land Rover has actually made it curvier – if that’s even an accurate word in this context – with new wraparound headlights and less protruding front bumper. There’s also a set of new wheels and paint colours for those who felt that the previous model was a bit lacking in those departments, which we think it wasn’t.

As for the cabin, it’s even more upscale than last year, if that’s even possible. Thanks to the new Windsor Leather Package, which is standard on the LR4 HSE LUX trim, you get tons of quality materials and user-friendly button, knobs and dials, all of which have clear labels and natural placement. They are also stylish to boot, which helps things along nicely. One more thing that you shouldn’t dismiss is the option of adding a third seating row, which allows you to fit in seven passengers instead of five. However, that bench isn’t exactly spacious, so it’s best reserved for children. The other two seating rows on the other hand are very spacious as is the cargo area, which yields 40 cubic feet of space, if the third row is gone.

On the powertrain side of things, things aren’t so hot though – at least if you’re craving options. However, the one option that’s available is actually not bad at all. What you get under the hood is a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine, which can produce 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, while being combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The off-road-ready transfer case is now an optional feature. A new feature is a start/stop function, which turns off the engine at an extended spotlight. As a result, the fuel economy is now better, but not by much, which basically means that it’s still terrible.

So, the 2014 Land Rover LR4 worth its hefty price tag? It sure is! However, if you’re turned off by its exterior appearance or you don’t enjoy off-roading, then this SUV may not be for you. Otherwise, give it a look!

Power and Performance:

Power for the 2014 Land Rover LR4 comes from a new 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 340 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Also standard is an auto stop-start function that shuts down the engine when you're stopped in traffic to save fuel. The EPA estimates fuel economy at 16 mpg combined (14 city/19 highway) -- not great numbers, but a definite improvement over last year's V8-powered LR4. Properly equipped, the LR4 can tow a healthy 7,700 pounds.

Full-time four-wheel drive is standard, but this year's revamped system features a simpler single-speed transfer case that's more efficient in everyday driving. If you plan to drive off-road, the traditional two-speed transfer case, which offers low-range gearing and a locking rear differential, is still available as part of the Heavy Duty option package.

With either setup, you get Land Rover's innovative Terrain Response system, which has a center-console-mounted knob that allows the driver to select from four standard settings (general, grass/gravel/snow, sand, and mud/ruts). Models equipped with the two-speed transfer case also get a fifth "rock crawl" setting. Each of these modes alters engine, transmission and suspension calibrations to allow the LR4 to tackle a wide variety of terrain. The LR4's electronically controlled air suspension also helps in this regard, with settings ranging from a lowered height that enables easy entry and exit to a fully raised position that maximizes ground clearance on particularly gnarly stretches of trail.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Land Rover LR4's cabin was already upscale and modern, but this year, it adds a Windsor Leather Package as standard equipment on the LR4 HSE LUX trim. Quality materials abound, and the intuitive and clearly labeled buttons and dials have a visual and tactile heft. An optional third row extends seating from five up to seven, but that optional rearmost seat is best left to kids. Otherwise it's roomy: There's good 2nd-row legroom, with more than 40 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row.

Safety features:

Standard safety features on the 2014 Land Rover LR4 include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control (with rollover mitigation technology and trailer stability assist), hill-descent control, hill start assist, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Passive safety measures include front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags that extend to cover the third-row seat on models so equipped. A blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert system and a 360-degree parking camera are optional.
