Quick Look

The 2014 Chevrolet Suburban drops its heavy-duty V8-powered 2500 model, leaving only the well-equipped 1500 model. The original SUV is starting to feel a bit outdated, but the sheer size and powerful capabilities are as evident as ever.

Full Review

The 2014 Chevrolet Suburban has dropped its heavy-duty 2500 model for this year and made the convenience package standard for all its trims. The Suburban arrived 80 years ago as the first ever Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and is in its 11th generation today. This will be the last year for this model run as Chevrolet is introducing a redesign for 2015. The full-size SUV is the perfect vehicle to haul around a lot of people and, more importantly, stuff. Available in three trim levels: the LS, LT and LTZ; the Suburban will seat up to nine passengers. This vehicle is muscular, roomy, versatile and will please buyers who believe that bigger really is better.

The Chevrolet Suburban has a large boxy frame that solidifies its aggressive look on the road. The front of the SUV has a twin-part horizontal grille that sandwiches the Chevrolet bowtie and functional fog lights placed underneath the automatic headlights. There are three prominent windows on both sides of the vehicle and large wheel arches to accommodate the potential 22-inch alloy wheels. The rear privacy glass that comes standard on all trims is a great feature for both aesthetics and function. Notable options include a sunroof, power-extending running boards and a heavy-duty towing package.  The Suburban has a sleek look that, if properly-equipped, may get the owner confused for a celebrity.

The cabin of the Suburban is huge as it’s capable of fitting up to nine passengers, depending on the trim level and configuration, but it most comfortable when equipped for seven. The hard surfaces, covering most of the interior, give this SUV a dated look, but it still has high-quality materials and refinement. The technology specs are relative to the trim line as the LS is rather basic, while the top-of-the-line LTZ sports a navigation package and 7-inch touchscreen display. Notable options include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with one or two overhead screens that is perfect for long road trips. The standard convenience package includes: rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, remote ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and power adjustable pedals; this addition increases the amenities on the Suburban and will help push it through the last year of this model’s run.

Notable selling features on this car are abundant. The Suburban is the original SUV and its years of fine-tuning are evident. The sheer size of this vehicle is what will be the selling point for most buyers. The LS is available to seat nine passengers with three rows of benches. The LT can hold up to eight passengers with front captain’s chairs and two rows of bucket seats, while the LTZ carries seven with the first two rows captain’s chairs and a third-row bench configuration. Not only will this car haul around all the people in your life, but it will also take their stuff. The cargo space is very ample with the third row in use and becomes even more so with the bench is removed. Another cool feature about this SUV is the Active Fuel Management (AFM). It is no secret that a vehicle of this size, equipped with a V8 engine, will  require time and money at the pump, but the AFM system deactivates four of the eight cylinders if the load is light enough, conserving fuel and reducing emissions.

Under the hood of the Suburban is a 5.3-liter V8 engine that produces 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. This vehicle comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. There are also two different four-wheel-drive systems available. When properly equipped, the Suburban can tow up to 8,100 pounds.

In spite all that, the 2014 Chevrolet Suburban is starting to show its age in this last model year, but that does not detract from what this car was built to do. It has SUV capabilities and power, with comfort, style and refinement making it a great choice for those who need space and lots of it.

Power and Performance:

335 pound-feet of torque. It comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while there are two different four-wheel-drive systems available. One of the 4WD systems has a traditional two-range transfer case (LTZ), and the other is a lighter-duty single-speed unit without low-speed gearing. If you just need a little extra traction on slick winter roads, the single-speed 4WD system will likely serve you just fine.

Interiors and Special Features:

While the Chevy Suburban's interior is starting to show its age, it's still attractive enough and has a quality feel to it. The gauges and controls lack many of the latest gee-whiz features, but they're easy to read and intuitive to operate. The overly large, column-mounted gearshift seems a little dated, as does the absence of a telescoping steering wheel (although the standard power-adjustable pedals partially compensate). Smartphone users will also notice there's no ability to stream music, as the Suburban's Bluetooth connection allows only phone calls.

When it comes to hauling people, though, the Suburba
