Choosing a heavy-duty pickup truck is not easy in the day and age since there are so many good ones – but the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD certainly delivers. With a set of powerful engines, spacious interior and a selection of ginormous beds, this truck can definitely stand up to the likes of Ram and Ford in this particular segment. It also splits evenly between the 1500 and 3500 models, offering the best of both worlds.



Full Review

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is a nice combination of the 1500’s sense of lightness and the 3500HD’s heavier workhorse elements. It’s a tough market to stand out since most heavy-duty pickup trucks from the likes of Ford and Ram offer quality yet they do nothing to differentiate themselves. In other words, your choice will largely depend on your brand preference and several minor feature differences.

On the outside, the 2014 Silverado 2500HD offers a boxy shape along with a huge chrome grille and an elevated, aggressive hood. Just remember – this truck is big. Really big. Even if you get a standard cab, you should expect it to be 225 inches long, which makes it two feet lengthier than the full-size version of the Chevrolet Impala. Then you have the crew-cab variants, which offer 259.1 inches of length.

On the inside, the new 2500HD can wear many different hats, which means that its quality will greatly depend on your own preferences as well as the size of your wallet. So, what can you get here? Let’s dig into that, shall we? The base WT models with standard cab seats has very little to offer for instance. All you get is bare minimum of what’s necessary to get the work done. If you move up to the extended-cab model, you’ll get to fit more passengers thanks to a back bench – six instead of three. You can fit six people in the crew cab variant as well, but if you get individual seats, you can only fit five. The LZT trim crew cab models also get to enjoy leather-lined seats. The highest-trim model of the Silverado comes equipped with several outlets and even the option of being used as a Wi-Fi hotspot. So, if you want more than just a truck, then you better invest some money in the more expensive version of the 2500HD.

On the powertrain side of things, you get to choose one out of two possible options, both of which are V8 engines. The 6.0-litre version can produce 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.6-litre turbocharged diesel option will yield 397 horsepower and 795 pound-feet of torque. The latter can also run on B20 biodiesel fuel, if you feel so inclined, and comes with an exhaust braking feature that slows the truck down when travelling downhill. The diesel engine is our preferred choice because it offers more power and asks for less fuel. Both engines are combined with a six-speed automatic transmission, with the diesel option getting the Allison 1000 transmission.

Overall, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is as good a truck as any. Like the rest of them, it offers plenty of options and two very powerful engines. What makes it better than the other trucks? For the most part, that would be its fuel economy. Outside of that, this pickup does not stand out in any way.

The standard power plant for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is a 6.0-liter V8 backed by a six-speed automatic. This engine is rated at 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can add a bi-fuel option, allowing the truck to run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). When operating with CNG, power output drops to 301 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque.

An optional turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V8 is the favored engine choice for those who plan on towing or hauling on a regular basis. It produces 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a beefier six-speed automatic transmission. In Edmunds performance testing of a mechanically identical GMC Sierra 2500HD with this engine, we recorded a 0-60 time of just 7 seconds, which is quick for a heavy-duty pickup.

Rear-wheel drive is standard for all models, with four-wheel drive optional.

Properly equipped, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD can haul up to 3,670 pounds of payload (4,212 pounds when equipped with a special high-payload Performance package). It can tow up to 13,000 pounds with its standard ball hitch and 17,800 pounds with a fifth-wheel connection.

Interiors and Special Features:

The 2014 Chevy Silverado HD's interior varies widely depending on what trim and cab configuration you choose. A base WT model with regular cab seats three on a vinyl bench and has few frills, not even power windows. It's made to be exactly what its initials stand for: Work Truck. Extended-cab models, meanwhile, expand passenger count to six with a rear bench. Crew cabs are also configured to seat six or, with individual front seats, five. Crew bosses will appreciate the premium, leather-lined accommodations of LTZ models. When properly equipped, the Silverado HD serves as a rolling office, thanks to multiple power outlets and the option of it becoming a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

Safety features:

Safety equipment that’s standard across the 2014 Silverado 2500HD lineup includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), as well as traction and stability control. Mandated front airbags are of course standard, but front side-mounted airbags and front (and rear) head airbags are optional for each trim level. Daytime running lights, meantime, remain standard for all trim levels, with LT and LTZ levels flaunting standard OnStar emergency assistance services, a post-collision safety system and a remote antitheft alarm. Again, the LTZ also adds in standard front fog/driving lights and turn-signal-integrated mirrors.
