Its 3.6-litre V-6 engine is particularly impressive thanks to its efficiency and raw power. Those in the market for a decent family car will find much to like about this crossover SUV.
The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox offers comfort, practicality and affordability thanks to its spacious cabin, fantastic safety equipment and a strong engine. This small crossover SUV does not truly excel in any particular area, but it does deliver quality where it matters. So, if you’re in the market for a sizeable family car, and if excellence isn’t your main concern, then you should definitely take the new Equinox into consideration.
Admittedly, the crossover has lost some of its charm since its introduction back in 2008, but at least it has a very decent exterior design. The car benefits primarily from its somewhat sporty styling and visual cues borrowed from Chevy’s SUVs and sedans. The major attraction here is that everything about this car is unabashedly big – from its hefty headlights and taillights to its sizeable grille. In fact, it’s very similar to Chevy Traverse – though it lacks some of that car’s more elegant design features.
On the inside, the Equinox could benefit from a few upgrades since it’s not quite on the same level as the rest of the Chevy lineup, but it’s still very acceptable. The biggest detriment to the interior space is its outdated tech, such as the small screen at the centre of the instrument panel that looks as if it came straight from the ‘90s thanks to its outdated graphics. The seven-inch touchscreen, which you will find on the dashboard, is a little better since it allows the use of several modern features such as hands-free phone calls and audio streaming. However, it’s not in any shape or form revolutionary, so don’t expect too much.
The saving grace of this cabin is the fact that it’s spacious and comfortable enough to accommodate both adults and kids, which is great for a family car. And since this is a “mini” crossover, it comes with just five seats, but they are large enough to fit just about anyone. Cargo area could use a little more room, but you can still stuff it with plenty of items. Just don’t think of transporting anything too big.
When it comes to engines – the Chevy Equinox has two of them, and both of them are good in their own way. The 2.4-litre four-cylinder is the base engine, and it can produce 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. It accelerates to the 100-kilometre mark in about nine seconds, which is very impressive. But if you’re looking for more power, then there’s no better option than the 3.6-litre V-6. It can easily pump out 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque, but it does so at a cost of fuel. And since the V-6 is not terribly economical, the choice between the two engines may be more clean-cut than you think. It basically comes down to whether you prefer power or efficiency.
One other area where the Equinox succeeds is in its safety equipment, which is quite remarkable. Since the day of its debut, this crossover has consistently delivered top results in crash-tests and safety ratings, making it one of the safest vehicles in its class, and this year’s model is no different. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named it its Top Safety Pick, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given it five- and four-star ratings in all the tests.
In terms of safety features, all models of the Equinox offer four-wheel disc brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, head-curtain side airbags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted bags. You will also find a rearview camera system and lane departure warning and forward collision warning systems, which are available only in the LTZ and LT models.
Overall, there’s nothing truly hateable about the new Chevy Equinox. It’s a jack of all trades and a master of none. So, if you’re looking for a decent family crossover that delivers quality in all areas for an affordable price, then definitely give this car a looksee.
The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is a five-seat crossover SUV that looks decent enough to please the eye – but it won’t win any beauty contests. In spite of that, you’ll find much to like about its exterior design. First and foremost, everything about it is large – from its huge headlights and taillights to its weighty grille. Secondly, it looks completely non-threatening, combining design elements of Chevy’s SUVs and sedans to deliver something that would perfectly suit a nuclear family.
If you’re familiar with the look of the Chevrolet Traverse, then you’ll notice just how similar the two of them are. The Equinox just happens to look like a more down-to-earth version of that car. The features that help it stand out from the crowd are the slick details above its rounded tail and the unique layout of its headlights and grille. Otherwise, it’s basically a clone of every crossover you’ve ever seen. It may be a good-looking clone, but it is a clone all the same.

| Power and Performance: | The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox comes with a set of two engines – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 3.6-litre V-6. The four-cylinder is capable of producing 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, while the V-6 can generate 301 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the car offers a choice of either a front-wheel or an all-wheel drive. In terms of fuel economy, your choice will largely depend on how much power you want your engine to generate. The V-6 is clearly the more powerful engine here, but its fuel economy rating is at 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. These ratings are definitely on the higher side, so if fuel economy is your main concern, then you should probably consider getting the four-cylinder. This one carries the EPA rating of 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway, which is very decent, but not exactly earthshattering. What you get here is a clear choice between power and fuel efficiency, the outcome of which would depend squarely on your preferences. |
| Interiors and Special Features: | The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox offers a very standard cabin – so standard in fact that it’s just a notch above mediocrity. Its greatest fault lies in its outdated tech gadgetry, especially when it comes to the screen at the centre of the instrument panel. Sitting right between two gauges, this screen involves 1990s-style graphics that look colourless and uninspired by today’s standards – which is not a good thing at all. On the other hand, the centre stack looks surprisingly good, thanks to a set of vents that neatly frame the controls. Higher trims also get a seven-inch touchscreen and IPod/USB audio interface, both of which are very easy to use. In fact, there’s a whole range of special features to choose from. The base LS model comes with standard air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, sliding and reclining rear seats, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth, OnStar and a six-speaker system with a CD player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. The LT trim offers premium cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a touchscreen-equipped sound system. There’s also an LT trim that provides heated front seats, en eight-speaker Pioneer sound system, an eight-way power driver seat and automatic climate control. Finally, there’s the LTZ model, which comes with leather upholstery and a whole set of safety features like rear parking sensors, lane departure warning system and more. The Equinox truly shines when it comes to spacing, offering plenty of room in the front, back and trunk. In fact, it’s more spacious than the majority of compacts, while not being as ridiculously large as the Chevy Traverse. The trunk could use just a smidge more space – but only if you’re planning to stuff it with numerous oversized objects and the like. |
