Quick Look

The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle is both classic and straightforward, featuring the same style and comfort that it always has – except now with more of a modern flow. This year’s model benefits from a fuel-efficient engine lineup that includes a turbocharged 1.8-litre inline-four and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel inline-four, both with standard manual transmission and front-wheel drive. On the outside is the same recognizable design in the form of pronounced curves and smooth sheet metal, ultimately conveying a sense of elegance and comfort that is evidenced throughout the cars interior as well. There is no doubt that the new Beetle aims to please with fuel economy, comfortable interior and the timelessly attractive outer body.

Full Review

The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle is attractive and comfortable in all the right ways, straying only slightly from its classic design. The only changes being – its lowered roofline and increased interior space. Courageously competing with rivals like the Nissan Juke and MINI Cooper, it shines in terms of functionality and fuel economy on top of its timeless vibe. With ample room, storage space and two great engines, this Beetle remains reliable and capable, undeniably standing out on the road.

On the outside of this classic Volkswagen Beetle is an overall style that attempts to make the vehicle more gender neutral and attract male consumers. Nonetheless, the vehicle incorporates the same straightforward and timeless design, featuring attractive and flowing lines with flattened arches and subtle flares. It looks the same as its simplistic predecessors, but now with a lower and flatter roofline that makes room for a more upright windshield. Overall, the Beetle is (expectedly) unchanged on the outside and boasts the same timeless design.

This year's update brings the same classy passenger environment for the Beetle, utilizing a simple and useful interior for a laid back experience. The front cabin is roomy and features good headroom and legroom. The seats are likewise comfortable, making it easy to take this car on long drives. The backseat, on the other hand, isn’t as spacious and significantly lacks legroom. In fact, legroom is pretty much non-existent. But the vehicle does host a multitude of boxes and bins for storage and up to 15.4 cubic feet of storage space, which is increased to 30 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Tech enthusiasts will be satisfied with the available features in this Volkswagen, but the five-inch colour touchscreen does look a bit small compared to other electronic interfaces on the market. The system bundles stereo and navigation and further comes with a three-month subscription to SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Also available is a leather steering wheel, panoramic sunroof and a premium Fender audio system that produces impressive sound quality.

Under the hood of this year’s Volkswagen Beetle is a choice between gas or diesel drivetrains. The base unit comprises a 1.8-litre turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Running on front-wheel drive and standard five-speed manual transmission, this unit is rated at 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres highway. The alternate 2.0-litre turbodiesel inline-four, however, produces 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Though less powerful, this drivetrain offer a stellar 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Both engines are offered with optional automatic transmission.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes and traction and stability control, as well as Volkswagen’s Car-Net telematics system. The system effectively bundles crash notifications, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle locator, remote door unlocking and geo-fencing – which allows parents to set boundaries for young drivers.

Throughout this car is an overall simple and straightforward feel, carrying over many aesthetic features from its predecessors. This vehicle has barely changed since its inception, making it one of the most recognizable cars in the world.
