Quick Look

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan is the German automaker’s compact SUV and a rival to the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape. In spite of being less popular than its competitors, the Tiguan is a solid vehicle, offering a snappy engine and great handling. It’s not without its flaws, however, falling behind when it comes to fuel economy, size and latest safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring and emergency braking.

Full Review

The Volkswagen Tiguan is definitely one of the more underappreciated compact SUVs on the market, and the 2016 version is unlikely to buck the trend. Despite the lack of appreciation, the Tiguan is a great vehicle, particularly when it comes to handling and its engine. It does fall in a few key areas, however, such as size and safety technology, though we would argue that none of these issues are big enough to dissuade you from purchasing the vehicle.

We already mentioned size as one of the chief issues that make the 2016 Tiguan less than stellar, but would like to solidify this point. The Tiguan is about 442 cm in length, which effectively makes small even by compact-SUV standards. The Nissan Rogue is roughly 20 cm longer; even the CR-V is a bigger vehicle, surpassing the Tiguan by 10 cm. In terms of design, the Tiguan carries the same straightforwardness as any other Volkswagen vehicle, which means no clutter and a simple horizontal grille. Minimalism has been a huge aspect of Volkwagen’s design philosophy for as long as we could remember, and nothing has changed here – though it does look somewhat pudgy…

The Tiguan’s cabin is just as straightforward as the exterior, with clearly outlined controls and taut fit and finish. Everything looks as it should, and nothing really stands out – aside maybe the hefty nature of the steering wheel’s built-in audio and phone buttons as well as faux leather (which is now standard across all trims). In general, the whole thing looks great – not flashy-great, but great nonetheless. If you want to spice things up you can go with genuine leather, but expect it to cost more. Space is limited even when it comes to the cargo area, but we have already mentioned that.

Under the hood, the 2016 Tiguan has only one engine, but it’s a good one, we promise! The treat here is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission is a six-speed automatic, but it does have manual shift and sport modes. The R-Line model also includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. We also appreciate its 2,200-pound towing capacity. In fact, the only issue with the powertrain – and it could be a big one, depending on your preferences – is its disappointing fuel economy, which lags behind the competition. Driving this car is fun though – its transmission downshifts quickly and smoothly, while the ride is smooth and quite. In other words, it feels right.

Overall, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan deserves a little more love. It’s not the best compact SUV, but it’s far from worst. If you are in the market, give it a look, and if the lack of space is too much to tolerate, then at least you would have the pleasure of driving it!

Power and Performance:

All models of the VW Tiguan are powered by a peppy, 200-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The sole transmission is a 6-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard and AWD is available. The 6-speed automatic has manual shift and sport modes, with the sporty R-Line model including steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The Tiguan's towing capacity is rated at 2,200 pounds. There are two downsides to the Tiguan's drivetrain, though. First, fuel economy lags most of its competitors, and adding insult to injury, premium gasoline is recommended (but not required).

Interiors and Special Features:

Even with the addition of new touchscreen interfaces for 2016, the Volkswagen Tiguan doesn't exactly look like the latest and greatest when you drop yourself into the cabin. It definitely lacks the contemporary looks of competitors, but to be fair it's still attractive and restrained in that classic German way, with materials quality and construction that are first-rate. You also sit pleasingly high and upright in the firm, supportive front seats, which should satisfy those searching for that tall, commanding view of the road ahead.

There is an abundance of headroom all around, but rear occupants will find their legs a little more pinched (especially with taller folks up front) than they would in most rivals. The reclining rear seat is certainly welcome, though, as is its sliding functionality that allows you to bring kids a little closer to the front or free up more cargo space.

Safety features:

In addition to the usual front and side airbags, the Tiguan offers rear side thorax airbags as an option. On models equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive, hill descent control is also included, which helps maintain speed on steep slopes. Hill-hold control and an electronic parking brake are standard on all models. Starting last year, a rearview camera became standard equipment. SE and SEL models also include bi-xenon headlights with adaptive programming, which swivel to illuminate the road through turns.

Because it is an older design the Tiguan lacks any of the newer advanced-safety features, such as parking sensors, blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning, and forward collision alert/mitigation. These features, which might help to avoid an accident, are beginning to become available in other mainstream compact crossovers.
