Full Review

The new 2016 Volkswagen Golf R is starting to get a lot of people looking into it with its stylish looks. They have done a great job by redesigning this model in the past and continued to maintain the buzz about it. Even though the 2016 model doesn’t look too different from its previous year’s model, they have done a great job to reach out to drivers and make minor changes to give it an edge.

Taking a look at how this hatchback looks from the outside, we can Volkswagen is sticking with their usual grille style, a rectangular shape complemented with a bar that goes through but behind the logo that is placed on the middle of the front view. They seem to love the shape of their headlights since they have kept that size for a while now. However, with their classic headlights shape they have decided to change up the look from the inside by using LED lighting which gives it that stylish and sporty look they seem to be going for. Most hatchbacks usually go for a rounder shape with their headlights to represent and complement the round shape the vehicle is, but with the Golf R it seems like the lights are a bit edgy and pointy to be considered round at all. This may be another factor that makes it look different than others. Moving on to the rear view of the hatchback, we can see they have used a very similar style tail lights with edgy sides. They have also designed a spoiler with the overbite of the roof over the cargo door causing the hatchback to look sporty.

As we move inside, we can see the functions on the front are very simple for the most part, nothing too complicated. There also isn’t much going on which makes it look a lot cleaner than other interiors. All there is inside is an infotainment system which is 8-inches and other basic tools around it to control it. With the cleaner look, it gives the overall feel a lot less stuffy as opposed to a much clustered front console. The seats are also very comfortable with a leather trim used and an R to symbolize the Golf R edition to this model.

Under the hood we can see Volkswagen uses a 2.0-litre TSI 4-cylinder engine which will be able to push 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The engine will be pushing the car through all wheel drive rather than just the front two. With this powertrain, the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R will be able to reach 100km/h in just about less than 5 seconds. In terms of fuel efficiency, it will require about 7.8 litres for every 100 kilometres driven, about 10.2 litres driving in the city. With a combination of both driving in the city and on the highway it will require about 8.7 litres for every 100 kilometres driven.

Volkswagen has evidently created a great hatchback overall and is starting to bring back the initial popularity the hatchback used to have. With great looks in a sporty and stylish way, and a pretty powerful engine, this car will undoubtedly do well when it hits stores.

Power and Performance:

Under its hood, the Golf R gets an updated version of the 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that delivers 292 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 280 pound-feet of torque between 1,800 to 5,500 rpm. The engine mates to a six-speed manual transmission as standard, which helps sprint the Golf R to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds — 0.4 seconds faster than the previous Golf R. The Golf R will also have an optional six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission available, which drops the 0-to-60 mph time to an amazing 4.9 seconds. The latter makes the Golf R a full second quicker than the Ford Focus ST.

Interiors and Special Features:

Besides being roomier due to the car’s increase width, the interior is also a bit sportier than the GTI’s. Highlights include sport front seats wrapped in dark or light Nappa leather in the center and head restraints upholstered in dark “Carbon” Nappa leather.

Just like in the past, the Golf R gets a sporty, three-spoke steering wheel with a chrome "R" logo placed on the lower crossbar, light-blue tachometer and speedometer, door trim panels offered with a "Carbon Touch" design, and other "R" logos placed on the radio or navigation system touchscreen.

Safety features:

To help keep occupants safe, the new Golf provides a combination of both passive and active safety systems. The Golf has been engineered to meet all current crash regulations and features no fewer than six airbags as standard.
