Quick Look

Audi has done a great job with the newest addition to the family, the 2016 Audi A3. By making minor changes all around, the A3 is bound to remain a success.

Full Review

The 2016 Audi A3 is an amazing vehicle, since it is the type of car that will undoubtedly appeal to a lot of drivers out there. The beauty of this car is that besides featuring a plethora of features, it was built by a prestigious luxury company, which makes it that much more desirable. With the market for small luxury cars increasing, Audi has decided to really make sure their small luxury car line has everything these customers are looking for.

The exterior of the car is really nice, but it’s identical to a lot of Audi’s other models, though smaller, of course. The A3’s grille is similar to that of every other Audi, which is not exactly unusual. Same thing goes for the headlights, which rely on the same design as seen last year and in every other model released this year. However, there is a good reason why Audi does this and that’s because the design looks good – it works. Surprisingly, the rear is where Audi has applied most of the changes to the current lineup, with the taillights having received more tweaks than any other aspect of the vehicle. On top of that, Audi has also kept the A3’s spoiler, which makes it look a bit sportier than it would otherwise.

Audi has done an equally marvellous job with the cabin since it seamlessly matches the exterior design. It looks pretty sporty, especially with the padded steering wheel. The centre console looks to be very user-friendly as it involves only a couple of buttons and not much else. The screen is controlled through a function located near the gearstick. The materials used for the dashboard and the seats are of high quality – as they should be. Don’t expect to find cheap plastics here.

Under the hood, the new Audi A3 offers several solid engine, while will vary by trim. The 1.8T model comes with a 1.8-litre engine that can produce 170 horsepower and front-wheel drive. The 2.0T quattro comes with a 2.0-litre engine, which can pump out 220 horsepower, and all-wheel drive. Both engines are direct-injected.

Overall, the 2016 Audi A3 is a great car that will definitely appeal to a lot of drivers out there. Thanks to a wonderful set of engines, a luxurious cabin and solid exterior design, the Audi A3 is a car few people can say no to and ultimately can be considered a threat to many of its key competitors.

Power and Performance:

The 2016 Audi A3 will soon be available with four different powertrains, not counting the sporty S3 that is treated somewhat as a separate model. The A3 can be had with front-wheel drive as a 1.8T model, with a 170-horsepower, 1.8-liter engine; as a 2.0T quattro (all-wheel-drive) model, with a 220-hp, 2.0-liter engine; with a 2.0-liter TDI diesel making 150 hp and featuring front-wheel drive; and as the yet-to-arrive e-tron plug-in hybrid with a 150-hp 1.4-liter turbo and a 102-hp electric motor.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of all A3s and S3s ventures into new aesthetic territory for the brand. The previous generation's somewhat cluttered instrument panel has been completely excised. The layout is focused around a horizontal dash dominated by round vents, with a new screen up high in the center that tucks neatly into the dash when the power is off and reemerges when the car is started—a uniquely German solution to infotainment. A trio of small climate-control knobs and a thin shelf of buttons reside along the dash's midline, while a small, hooded gauge cluster leaves plenty of dash space open.

An inlay smoothly wraps around the top forward portion of the dash, ahead of the driver and front passenger, flowing smoothly into the door trim and leaving the dash to jut out and meet the doors at more of a space-expanding right angle. While we like that, the interior details feel a little misguided, as if some interior stylist was trying too hard to dress the cabin up with brightwork. Shimmering chrome rings around the climate vents are a little distracting in bright sunlight, and it lends a busier look to an otherwise clean appearance. At the same time, other portions of the cabin can appear bare, especially on models that don't have all of the option boxes checked.

Safety features:

While the A3 doesn't quite manage five-star ratings in all categories from the federal government (it earns only four for frontal impact and rollover), it has earned Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with top 'good' ratings in all categories of testing—including the tough new small overlap frontal impact test. Those ratings are for the 2015 sedan and are likely to carry over to 2016 four-door models. The Sportback and Carbiolet have not been tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS, and they may or may not undergo testing in the future.
