Quick Look

The new 2016 Audi S6 is another example of companies using their mid-cycle update to make very minor changes, which can only mean they are confident their look, power and safety features are amazing. However, there are some noteworthy changes done to this new model.

Full Review

The Audi S6 is back for 2016 and it still looks absolutely incredible. Most of the vehicle isn’t that different from the previous model, however there are enough changes this year for drivers to go for this new model, rather than the 2015. The Audi S6 is already considered to be one of the top sedans of its type, and at this point, they are clearly making their best efforts to maintain that spot, or even go higher. Audi’s brand has made a huge splash in the car industry so far – let’s see how far it can go with their newer lineups because it can climb even farther up the ladder.

There aren’t many changes done to the already perfectly executed exterior designs of the Audi S6. If you really look into the small details, you would be able to see that Audi has decided to make their grille a bit sharper on the edges, and the front bumper is slightly a bit more angular. At the back, we can see some versions with a wider exhaust pipe, which help it blend in more with the bottom bumper behind the vehicle. Audi has also finally solved the issue of the taillights looking like an overbite, by reshaping them this time. Also, of course, both headlights and taillights are equipped with LED lighting, to add to the luxurious look Audi always had.

Inside, we didn’t spot any major alterations other than the new trim options and colour. Audi has, however, improved the display for its latest infotainment system by including a faster graphics processor. Also, the new hardware helps integrate the features the system offers like blind spot detection and lane departure warning. Aside from the new technology, we cannot forget the comfortable spacing Audi offers to drivers. With this space, the S6 allows for a larger variety of people to be able to comfortably drive this vehicle. In addition, the cargo space will be about 14.1 cubic feet, which is more than enough for a luxury sedan.

After checking out what is going on under the hood of the new 2016 Audi S6, we can see three variants of engines: the 2.0T, 3.0T and TDI. With the 2.0T model, there is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, which can produce 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard on the 2.0T. The 3.0T model has a 3.0-litre supercharged V6, which pushes out 333 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the TDI model has a 3.0-litre diesel engine, which can generate 240 horsepower and 428 pound-feet with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Evidently, Audi has done a magnificent job yet again with the 2016 Audi S6. It’s bound to catch plenty of attention this year. The competitors really need to find a way to beat them out, but until then, the 2016 Audi S6 will be, in the eyes of many, one of the best.

Power and Performance:

There are more improvements in the powertrain department. In Europe, the S6 lineup begins with a 150-hp 2.0-liter diesel and a 190-hp 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder. We will once again see a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder (perhaps with a small bump over the current 220 horsepower) and a 333-hp supercharged V-6, although that one has been extensively revised to improve efficiency. There are additional diesel engines on the Continent, but we’ll only get a revised 240-hp 3.0-liter V-6. So, no we won’t get the 326-horse—346 with a temporary overboost function—twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 TDI. Too bad. Above the A6, of course, sits the S6, which now gets 450 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, up from 420. The RS6 Avant, which (like every Avant) won't come to the U.S., remains at 560 horsepower in basic spec, but Europeans soon will be able to specify a 600-plus-horsepower derivative.

All gasoline-fired all-wheel-drive cars have a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the diesel gets an eight-speed conventional automatic. In good news for enthusiasts, the CVT transmission has been taken out back and shot. It was previously the gearbox of choice for front-wheel-drive models, including a 2.0T model in the U.S., but those cars will now get their own all-new dual-clutch ’box.

The face-lifted S6 makes no breakthroughs, but it will help Audi stay at the top of the game in a fiercely competitive market.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside the 2016 Audi S6’s cabin, you’ll find essentially the same amount of space and comfort found in previous models is present, meaning there’s ample room in the front seats for a range of heights and body types, while the rear seat is perhaps a bit more snug than in some of the competition, owing to its swept-back, almost coupe-like roof line. With 14.1 cubic feet of trunk space, there’s enough—if not ample—cargo space, too.

Options and equipment even at the base level remain impressive in the 2016 Audi A6, though as with any luxury brand, it’s toward the top of the spectrum that you’ll find the most compelling configurations. Of course, you’ll also pay for high-tech extras like Google Earth maps and mobile 4G LTE with WiFi hotspot access.

Safety features:

If safety is your aim, you can’t go wrong with the 2016 Audi A6—it’s one of the safest sedans on the market, regardless of price.

While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn’t yet been able to test the not-yet-on-the-market 2016 version of the A6, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the 2016 Audi A6 at five stars overall. The structurally identical 2014 model also scored five stars in NHTSA testing and top marks of “good” in all IIHS tests completed.

The A6 also offers all the active-safety features you’d expect from a luxury car, including many of those offered by rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitors, a rearview camera, a night-vision system, and a head-up display are all available. The night-vision system has been upgraded for 2016 to recognize more animal types, and the side-collision detection features have been improved as well.
