Full Review

The Buick Regal remains mostly unchanged for the 2015 model year as it underwent a significant refresh for 2014. First introduced in 1973, the Buick Regal was a signature North American car until a hiatus that started in 2004. It was reintroduced in 2011 for its fifth generation, taking on the persona of an upscale sport sedan. This launch and the tweaks made since have pushed this mid-size sedan closer and closer to luxury territory. Available in four trims, this dynamic sedan is the perfect option for smart drivers looking to increase the sportiness of their vehicle, while holding on to functionality.

The Buick Regal no longer has that boat-like sedan look that may come to mind, considering its history. The car now comes with a sleek, athletic look that has a striking presence on the road. The sloping roofline gives it the sporty look, which is only enhanced by standard 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and dual exhausts. The signature waterfall grille received an upgrade in 2014 and continues to give a bold look to front end of this car. The trim level selected can significantly affect the features on the exterior of the car. Moving up in trims will upgrade the wheel size to 19 inches as well as add xenon headlights and a sport-tuned suspension. The base trim comes well-equipped, and the further up the trim ladder buyers go, the closer they will get to a luxury sedan.

As with the exterior, the interior of the Buick Regal also comes really close to that luxury car status. The cabin looks great, and is highlighted by the use of upscale materials. The interior has two-tone themes with wood trim accents. The big shield of controls on the center stack also houses an 8-inch LCD touchscreen infotainment system. In the base model, the front seats have leather upholstery, heating functions and are eight-way power adjustable. The seats are snug and offer good support. Despite its mid-size dimensions, however, the backseat of the Regal has limited headroom due to the sloping roofline. Notable standard features in the well-equipped baseline include a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Higher trim models push further into luxury with additional features such as a heated steering wheel and navigation system.

The 2015 Buick Regal has some very respectable features that increase the luxury and capability of this mid-size sport sedan. All Buick Regals come standard with front-wheel drive, but there is an option for all-wheel drive. This optional AWD is a Haldex system that incorporates electronic limited-slip differentials and transfers power from the front to the rear and side-to-side, depending on available traction. A more luxurious feature of the Buick Regal is the infotainment system that is displayed on an 8-inch LCD touchscreen. The IntelliLink infotainment system is revamped to include large icons, smart-phone-style swipe commands and upgraded crisp graphics. This system can, however, be occasionally frustrating due to slow or missed responses.

Powering the 2015 Buick Regal is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard unless you go for the top-of-the-line GS model, which offers an optional six-speed manual with front-wheel drive. Optional on the Premium I trim is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that has eAssist. The output on this engine in 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, and the standard transmission is a six-speed automatic.

The Buick Regal is the perfect entry-level luxury sedan for buyers looking to up their sophistication without breaking the bank.

The Regal's primary engine for 2014 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 259 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is newly optional. A six-speed automatic transmission is mandatory unless you spring for the GS, which offers an optional six-speed manual with front-drive (the GS AWD is automatic-only).

In Edmunds testing, an all-wheel-drive Regal accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, which is impressively quick for an entry-level luxury sedan with AWD.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the 2014 Buick Regal features a redesigned dashboard with reduced button clutter compared to the previous layout. The appearance is upscale, and materials quality is satisfactory, if not quite luxury-grade. The front seats are surprisingly snug and supportive; slim folks will smile, but the broader of beam may wish for more wiggle room. The backseat is more cramped than the Regal's midsize dimensions would suggest, and the sloping roof line is a double whammy for rear headroom and rearward visibility.

Safety features:

The 2014 Buick Regal comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front seat side-impact airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Rear-seat side airbags are standard on Premium II and GS. The standard OnStar system includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, an emergency button, a stolen vehicle locator and remote door unlock. The optional Driver Confidence Package #1 includes blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert and frontal collision warning systems. The additional Driver Confidence Package #2 further adds a more sophisticated frontal collision mitigation system that initiates automatic braking in potential crash situations.
