Quick Look

The 2015 Buick Enclave offers all the capabilities one would expect from a crossover in the price range, including attractive exterior design and a spacious cabin. However, it does suffer from slightly subpar performance that puts it behind some of its competitors, like the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia. The best part of this vehicle is the wide selection of safety features on offer, which include rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure alerts, adaptive headlights and a blind-spot warning system.

Full Review

If you’re looking for the safest crossover on the market, look no further than the 2015 Buick Enclave. Since crossovers are arguably minivans in disguise, it should come as no surprise that safety would be – or should be – the number one concern for many prospective Enclave owners. That being said, safety isn’t the only good thing this car has to offer. Its superb exterior design, spacious cabin and a wide array of special features all manage to lift this crossover above its competition, which includes formidable opponents like the Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse and Ford Flex.

On the outside, the 2015 Enclave boasts curvy lines and neat details, but some may be deterred by the car’s bulging backside and long exhaust pipes. At the front, however, you will find Buick’s beautiful “waterfall” grille and stretched out headlights. The roof comes with the standard luggage racks, which make the outer body look a touch more rugged. You can also invite the outdoors into the car by adding the optional power moonroof with fixed sunlight for back passengers.

Speaking of the inside, the cabin offers a delightful front panel with aesthetically pleasing instrumentation and fantastic implementation of the IntelliLink touchscreen display. What’s good about the way the touchscreen is integrated is the fact that it relies on both physical and digital buttons. The latter unfortunately can be a little too sensitive to the touch, especially when you’re driving.

In terms of space, you can get either seven- or eight-passenger seating, depending on your trim. The lower trims come standard with seven seats, while the higher trims offer eight. The former offers captain’s chairs in the second row and a simple bench in the third. As for legroom, you’ll find that there is plenty of it across all trims, even in the third row. The cargo area is quite generous too, though it gets even more generous if you fold the third-row seats.

The one area that is a true disappointment is under its slick-looking hood. You can pick only one engine – a 3.6-litre V6 that can produce 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. You can choose either a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive model, while the engine is combined strictly with a six-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the fuel economy in the new Buick Enclave is not really up to task, with the EPA ratings for the front-drive variant being 16.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. Its rivals, like the Acura MDX and Infiniti QX60, offer much better numbers in this department, while also pumping out more power. The Enclave’s towing capacity is 4,500 pounds, which is not bad, but its competitors, like the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia, can tow up to 5,200 pounds, putting this engine to shame.

As for the much lauded safety features, you can get turn-signal-integrated mirrors,high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, OnStar emergency assistance, remote antitheft alarm and a post-collision safety system. The top Premium Group trim comes with back cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure alerts, adaptive headlights and a blind-spot warning system.

So, is the 2015 Buick Enclave worth the sticker price of over $40,000? For the most part yes. However, it is not the best crossover on the market by any stretch of the imagination. A good chunk of its competitors offer either the same or better capabilities, so if you’re not sure which crossover to get, check out the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia first before moving on to this one.

Power and Performance:

Buick offers only one drivetrain for the 2015 Buick Enclave, and while it's not a rocket, we don't think you'll be disappointed in its smooth acceleration, even loaded down with family members.

Buick offers the Enclave in front-drive or with available all-wheel drive, which is really only necessary if you experience extended winter weather. The Enclave can tow up to 4,500 pounds, which should be more than enough if you plan to tow a couple of jet-skis or a small boat out to the lake.

The Enclave handles more deftly than some luxury cars, and its ride is better than many. Last year Buick fitted new dampers at the front and revised those in the rear for a more absorbent ride. If you get the larger 20-inch wheels, you'll add a little more harshness, even though it's still softer and more refined than other three-row crossovers.

Interiors and Special Features:

Step into the 2015 Buick Enclave and you'll see a handsome front panel with stylized instrument faces and clean integration of the IntelliLink touch-screen display. The display blends hard buttons and touch-based controls, the latter of which can be – if you'll excuse the pun – too touchy, especially when you're driving at freeway speeds. Seven-passenger seating is standard across the line, with an 8-passenger setup an option in the two higher trims. The former has two captain's chairs in the second row, while the latter uses a bench. Legroom is generous even in the third row, as is rear cargo space.

Safety features:

Antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags and 3-row head airbags, along with Buick’s unique center-mounted front airbag system all remain standard safety equipment on the 2015 Buick Enclave, as do the LED daytime running lights from a mid-2014 refresh. Additionally, turn-signal-integrated mirrors, high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, OnStar emergency assistance, a post-collision safety system and a remote antitheft alarm are also expected back for the 2015 Enclave lineup. Meanwhile, look for the top-shelf 2015 Enclave Premium Group to return flaunting standard safety extras like lane-departure and rear cross-traffic alerts, as well as a blind-spot warning system and adaptive headlights.
