Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the most diverse compact cars in its class. Between the sedan, hatchback, and the race-worthy Evolution model, there’s a Lancer that’s sure to hit anyone’s sweet spot. It may not be the most fuel efficient car in its class, but it definitely makes up for it with the amount of options you have to make the car your own. This year’s 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer has received a few touch-ups to make it even more appealing than it already was.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact sport sedan and features the automaker’s famous All Wheel Control all-wheel-drive system. There are four trim levels available to choose from: the DE, SE, GT, and Limited package. Some of the exterior features on the 2014 Lancer include auto-off halogen headlights, heated side-view mirrors, chrome accent front grille, side sill extensions, roof-rack plugin accommodations, and new for 2014, redesigned 16-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels.  It might not be the most striking looking vehicle on the roads, it still maintains Mitsubishi’s unique identity and continues to be one of Mitsubishi Motor’s best-selling vehicles.

Under the hood, the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer SE comes with a 2.4-litre dual overhead cam four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).  It pumps out 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque; it’s not the quickest or strongest engine on the road today but it definitely gets the job done. The base engine on the lower trim levels of the 2014 Lancer get a 2.0-litre engine which puts out 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. As far as fuel economy goes, the 2.4-litre engine will get you 13.1 L/100km city driving and 9.4 L/100km on the highway. If you stick to the 2.0-litre base engine you’ll get 9.4 L/100km city driving and 6.9 L/100km on the highway.

As mentioned before, the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer is available with the legendary Mitsubishi All Wheel Control all-wheel-drive system for robust handling and improved traction in adverse driving conditions. One of the driving modes allows for the car to remain in two-wheel-drive but will automatically kick into four-wheel-drive if driving conditions warrant the need for 4WD. The system works relatively well and proves to be effective when hugging tight corners and lets you get a really nice grip on the road. The car handles relatively well but is a bit numb in comparison to models such as the Honda Civic or the Ford Fusion.

On the inside of the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer you’ll find some great features. Standard features in the SE model include steering wheel-mounted cruise control and audio switches, a pair of front cup holders, remote keyless entry system, air conditioning with a micron filter, and heated front seats just to name a few. New standard features for 2014 include a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, rear-view camera system, and an upgraded seating surface fabric. Legroom and headroom are ample in the backseat and can comfortably seat five adults. The hard plastic on the backdoors looks a little bit cheap but is understandable in keeping the price of the car reasonable. The storage space in the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer’s trunk is about 12.3 cubic feet which is about average for a sport sedan and can easily fit your weekend groceries.

When it comes down to it, the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer is a great choice if you want a sporty car to zip around in without breaking the bank. With its beautifully designed exterior and detailed styling, you’ll be sure to catch everyone’s eye with this compact rally car.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer ES is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a CVT is optional. In Edmunds performance testing, a manual-shift Lancer DE accelerated to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, while the CVT version ran that dash in 9.1 seconds. Both are average times for this segment. In terms of fuel economy, the 2.0-liter achieves an EPA-estimated 9.4 L/100km city driving and 6.9 L/100km on the highway and 8.11 L/.100km combined with the automatic transmission. Both are average ratings for this class of car.

The Lancer SE and GT upgrade to a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. The SE comes standard with a CVT and all-wheel drive. The GT has front-wheel drive and the five-speed manual standard, while its optional CVT features a Manual mode with simulated gear ratios operated via shift paddles on the steering wheel. In Edmunds testing, a GT with a manual transmission accelerated from zero to 60 in 7.7 seconds, which is quick for this class. The front-wheel-drive 2.4-liter gets 13.1 L/100km city driving and 9.4 L/100km on the highway and 9.0 L/100km combined with the automatic.

The Ralliart features a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that thumps out 237 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through an automated dual-clutch manual transmission with shift paddles and an active center differential. The Ralliart dispatches the 0-60 dash in a sizzling 5.8 seconds, but has notably poorer fuel efficiency, with ratings of 13.1/9.4/11.8.

Interiors and Special Features:

Even the least-expensive Lancer offers decent features for its price of just under $18,000. Included are keyless entry and auto-off headlights. The SE costs a few thousand more but includes an automatic transmission, a stronger engine, all-wheel drive, 6.1-inch touch-screen audio, and heated front seats. Ralliart models feature an excellent turbocharged engine and a more sophisticated version of Mitsubishi's all-wheel-drive system, while Evo models are performance-minded with 291 horsepower, Brembo brakes and customizable all-wheel-drive.

Many of the extras available for the Lancer are wrapped into packages that vary by trim. Base models can be spruced up with a hands-free communication system, 6-speaker audio system, and rear disc brakes in favor of the older drum type. Higher trims can be outfitted with a power sunroof, Rockford-Fosgate premium sound with a 10-inch trunk-mounted subwoofer, navigation, HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights, and leather seating.

Safety features:

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer family includes a list of safety equipment that's typical for this class, but its crisp, responsive handling may prove an asset in avoiding an accident.

With front side airbags, side-curtain bags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control. and a driver's knee airbag all included throughout the Lancer line, there's nothing sorely missing--at least not in a car with the price point of the base Lancer DE.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Lancer top 'good' ratings in frontal offset, side impact, and rear impact tests, along with the roof strength test. And in federal tests, the Lancer sedan and Sportback both earned four stars in both frontal and side crash categories, for an overall rating of four (out of five) stars.

Neither agency extends these results to Evolution and Ralliart models. The Evolution has its own exclusive, stronger and performance-focused body structure.

Because of the Lancer's rather tall beltline and thick rear pillars, it could be tough for some to see out when changing lanes or backing up (taller drivers won't have issue), so check that on the test drive.
