Quick Look

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the most efficient and cheapest vehicles currently on the market. Unfortunately, both of these attributes work against it since its performance, cabin size and design are all incredibly subpar. Its 1.2-litre three-cylinder can produce only 74 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque, which is not enough juice even for a vehicle of this size. As such, the fuel economy you get in return feels undeserved.

Full Review

If you need a small five-door hatchback, then there’s no better option than the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage. In fact, this vehicle is so small that it almost matches a minicar in terms of size. The word “almost” is the key here. Overall, however, this is a painfully mediocre car that has very little to offer in terms of value. Its engine is subpar, its cabin is small and its design isn’t all that appealing. The only thing that it has going for it is its amazing fuel economy – thanks to its size. Its low price – $12,498 – is also noteworthy, but since its overall quality is so subpar, the price makes total sense.

In terms of exterior design, the 2014 Mirage isn’t exactly edgy due its jellybean shape, but it is passable. And if you take into account an exterior body kit and a selection of whacky paint colours, like Kiwi Green and Plasma Purple, you can make the vehicle look a bit better. It has 14-inch wheels, which reduce rotational mass, while being incredibly cheap to produce. The actual body is made from high-strength steel. Because of all these design choices, the car weighs only 2,000 pounds, which helps the fuel economy and maneuverability.

The interior of the Mitsubishi Mirage is so simple it can sometimes hurt – though it does contribute to the car’s low price tag. The dash layout is so standard that anyone can figure out how to work its heating and audio controls. However, the armrests are ridiculously hard, the glove compartment feels cheap and the cargo cover connects to the back door with just one string. Fortunately, the front-seat occupants do get decent space and well-contoured seats, which are actually quite comfortable. If you head to the back, you’ll find that the headroom is a lot tighter, but you can fit two adults – or even three if you really, really have to.

On the powertrain side of things, the Mitsubishi Mirage offers a tiny 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, which comes with a standard five-speed manual transmission. If you want to squeeze out as much fuel economy as possible, you'll need to spend at least $1,000 on the wide-ratio continuously-variable transmission. Unfortunately, the car’s acceleration is just too low, while the sound it makes in the process is just painful. It’s a good thing then that the Mirage's fuel economy numbers rival the efficiency of quite a few hybrids.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is not a good vehicle – but it’s not trying anyway. If you need a new car right this second, but you can’t afford the majority of new cars on the market, then this is a good option, especially because of its excellent fuel economy. Otherwise, steer clear!

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is not a fast or powerful car. It comes with just one engine, a 1.2-liter three-cylinder that puts out 74 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque. That puts it among the least powerful cars sold in the U.S., in the same category as the Smart ForTwo (at 70 hp). Even the Scion iQ has 94 hp; the Fiat 500 offers 101 hp, and if you move up the price scale to hybrids, the Toyota Prius C powertrain is rated at 99 hp and the Honda Insight at 98 hp.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the Mitsubishi Mirage is utterly simplistic, which can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, the dash layout is so simple an 18th-century fur trapper could figure out the heating and audio controls. On the other hand, the armrests are brutally hard, the glove compartment opens with a shin-whacking "thunk," and the cargo cover connects to the rear hatch with just one lonely string. Despite such thrifty touches, the front occupants enjoy decent space and nicely contoured seats. In back, head space is tighter, but there's enough space for two adults, maybe even three if things get desperate.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage include four-wheel antilock brakes (front discs, rear drums), front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, and traction and stability control. Front and rear parking sensors are optional on both trim levels, while a rearview camera is optional only on the ES trim.

In Edmunds brake testing, the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average distance for a car in this class.
