Quick Look

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback may not be as performance-oriented as its sedan sibling, but it does offer elegant design and plenty of features. The lacklustre engine in question is the 2.4-litre four-cylinder in the GT version, which does not seem to be powerful enough to transport all the items you can stick into the hatchback’s hefty trunk.

Full Review

The 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback is a four-door hatchback version of the Lancer sedan, looking almost exactly that as that offering right until you reach the back seats. Behind those, the Sportback comes with a hefty amount of cargo space – almost four times more than what you get in the sedan. Unfortunately, its powertrains are nowhere near as good as the car’s exterior design lets on. So, if you’re looking for a more aggressive vehicle, then this is not it. If not, there are enough features to make up for this omission.

Overall, the new Lancer Sportback doesn’t quite deviate from what we’ve come to know about the vehicle, but it does offer plenty of fascinating new design quirks. First of all, it sports the "Sportback" shape its name has promised us. As a result, it’s both edgy and aggressive, which you’ll notice right away in its aggressive front grille, angled headlamps, chrome-tipped exhaust and a raised back spoiler. You might also notice that it comes with Thule sport rack sockets that allow the car’s roof to carry just about anything – from bikes to kayaks. Sure, the car looks a little too familiar, but that shouldn’t manner because it still looks good.

On the inside, however, the design is noticeably generic, while the extensive use of hard plastics cheapens the overall look. When it comes to comfort and ergonomics, the front seats provide limited thigh support, while the lack of a telescoping steering wheel can make taller people feel very uncomfortable. That said, the back seats are actually quite comfortable, thanks to a better than average amount of legroom. You also get 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space, and if you fold the back seats down, you can get up to 52.7 cubic feet of room. All the onboard gadgets do their job, but they don’t deliver anything beyond the bare minimum. Gauges and controls are simple-to-use, while audio, phone and navigation functions can be utilised through the Fuse voice control system. However, the latter isn’t as sophisticated as Ford's Sync system, though it is very easy to use.

Under the hood, the 2014 Lancer Sportback offers a selection of two engines. The ES version has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, while the GT comes with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that can yield 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive are standard with both engines. There’s no manual transmission on the menu, but the GT version does come with simulated gear ratios that you can operate through shift paddles. Neither of these engines are bad per se, but they don’t quite live up to the car’s magnificent shape and design.

No matter how you look at it, the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback is a marvelous vehicle that more than justifies its already relatively low cost. If you’re looking for a hatchback that’s spacious and slick-looking, give this one a try.

Power and Performance:

With two available trims, the Lancer Sportback comes with a choice of two engines: a 2.0-liter in-line-four and a bigger 2.4-liter in-line-four. The former a develops 148 horsepower at 6,000 rpm to go along with 145 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm, while the latter produces 168 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 167 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. No performance numbers were disclosed but we expect the Lancer Sportback to be able to spring from 0 to 60 mph in a little over 10 seconds with a 115 mph top speed to go with it.

Interiors and Special Features:

Given its muscular exterior styling, you might expect the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback to offer an equally handsome interior. Unfortunately, the design is rather generic and extensive use of hard plastic materials cheapens the overall effect.

From a comfort and ergonomics perspective, the front seats offer limited thigh support, and the lack of a telescoping steering wheel can make it difficult for both shorter and taller people to find an ideal driving position. The rear seats are comfortable enough, with a better than average amount of legroom. Behind those 60/40-split seats are 13.8 cubic feet of cargo room; fold both sections down and you open up 52.7 cubic feet of space.

Gauges and controls are generally straightforward, and audio, phone and navigation functions can be engaged via the Fuse voice control system. Though the latter is less sophisticated than Ford's similar Sync system, it still makes it relatively easy to select your favorite tunes or input a destination.
