The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is the more affordable vehicle in the CLA class, featuring a powerful engine and slick exterior design. Its cabin is quite a treat too, offering high-quality materials and stylish looks – though it lacks proper headroom due to a low roofline. Those looking for good fuel economy will find it here too since the car’s EPA ratings of 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway are very impressive.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is the most affordable model in the CLA family, costing only $33,900. Its more expensive cousin, the CLA45 AMG, costs $49,800, but it offers a more powerful and engine more features. That said, if power output is not your main concern, it’s better to save your money and get the CLA250 model instead.

The body of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA250 (and CLA45 for that matter) boasts an imposing presence, thanks to its strong lines and arched profile. That said, you’ll find that its body is surprisingly skinny, featuring very small tires, which give it a more aerodynamic feel, but at the cost of its more aggressive features. Its shape is even more aerodynamic than that of the Toyota Prius, possessing a drag coefficient of just 0.23.

Step inside, and you’ll find a very cosy and relatively “tight” cabin – that feels even more intimate than the one in the C-Class models. The problem with this is that the C-Class sedan is a smaller car overall, so its bigger cabin is a neat, little surprise, whereas here, the small size is a disappointment. We blame this issue on the car’s lower roofline, which does tend to get in the way of comfort. In spite of this, the materials – from the dash and trim bits to the standard MP-Tex upholstery – are all top-notch. The mirror control frame and plastic features like cup holders feel a bit on the cheaper side, but otherwise everything looks and feels great. Overall, this cabin is far more upscale than its price tag seems to suggest.

But the best part about this sedan is its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which can generate 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions, featuring front-drive configuration as a standard – though all-wheel drive is available with 4Matic models. The 2014 CLA250 actually produces quite a bit of power, being able to accelerate relatively quickly, so it’s a surprise that its fuel economy numbers are so low. Its EPA ratings are 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway.

So, if you’re looking for a decently-priced, powerful and good-looking sedan, then you can’t go wrong with the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250. We highly recommend it.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 208 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automated manual transmission (with shift paddles) routes power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive is available on the CLA250 4Matic. In Edmunds testing, a CLA250 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a brisk 6.4 seconds.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class feels intimate on the inside, especially when compared to the C-Class sedan – which actually has a smaller overall footprint but a bigger interior. Credit (or criticize) the CLA's low-slung roofline for the counterintuitive discrepancy. Nonetheless, the CLA's cabin is outfitted with surprisingly decent materials, from the dash and trim components to the standard MB-Tex upholstery, which didn't make us miss real leather hides. Our only gripes came from small plastic bits like the cup holder and the mirror control surrounds. Other than those minor slips, the CLA's interior feels more upmarket than its price point might suggest.

Safety features:

Since it's brand-new, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 hasn't been crash-tested by either of the U.S. agencies that regularly report such data. When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) offer up some data, we'll update this report.

We're assigning a preliminary score here given Mercedes' strong performance in crash safety and based on its standard safety equipment, which includes a driver knee airbag.

The CLA45 AMG has a few special talents woven into its standard stability control. A tap on the ESP button sends it into Sport mode, and allows more wheelslip and slide; another tap and stability control goes off. Either mode persists, but applying the brakes will re-engage stability control as long as the brakes are applied. There's also a measure of torque vectoring simulated by the CLA45's anti-lock braking; it applies braking to inside wheels to tighten cornering lines when the car's in ESP Sport mode.

Among its other standard safety features, the 2014 CLA carries a new Collision Prevention Assist function; using radar, the CLA can alert the driver of upcoming obstacles when it's traveling at more than 4 mph, and can calculate the amount of brake force needed to avoid an impact. The integrated collision-warning system has Volvo-like output, with visible and audible alerts when you're about to pile into someone, or something.

Also standard is Attention Assist and its coffee-cup reminder to pull over and avoid drowsy driving.

Safety options include adaptive cruise control; blind-spot monitors; lane-keeping assistance; and parking sensors with parking assist.

With the push to keep CLA prices relatively low, we'd hope Mercedes will soon break out its rearview camera as an inexpensive stand-alone option. Rearward visibility isn't good, thanks to the sloping roofline, and a surround-view camera like the one in the 2014 E-Class would be even more appreciated, given the CLA's probable home in plenty of urban parking spaces.
