Full Review

The Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic is the base model of the 2014 CL-class. It’s also the only model in the lineup to have standard all-wheel drive. This luxury coupe is in the last production year of the third generation as it is awaiting a fourth-generation overhaul due for the 2015 model. The full-size coupe is based on the S-Class sedan, but offers a shorter wheelbase, sportier looks and sport-tuned suspension. The four-passenger two-door car is perfect for a buyer who is looking to have a sporty-looking car, but still values practicality.

The exterior design of the CL550 is defined by its sleek look with sporty detailing. The CL is longer than most cars in its segment, but still has a well-proportioned body. Styling cues come from the side creases that sweep under the car towards the large rear fenders, which add muscle to its body. The large front grille is equipped with a trademark Mercedes three-star emblem. The crescent-shape body has a gently-sloping roofline, forming what may very well be the best-looking CL to date. Owners are treated to active bi-xenon headlights, 18-inch wheels and an adaptive air suspension. There are also additional packages available, such as the Sport Package, which will upgrade the exterior look and performance of this vehicle. The two-door luxury coupe will turn heads for all the right reasons on the road.

The CL550 is a four-passenger coupe and has quite a large cabin to fit all four people, though taller passengers might find the headroom a little tight. The interior design is not extravagant, but has a perfect balance of functionality and luxury. Soft-touch materials and high-quality details are abundant throughout. Wood accenting and plush leather fill the cabin, giving it a comforting feel. The multi-contour front seats are supportive, and while cargo space isn’t huge, it will accommodate a few weekend bags. Notable standard features inside the CL550 include ambient lighting and great technology specs such as the COMAND electronics interface, which is unique to Mercedes.

To increase safety, buyers may look into the Driver Assistance package, which adds a collision mitigation system with automatic breaking, a blind-spot warning system and active lane-keeping assist. No matter where you need to go in this car, Mercedes ensures that you will get there comfortably and stylishly.

When you’re purchasing a car priced in the six-figures, you would hope that it comes equipped well enough that there is no distinctive selling point. While this is the case in the CL550, it is definitely the small details that set it apart. The windows on the CL550 stretch across almost the whole side of the car. These windows are “pillarless,” which allows for the rear cabin passengers to roll down their window just the same as the front seat, despite not having a door. Another notable detail is the overall comfort of the seats in the CL550 cabin. The front seats have leather upholstery, heating and ventilating functions, driver memory functions and even massage options. In the comfort of these seats, no trip will ever be too long. The CL550 is standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive, and while it is optional on the other trims, having it as a standard feature is a nice touch. This luxury coupe is jammed full of amazing features and design cues that add comfort and functionality, but the balance of not going overboard is what really sets this coupe apart.

Powering the CL550 is a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 engine that produces 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission is standard, and the car goes from 0-97 km/h in an impressive 4.6 seconds.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic is a luxury coupe that stands in a tough segment, but the unique body design and Mercedes’ detailing really set this vehicle apart. If there is plenty of money in your bank and a burning desire for a luxurious yet smart car, the CL550 is worth a look.

Interiors and Special Features:

As has been the case for many years, the CL basically borrows its dashboard and front cabin design from the S-Class sedan. Materials quality is predictably top-notch, and fit and finish is outstanding. The CL also retains Mercedes' classic "pillarless" side window design: The rear windows power down just like the fronts, and with all the windows down, there's nothing between the roof and sills but air. Although the doors are long and heavy, they open with surprising ease -- and while the power-closing feature may not be strictly necessary, your passengers will think it's neat.
