Full Review

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is tough and elegant at the same time. Everyone knows that Mercedes-Benz is branded as the luxurious choice for drivers, but that doesn’t mean it can’t do dirty, heavy jobs as well. The German manufacturer has been building high-end commercial vehicles for many years now and the 2014 Sprinter demonstrates that sophistication is as important as durability.

On the inside, the Sprinter has sharp, modern wood trims and leather upholstery seats. The luxurious cabin is familiar for those who have driven in a Mercedes, but it doesn’t do much to impress. The front seats received a more supportive design and the gearshift lever is upgraded, nevertheless, few other noticeable changes were made. With that being said, Mercedes-Benz did suit up the 2014 Sprinter with higher quality material compared to other full-size vehicles such as the Ford Transit. Also included inside the spacious interior are 5.8-inch infotainment system, USB connectivity and a 15-head-unit audio system.

Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz passenger van is equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission and turbocharged 21-liter four cylinder diesel base engine that can produce 161 hp and 265 lb/feet of torque.

Because of the Sprinter’s size, fast acceleration is a challenge. At the maximum size of 23 feet long and 9 feet high, the passenger van that delivers premium comfort also tops off at its utmost speed pretty easily. Even when upgraded to the 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine with 188 hp and 325 lb/feet of torque, the heavy van is still unable to get much more jump. Nonetheless, the diesel engine will ultimately offer better mileage compared to the rivalling vans with gasoline engines.

Both the 2500 and the 3500 model offer numerous configurations that enables the vehicle to hold up to 12 passengers and 546 cubic feet of cargo. The 2500 model has the strength to haul up to 3,479 pounds of payload and tow up to 5,000 pounds. Not bad for a van with a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,550. While the 3500 model, at 11,030 pound gross vehicle weight rating, is capable of hauling up to 4,434 pounds and towing a maximum of 7,500 pounds.

If cargo-hauling is your thing, you’ll like to know that the 2014 Sprinter has 16-inch steel wheels, hill-start assist, a wood cargo floor and 270-degree-opening rear doors. And at its tallest configuration of 6 feet 3 inches, you can literally walk inside.

Drivers can also opt for the Mercedes’ Sprinter Preferred Upfitter Program which allows the vehicle to be modified into a cab-chassis, ambulance, tow truck, moving van and other purpose-built vehicles of that nature.

Regardless of the passenger van’s functionality, passengers should be confident in the standard safety features, which include dual front airbags, Mercedes’ brake disc drying technology, roll over mitigation, enhanced understeering control, hydraulic brake assist and acceleration slip regulation.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the workhorse that rides like a chariot. While other work, cargo or passenger vans, such as the Chevrolet Express, have shown their versatile capabilities, none can compare to the experience the Sprinter offers in terms of getting the job done and feeling good while doing it.
