Negotiate Smarter with the Best Car Buying Tools

The Cadillac SRX is one of the most stylish, luxurious, and edgy SUVs on the Canadian market. The SRX comes back with minor changes this year, maintaining the handsome looks of the vehicle that consumers fell in love with. The SRX also delivers amazing performance that’s sure to make you feel like king of the roads when you get behind the wheel. It’s a great luxury SUV that’s worth your consideration if you’re in the market to buy one.

When you think luxury SUV, you expect three things: power, safety, and style. The 2014 Cadillac SRX excels on all fronts, available V6 engine, 10 airbags, and 20-inch wheels. This bad boy commands attention and definitely gets noticed when you’re out for a cruise.

When it comes to storing things in your new 2014 SRX, you won’t be disappointed. The SRX offers ample cargo room, as well as flip down seats which make for a combined total of over 61 cubic feet of storage. Cadillac also included an adjustable divider that works great for luggage and keeps everything tight. It helps to prevent everything from slipping and sliding around, putting it at risk of damage if the impact is hard enough.

Behind the wheel, the 2014 Cadillac SRX gives you everything you would expect out of a luxury SUV. Heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and the best infotainment system available on the market, the Cadillac Cue. The Cadillac Cue system is clean, simple, and easy to use. The icons could be a little bit bigger, but other than that the system is nice and responsive.

The interior is a really nice soft-touch leather material with the characteristic French stitching that Cadillac usually includes in its luxury vehicles. You also get a really nice wood grain gear selector which beautifully accentuates the two-tone leather interior of the car. The steering wheel features several command buttons which let you control your infotainment system without taking your eyes of the road.

Legroom in the second row of the 2014 Cadillac SRX and is less than expected. An average sized adult would find it a bit tight in the back, so it’s better to save the back for the kids. Other than that, the SRX includes all the standard features you’d expect included Bluetooth connectivity, iPod/MP3 connection, CD player, and internet radio.

Under the hood, the 2014 Cadillac SRX offers a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine which pumps out 308-horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. This will give a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds, in comparison to the 2013 Lexus RX350 which gives out 270-horsepower and gets you a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds. The ride is smooth and quiet and the steering is weighted enough to give the car a very firm feel.

The 2014 Cadillac SRX offers a lot for a luxury SUV. It’ll be sure to meet and surpass all your expectations for a luxury vehicle.

Power and Performance:

We'll call the 2014 Cadillac SRX confident, but not all that quick or inspiring—especially considering that it has a 308-horsepower engine under the hood.

Where does the fizz go? Part of the problem is that the SRX is geared quite tall, but the other issue is sheer weight; the 3.6-liter V-6 makes its peak torque at 2,400 rpm, so it's a relaxed combination, but even with the responsive six-speed automatic transmission the SRX just isn't that quick on its feet when a quick burst of power is needed. That said, in all-out acceleration, the SRX will make it to 60 mph in a respectable seven seconds—in the same ballpark as the Acura MDX, Lincoln MKX, or even Lexus RX 350.

You can get this vehicle with front- or all-wheel drive, and the all-wheel-drive models use a Haldex system with electronic limited-slip differential; the latter is a great choice for snowy climates and bad weather.

Sprightly and nimble are again not terms that really apply to the way the SRX handles either; it feels heavier than you might expect if you pitch it hard into a corner. It's a bit disconcerting in that its center of mass feels higher (because of your seating height) even if it isn't. But the hydraulic-assist power steering is weighted nicely, and unwinds as predictably as in most sport sedans, and the powertrain always feels refined--settling to an almost imperceptible purr at idle, while it revs with a silky tenor, and none of the intake gurgle and whoosh of GM V-6s of the not-so-distant past. One criticism is that the brakes tend to feel spongier than we’d like, and the impression is cemented with significant nosedive.

EPA ratings for the Cadillac SRX land at 14.7 to 13.8 L/100km in the city and 10.2 or 9.8 L/100km on the highway.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the SRX's interior trim has a high-quality look and feel, and everything is nicely put together for the most part. We wish some of the wood accents didn't look quite so polished, but the overall impression is an excellent blend of technology-meets-luxury.

The centerpiece of the cabin is certainly the CUE interface, which includes a crisp, clear 8-inch touchscreen that offers mostly intuitive control over audio, phone (and other electronic devices) and climate control functions. It also controls the navigation system when that option is equipped. Much like a smartphone or tablet, the CUE screen responds to familiar touch commands such as swipes and pinches, and includes tactile (haptic) feedback to let you know when a command has been accepted.

Unfortunately, the system is often slow to respond to inputs, and certain features like the slide-bar volume adjustment turn out to be more difficult to use than a conventional knob. In this class, we prefer the BMW iDrive and Mercedes-Benz COMAND interfaces (both of which use a multidirectional dial-type controller). On the upside, the SRX has a good voice recognition interface, so if you get tired of fiddling with the touchscreen, initiating commands by voice is pretty painless.

The Cadillac SRX offers ample room for four adults, although headroom is snug in the rear seat, particularly when the panoramic sunroof is in place. Cargo room is average for the class: 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 61 cubic feet with both sections of the 60/40-split rear seatbacks folded down.

Safety features:

The 2014 Cadillac SRX comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. The OnStar system includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. Front and rear parking sensors are standard on all models, while a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts are included starting on the Luxury trim level.

The optional Driver Awareness package (standard on the SRX Premium) adds forward-collision alert, lane departure warning and the safety alert driver seat. The latter vibrates on the left or right side of the seat, based on the direction in which a potential hazard looms. The optional Driver Assist package features automatic collision preparation and automatic low-speed braking, both when going forward and when in reverse.

In Edmunds brake testing, a front-drive SRX Performance came to a stop from 60 mph in 120 feet, a good number in this class. In government crash tests, the SRX received four out of five stars in frontal crash testing and five out of five stars in side crash and overall crash test ratings. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the SRX received the top rating of "Good" in the moderate overlap, side-impact and roof strength tests. The IIHS also rated the SRX's optional frontal collision warning and mitigation system as "Superior."
