Full Review

The 2014 Cadillac Escalade ESV returns to market this year unchanged. This beast of a vehicle offers a unique combination of passenger and cargo space along with superb towing capabilities. The ESV can carry up to eight passengers with enough space in the back to carry everyone’s cargo. These amenities, however, are rarely on the list of everyday needs for your average SUV buyer. This car is synonymous to what it means to live large. The sheer size of this vehicle is a serious attraction, but can also present some drivability issues. While this car is the most luxurious way to carry around eight passengers, it is not the best option in its class as far as other features go.

The exterior of this vehicle is enormous. At almost 5.5 meters long and everything that sits next to this vehicle looks miniscule in comparison. It is also important to ensure that this vehicle will be able to fit into wherever it will be stored as the average garage may not cut it. The rectangular look of this vehicle and the exuberant chrome accents solidify the ESV’s aggressive look and upgrade options will only increase this. The Cadillac Escalade ESV is a full-size, extended-wheelbase luxury SUV that is offered in four trim levels: base, Luxury, Premium and Platinum Edition. Standard on the Cadillac ESV are 18-inch alloy wheels, an adaptive and auto-leveling suspension, a locking rear differential, running boards, roof racks, automatic xenon headlights, foglights, power-folding heated mirrors with driver-side auto-dimming, a power liftgate, rear parking sensors and keyless entry and ignition. Moving up to the Luxury trim, you get 22-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded adaptive suspension, automatic high beams, a sunroof and optional power-retractable running boards. The Premium trim gives you all of this plus a distinctive interior trim and unique 22-inch alloy wheels with the option of LED headlights. The top-of-the-line Platinum Edition adds its own special exterior details and 22-inch chrome wheels to the existing features.

The cabin of the Escalade ESV continues to deliver with its excessive interior space. Seating can be arranged for seven with the standard captain’s chairs or eight by replacing these with a 60/40-split rear bench. An ESV has ample leg and headroom in each of its rows, including lots of space in the back for cargo. It is built with high-quality materials that accentuate the high-class look of this vehicle. Standard in the base trim of the ESV is tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seat with driver memory functions, heated second-row seats, a 50/50 split-folding third row seat, a power tilt-only steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The technology features include a touchscreen interface, a navigation system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone connectivity, OnStar emergency communications, voice controls and a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system with a six-CD changer, satellite radio, an iPod/USB audio interface, rear seat control and two sets of wireless headphones. The Luxury trim will add a blind-spot warning system, a power-folding and tumbling second row and heated steering wheel with the option of a rear-seat video entertainment system with a single screen. The Premium trim only has upgrade for the exterior, while the Platinum Edition adds upgraded leather upholstery, leather-trimmed dash and door tops, genuine wood accents, contrasting stitching, heated and cooled cup holders, unique interior colour choices and dual headrest-mounted screens in the standard video entertainment system.

The primary selling feature of the Cadillac Escalade ESV is the size of this vehicle without the compromise of luxury. The huge cabin is well suited to comfortably seat eight passengers and fit an excessive amount of cargo. If carrying around a small army with their stuff on a daily basis is on your check list, than this car was made for you.  Unfortunately, that’s about all that it outranks its competition for. This car is just far too extravagant for full-size luxury SUV, to the point of being unnecessarily overstuffed.

While the car is built to suit those with even the highest of standards, the functionality is lacking a bit. The size of the vehicle makes it very difficult to maneuver in traffic or tight parking garages. Also, the fuel economy isn’t that great, which is pretty much a given in a vehicle this big. The cabin of the car has some good details such as the folding second row, which gives easy access to the third row, but removing and storing the third row is a hassle. The technology system of the ESV has not been updated with Cadillac’s newest system, making it a little dated.

Standard safety features in the Escalade ESV include antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags that cover all three rows, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Tech safety features include OnStar and a blind-spot warning system.

Powering the Cadillac Escalade ESV is a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 403 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, but drivers can upgrade to all-wheel drive, if they want to. The fuel economy is, expectedly, not great at combined ratings of 14.7 liters per 100 kilometers in the rear-wheel option and 13.07 liters per 100 kilometers in all-wheel offering. Towing capacity can be up to 8,000 pounds.

Overall, the 2014 Cadillac Escalade ESV is an over-the-top luxury SUV that will appeal to only a certain person’s requirements. As far as eight-passenger vehicles go, the ESV is near the top of the list, but if you don’t have to take that many people, there are better options out there.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Cadillac Escalade ESV gets a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 403 hp and 417 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, but all-wheel drive is an option.

Accelerating from zero to 60 mph should take a little over 7 seconds, an impressive number by large SUV standards. Estimated EPA fuel economy numbers are about what you'd expect from a heavy vehicle with a powerful V8: 14 mpg city/18 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 13/18/14 with all-wheel drive. A properly equipped rear-drive Escalade ESV can tow up to 8,000 pounds, while the all-wheel-drive model's towing capacity is only slightly less at 7,700 pounds.

Interiors and Special Features:

Compared to the Chevy model upon which it's based, the 2014 Cadillac Escalade ESV offers a handsome cabin with an upscale look enhanced by high-quality materials. From a practical perspective, the gauges and controls are easy to see and operate. The Escalade hasn't received Cadillac's latest CUE electronics interface, which means the Escalade's touchscreen and overall dashboard layout looks comparatively dated. But we suspect a lot of people will actually find this older setup a little easier to use.

Regardless of whether it's fitted with the standard second-row captain's chairs or the available second-row bench, occupants of the first two rows will enjoy a generous amount of head- and legroom. The available power flip-and-fold feature for the second-row seats makes accessing the three-person third row easier, but between the climb required to get back there and the distinct shortage of legroom, the third row is really only suitable for children.

Safety features:

The 2014 Cadillac Escalade ESV comes with most of the expected standard safety features including antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags that cover all three rows, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Also standard is OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance. A blind-spot warning system is included on all but the base model.

In Edmunds testing, the regular Escalade posted excessively long braking distances, and you shouldn't expect the larger and heavier ESV to stop any shorter. In government crash tests, the Escalade earned an overall rating of four out of five stars, with five stars for overall frontal- and side-impact crash protection.
