Quick Look

The 2016 BMW 4 Series lacks serious improvement from the previous model, however that may be due to the fact that the 4 Series is incredibly well designed and you would have to look closely for flaws. Nonetheless, its interior cabin now comes standard with all the great features of the Sport Line, such as blackout trim and red stitching, and further hosts an array of technical features off the BMW iDrive system. Powertrain options remain the same, however, with the most impressive unit being a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder that produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Regardless, the new 4 Series highlights a meticulously designed upscale interior that both engages and relaxes the driver.

Full Review

The 2016 BMW 4 Series, though lacking major changes from the last facelift, is outfitted with a truly generous redesign to the interior cabin and receives a sharp new style, spacious interior cabin and two great engines. The series also benefits from a multitude of technological features native to the BMW platform that are designed to improve your driving experience. As it stands, this vehicle manages to hold its own against compact executives like the 2016 Audi A5 and Infiniti Q60.

This year’s 4 Series is minimally upgraded in terms of aesthetic appearance, receiving slight modifications to the vehicle’s front and back ends. Known for elegance and power, the new BMW boasts a much lighter body that can be attributed to extensive use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic, as well as a reshaped grille and a longer, more polished body. Though the low-slung, low-cabin stance has largely been kept as an iconic feature of the BMW, the coupe also features redesigned fenders and lights for a revitalized feel.

On the inside, however, the new BMW has been fully redesigned as the 4 Series now incorporates most of the Sport Line features that drivers previously loved. You can now receive these features free as they come standard on the 4 Series. The classically designed cabin is lined with premium materials and features more heavily bolstered seats, as well as blackout trim and a red-stitched steering wheel. It’s interior is also surprisingly spacious, integrating an impressive amount of legroom and adequate headroom throughout the vehicle’s core, complemented by generous luggage space in the back. BMW has also outfitted the center console with iDrive, a centralized driver control system that is now easier to use with straightforward menus, a quicker processor and high-resolution graphics. The system also supports SiriusXM satellite radio and utilizes Harmon/Kardon surround sound.

Under the hood, the 4 Series is equipped with an impressive engine lineup sure to please performance-oriented drivers. BMW’s entry-level 428i model sports a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Running with automatic transmission and optional rear-wheel drive, this vehicle is rated at 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Alternatively available under the 435i model is the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. With rear-wheel drive and automatic transmission, this engine offers a fuel economy of 12.8 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Though pretty much identical in fuel economy, the 435i is clearly favourable in terms of power and should definitely be considered for the performance-oriented driver.

BMW vehicles are likewise equipped with a variety of standard safety provisions such as antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and rollover protection for convertible models. Optional features include but are not limited to front and rear parking sensors, a rear view camera, blind spot monitoring and lane-departure warning.

As it stands, the 2016 BMW 4 Series seriously competes with other models of its kind, specifically in the realms of interior appearance due to new integration of its previous Sport Line aesthetic. If a fresh interior profile with tons of technical gadgetry and driver assistance is what you’re looking for, this year’s 4 Series definitely fits the bill.

Power and Performance:

The 428i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to generate 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. That puts it within reach of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds with either the manual or automatic transmission, with grippy summer tires. You also get a 155-mph, electronically limited top speed. Step up to one of the 435i models and you get the familiar 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine, rated at 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. It's just as quick as the last-gen M3, with the 435i sprinting to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds with the manual transmission, or five seconds flat with the auto box.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Sport Line delivers 18-inch wheels, more heavily bolstered seats, blackout trim, a red-stitched steering wheel, and a red-accented key fob. Also newly standard is an alarm system, for which BMW charged $400 on 2015 428i models. The 435i gains keyless entry, lumbar support, SiriusXM radio, and Harman Kardon surround sound, effectively deleting the 435i convertible’s $950 Premium package and $875 stereo option. Leather is still optional on the 435i coupe.
