The 2014 Volvo S60 sedan was Volvo’s pitch to be a rival for the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Now, Volvo is fully aware that its cars don’t have the same appeal as those cars and they’ve done quite a bit to crank up the “lust factor.” The redesigned body and new sporty handling become extremely appealing once you get in the car and take it for a spin. Keep reading to find out why the 2014 S60 is a great car to consider if you’re looking for a fun, sporty sedan at a great value.

So if we’re talking about lust, lets talk about the looks. The redesigned Volvo S60 got a new expressive front-end with what Volvo calls focused and determined-looking headlamps. It also has a wider front grille with new daytime running LED lights. They’ve also cleaned up the front end of the car by moving the washer nozzles out of sight under the bonnet. The Volvo badge at the front of the car is also larger, and the car seems to wear it with more pride than ever.

One thing that’s great about German luxury sedans is when you step inside they feel really luxurious. However, once you get inside this Swedish sedan, it feels like its lost some of its va-va-voom, it must have gotten lost in translation somewhere. It definitely looks great and has some nice touches, but we were looking for something a bit more special.

One thing that really gets us excited in the 2014 Volvo S60 is the infotainment system. It uses Volvo’s new censor-connected touch system which allows the user to easily get through the apps without hassle. You can even hook up your email and access the web while you’re stuck in traffic. The infotainment also comes with so many music apps like Spotify and TuneIn that the amount of music that lays at your fingertips is unbelievable.

When you take the 2014 Volvo S60 out for a ride you’ll notice right away that the seats are so comfortable from both the driver’s and passenger’s perspective. The seats are really well cushioned and hug the body. The back row also gets a ton of room which would easily fit three people.

On the move, there’s so much to like about the 2014 S60. The suspension is soft enough to soak up speed bumps but firm enough to stop the car from rolling around too much. The base T5 model gets a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine that offers enough power to make anyone happy with 250-horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. The engine is also very frugal on its gas consumption clocking in at a fuel efficiency rating of 11.2 L/100km city driving and 7.8 L/100km on the highway.

There are so many wonderful features in the 2014 Volvo S60 that it’s truly a great tradeoff for a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. The power, the great looks, and the amazing features are just a few reasons why we love it. In all fairness, it’s definitely not the perfect car. However, Volvo did a great job at bringing this vehicle up to luxury standards and introducing a new rival to the luxury sedan market.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 S60's performance matches its aggressive styling in most trims, though the high-end R-Design models may not deliver quite the handling and refinement to match some enthusiasts' demands.

There's more than enough power to please everyone else, though, with power coming from turbocharged in-line five- or six-cylinder engines. There's also the option of front- or all-wheel drive for those in need of an all-weather sedan. As a front-wheel-drive model, the base T5 is capable of getting from 0-60 in only 6.8 seconds–not shabby for a base engine.

At the top rung is the S60 R Design, which essentially gets a 'chipped' version of the same turbo six good for 325 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque; and there's really no fuel economy or drivability tradeoff. To go with it, the R Design gets a unique tuned suspension system standard, offering crisper handling and sportier ride.

The S60 T6 gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder, rated at 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. It feels even stronger than its numbers might suggest, and while it's disappointing that there's no manual gearbox available the six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive pair for easy driving, fast acceleration, confident traction and great all-weather capability. These models can get to 60 mph in about 5.8 seconds.

Interiors and Special Features:

Interior materials in the 2014 Volvo S60 are on par with the rest of the entry-level luxury sedan class. The heavier graining on the dash and doors won't suit everyone, but there's no denying that the interior leather, vinyl and plastic are quality materials. Volvo's unique Scandinavian take on wood and metal accents also gives the S60's cabin more personality than most rivals.

The straightforward dual-temperature adjustment dials and "mode man" pictogram make climate control adjustments simple and intuitive. The audio system is fairly easy to use, too, though the array of small audio buttons looks somewhat dated. The interface for the available DVD-based navigation system is far superior than that of past Volvos, but the navigation software still feels a few years behind rivals' systems.

As you expect in a Volvo, both the standard front seats and the optional sport seats offer excellent long-trip comfort and proper support. Unfortunately, the backseat isn't quite as accommodating. The seats themselves are supportive, but legroom and foot room are tight for adults taller than 5-foot-8. Competitors like the C-Class are similarly sized, but cars like the Acura TL and BMW 3 Series are more welcoming for taller passengers.

The trunk's 12-cubic-foot capacity is a bit small for the class as well, but a low liftover height makes it easy to access the space. Both the rear seats and the front passenger seat fold down, and there's a separate ski pass-through.

Safety features:

Upholding Volvo's sterling reputation for passenger protection, the 2014 S60 comes loaded with standard safety features that include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, whiplash-reducing front head restraints and City Safety. The latter can help the driver avoid rear-ending other vehicles or a stationary object at speeds of up to 19 mph by automatically applying the brakes if he doesn't react in time.

Included in the optional Technology package is Volvo's pedestrian detection feature, which can apply full braking force (reducing speed by as much as 22 mph) to help you avoid hitting pedestrians and cyclists who are at least 31 inches in height. This package also includes electronic warnings for driver inattention, lane departure and impending collision, the last of which includes automatic braking. Other safety options include front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a blind-spot warning system (which includes warnings about rapidly approaching vehicles on either side) and rear cross-traffic alerts.

In Edmunds brake testing, the T5 came to a stop from 60 mph in a below-average 128 feet. With its bigger brakes and high-performance tires, the T6 managed to stop in an excellent 114 feet.

The government gave the Volvo S60 a perfect five stars for overall crash protection, with five stars each for total frontal and side crash protection. In testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the S60 received the best possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, small-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests. The S60 is notable in that it's one of the few cars to earn a "Good" rating in that new small-overlap frontal-offset test. The IIHS also rated the S60's optional frontal collision warning and mitigation system as "Superior."
