Quick Look

The 2014 Volvo XC70 combines sporty cross-country style of an SUV with the sophistication of a modern luxury sedan. Active families will find the four-door, five-passenger wagon spacious and reliable for long-distance recreational road trips and brief stop offs at soccer practice.

Full Review

The 2014 Volvo XC70 has introduced significant upgrades to the interior: including a folding front passenger seat, heated windows and steering wheel, a digital gauge cluster display and an innovative collision mitigation system that detects forward collisions and close encounters with pedestrians and cyclists. The comfortable five-passenger interior, with premium leather seating, also includes ample cargo room, offering 33.3 cubic feet, with the possibility of expanding to 72 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.

The 2014 XC70’s unique design caters to passengers of all sizes, offering legroom for the short, tall and lanky. With a 40/20/40-split-folding, the vehicle is flexible for any combination of provisions, pets and people. Recognizing the active lifestyle of those who are intended to be travelling in a 2014 Volvo XC70, the manufacturers have lowered the overall height of the vehicle. This modification is made to allow bikers, kayakers and other outdoor adventurers, who frequently load gear onto their rooftop racks, to have greater ease getting stuff up and down. This very wagon-like characteristic instantly separates the 2014 Volvo XC70 from the standard SUVs such as the Honda Pilot, which offers plenty of room, but also takes up a lot of space.

Comfort and spaciousness are not the only two descriptions for the 2014 Volvo XC70’s interior. The vehicle also offers passengers a smooth and silent ride, with handling and fuel efficiency that veers more in the direction of a regular family sedan than a standard sport-utility vehicle.

On the outside, the 2014 Volvo XC70 shows off the sleek-wagon look that incorporates key European design. With a raised suspension of 8.3 inches off the ground and a wider grill, the Swedish inspired earth-toned vehicle is bolder and perhaps a bit bulkier-looking than other crossover wagons of its type, such as the Acura RDX, which doesn’t have some of the “fatty” external features the 2014 Volvo XC70 has.

Where the 2014 Volvo XC70 lacks in objective panache, it gains back in versatility. The basic model comes equipped with a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine that is able to generate 240 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, in addition to the option of front- or all-wheel-drive. The 17-inch alloy wheels, with front and rear skid plates, can take passengers on an off-road tour, a snowy winter excursion or even through a congested back road.

The 2014 Volvo XC70 is far from impressive when it comes to acceleration, but it is still fully capable of performing at an unobjectionable level. The upgraded T6 model was able to reach 97 km/h in 6.1 seconds, an average for luxury wagons with a revised transmission. It’s an understandable pass, since it makes up for that with its responsiveness and reassurance, which includes a road-sign-reading system that can warn drivers when they are exceeding the speed limit. It’s a compromise of sportiness for elegance.

While the vehicle has a substantial list of safety features, including antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control and anti-whiplash front head restraints. It has also shown that it has a slightly longer braking distance than the average vehicle, which is 10 feet longer in the T6 model. The increased suspension introduces a problem in terms of handling turns. Definitely worth taken caution, even though it offers front-seat and side-curtain airbags.

The 2014 Volvo XC70 earns praise from its comfortable design and the refined interior design. Though its lackluster dashboard audio buttons are substantially smaller than wanted and the navigation system’s graphics and functionality are behind its competitors in terms of visual appeal and usability. Where it truly loses some grades is in its affordability and mediocre economy, with the EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers being 27km/h in the city and 37km/h on the highway. There is plenty of room to improve.

When it comes down to it, there are many other viable options on the market, including the affordable Subaru Outback—which is almost half the cost—that is if luxury and optimal comfort are not a factor.

Power and Performance:

Volvo offers the 2014 XC70 with three different powertrain possibilities: There's a base model, with a 240-horsepower 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the T6 model comes only with AWD and a 3.0-liter, 300 hp turbo six. No matter which model, you get a (sometimes hesitant) six-speed automatic transmission, and in all-wheel-drive versions the sophisticated Haldex system sends 95 percent of power to the front wheels under normal driving duties, or up to 65 percent of torque to the rear wheels when needed--making it a good pick for snowy driveways.

The T6 model, as you might assume, is quicker than the base model, but because of its much lower price, as well as a lighter, more nimble driving feel, we do tend to like the non-turbo XC70. The non-turbo engine with front-wheel drive only is quite a bit better on gas, too, with EPA ratings of 12.38 L/100km city, 9.41 L/100km highway. All-wheel drive knocks that up to 13.1 L/100km city, 9.8 L/100km highway with the base engine, and the turbo takes a few more off each rating, at 13.84 city, 10.2 highway. Especially with the available automatic damping control, ride quality is superb, with a softer, absorbent setting for more driving conditions and a sportier one when you need it.

Interiors and Special Features:

Inside, the 2014 Volvo XC70 displays the elegant simplicity that has become the hallmark of modern Swedish design. The look is especially rich with the available leather upholstery and genuine walnut trim. The thin "floating" design of the center stack adds a distinctive touch you won't find on competitive models. For the most part, the gauges are easy to read and controls operate intuitively, though the array of small audio buttons looks somewhat dated. The interface for the available navigation system feels a few years behind rivals' systems in both its graphics and day-to-day functionality.

The XC70's front seats are remarkably comfortable and supportive. The rear seats are nearly as good, though tall passengers will likely wish for a bit more legroom. Practically speaking, the backseat's 40/20/40-split-folding design along with the new folding front passenger seat gives the interior an uncommon degree of flexibility in transporting passengers, cargo or some combination of the two. You'll find 33.3 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and it expands to 72 cubic feet with those seats folded down. Another benefit of the XC70's lower overall height is that it makes loading bikes, kayaks and other gear on rooftop racks much easier than on taller SUVs.

Safety features:

The 2014 XC70 features standard stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, six airbags and a number of optional safety technologies.

The Technology package tacks on adaptive cruise control, a collision-mitigation system with automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection (also with automatic braking), a driver drowsiness monitor, a lane-departure warning system and automatic high beams.

Neither the government nor the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash-tested the XC70 in recent years.
