Quick Look

The 2014 FIAT 500L is a fine alternative to the regular 500, being significantly larger in size without losing the “cuteness” factor in its design. So, those who have grown fond of the 500’s exterior look, but not so fond of its size, will find much to like here. Another great highlight of this small minivan is its 1.4-litre engine turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which can produce 160 horsepower, while offering superb fuel economy.

Full Review

The 2014 FIAT 500L sure is one distinctive vehicle that in spite of its name has very little relation to the 500 hatchbacks. The addition of the “L” suggests that the differences are minimal, but that’s not true at all. The 500L is basically the bigger and fatter version of the 500, much like the Countryman is the bigger and fatter version of the MINI Cooper. It’s a small minivan – akin to the Kia Rondo and Mazda5.

So, when you put the 500L next to the 500, it’s clearly a bigger vehicle. It’s still a cute car in spite of its size. For instance, the 500L still has those adorable “roundish” headlights, a thin front grille with a red “FIAT” badge and a roof that seems detached from the main body. And since the regular 500L is more feminine as far as appearance is concerned, you can beef it up a little to make it slightly more masculine. This means getting meatier front and back additions along with larger 17-inch wheels.

On the inside, the biggest difference between the 500 and 500L is the fact that the L version actually has a very serviceable back bench. The regular 500 has two back seats, sure, but they are so tight that they might’ve as well been non-existent. The 500L’s back bench on the other hand was designed to seat three passengers. Realistically, you can fit only two adults, but that’s still miles better than what you get with the original 500. The back legroom is particularly impressive, being 36.7 inches big, and headroom is very good too. You can also recline, flip and slide the back seats to make the passengers more comfortable or increase cargo capacity.

In terms of features, you get air conditioning, cruise control and Uconnect telematics, which come with a five-inch touchscreen display. Other features include Bluetooth streaming audio and a six-speaker AM/FM/CD player with various inputs. Optional features involve leather seating, dual-pane sunroof, power front seats, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, HomeLink universal garage door opener and Beats Audio system, which comes with six premium speakers and a subwoofer.

Under the hood, the 2014 500L offers only one engine – 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. This small and fuel-economic engine power the front wheels and can be combined with either a six-speed manual or six-speed Euro Twin Clutch. The latter basically operates like an automatic, but with a far greater efficiency. You can also get a six-speed automatic transmission, if you’re not satisfied with the other two.

So, overall, the 2014 FIAT 500L is a decent enough car that combines size and cuteness to an effective degree. So, if you liked the 500, but weren’t too pleased with its size, then the 500L is a fantastic alternative.

Interiors and Special Features:

Here is where the biggest difference lies between the Fiat 500L and its 500 sibling. Technically, the latter has four seats, but the two rear ones are very tight. The 500L, though, has a 3-person rear bench that can comfortably fit two adults. Rear legroom is impressive at 36.7 inches, nearly three inches more than a Mini Cooper Countryman. What's more, the 500L's rear seats recline, slide, flip and tumble forward for cargo/passenger versatility. Headroom in all seats is sky-high. Outward visibility is good thanks to design elements such as a front pillar split by glass and wraparound rear windows. Dash controls are easy to discern and use.

All 2014 Fiat 500L models come standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag and active head restraints for front-seat occupants.

The 2014 500L also comes standard with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control and a tire-pressure monitoring system. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are also available as part of the no-cost Premier package offered on the 2014 500L Easy, Trekking and Lounge models.
