Quick Look

The 2014 Dodge Charger offers a fine selection of powertrains, while being cloaked in one of the most appealing body designs in this segment. The most surprising aspect of this sedan, however, is its well-designed cabin that provides everything a driver and their passengers need to survive on long and short trips. There’s nothing to dislike about this car.

Full Review

The 2014 Dodge Charger offers the proportions of a family sedan, but with such aggressive body design and impressive powertrains, you wouldn’t even know it. It boasts excellency in just about every attribute, delivering a fine and spacious cabin and plenty of engines to choose from. You can never go wrong a Charger, which means that its rivals, like the Chevrolet Impala and Ford Taurus, still have quite a fight ahead of them.

One of the biggest perks of the new Dodge Charger is its exterior design, which it shamelessly borrows from the two-door Charger of the 1960s. The front is as aggressive and iconic as ever, with deep sculpting on the sides and full-width taillights, which have 164 LEDs in them. As wheels, you get a choice of either 17- or 20-inch alloys. If you’re looking to show off, then this look will fit you perfectly.

The inside of this car looks even more impressive than the outside, which we didn’t think was possible. With high-quality materials, soft-touch surfaces, appealing colours and functional instruments, everything here displays luxury and comfort. The front seats are properly bolstered, while the thick-rimmed steering wheel offers an excellent grip. The back seats are impressive too, being able to house two adults comfortably – though the somewhat sloping roofline might leave less headroom for taller people. Some of the features include touchscreen navigation and very imposing sound systems, so get ready to be blown away!

Speaking of being blown away, take a look under the 2014 Charger’s hood and you’ll find one of Dodge’s four fine engines, two of which are V6s and the other two are V8s. The 3.6-litre V6 will give you 292 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the other 3.6-litre V6 can generate 300 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. But, if you’re looking for more power, then the V8s are the answer. The 5.7-litre variant will give you 370 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.4-litre version offers 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The latter is clearly a choice for enthusiasts, which is why we recommend it the most. After all, the Dodge Charger is an enthusiast car to begin with.

However, regardless of which engine you choose, the car will feel small since its steering is so precise and responsive that you’ll forget that you’re driving a sedan. That said, if you go for the all-wheel-drive system, you might lose that feeling somewhat, but that shouldn’t be a big deal.

So, is the 2014 Dodge Charger a worthy purchase? Absolutely! Bu only if you’re looking for a car that isn’t afraid to show off and flex its muscles. If you’re shy or you’re simply looking for an affordable yet practical vehicle, then stay away. Everyone else, definitely take this one for a ride at least once – you’ll love it!

Power and Performance:

With hydraulic power steering--run by a electric-operated pump--the Charger has a confident, nicely weighted tiller, with a feel that just about matches the somewhat beefy feel of all the controls. The suspension improvements introduced last year, with upgraded shocks, control arms and bushings, do improve body control and responsiveness, though they don't bring any more road feel to the steering wheel.

In general, the Charger drives like a somewhat smaller car--although if you opt for the available all-wheel-drive system, the steering doesn't wind and unwind with the same neatness, and that alone can give the car a bulkier feel.

The only Charger we might avoid from a performance perspective is the base SE, but only because it comes with a five-speed automatic while the eight-speed automatic that's included in SXT models is so much better. Otherwise, it's now simply a matter of whether you're okay with the V-8's extra price and thirst (and, perhaps, its less responsible image).

Chrysler's new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, making 292 horsepower, is what powers base Charger models, and it's made better through a very smooth and responsive eight-speed ZF automatic that provides a wide span of ratios. Paddle shifters are included, and the combination gets up to 31 mpg highway.

Even though the V-6 is much more enjoyable this year, the V-8s remain the stars of the lineup. Not many sensory perceptions can equal the throb of a massive V-8 in full mating call, and the HEMI V-8 is the equal of Ford's Mustang V-8 for its lascivious racket. The 5.7-liter belts out 370 horsepower to an appropriately bellowy tune, and it can get to 60 mph in the 5.5-second range. The huge HEMI is a very forgiving engine, and it actually pairs well with the five-speed automatic, which includes a manual-shift mode.

If you want more engagement, a lot more torque, and a classic burble, while for the most engaging, tire-scorching performance you should head straight for the SRT; with its 6.4-liter HEMI V-8, with 475 horsepower and a five-speed automatic, it's good for 0-60 mph times of under five seconds and tuned, in some ways, we think, to sound like a classic big-block engine.

Interiors and Special Features:

A glance at the modest window sticker will not prepare you for the niceness of the interior. There are soft-touch surfaces, quality materials, attractive colors, appealing instrumentation, and it's all done with an appreciable level of fit and finish. The well-bolstered front seats and thick-rimmed steering wheel hold you in place and give a nice place to hold on, and the back seat is just fine for two adults, although the sloping roofline might cut headroom for taller folks. Several well-thought-out options include touch-screen navigation and worthwhile sound systems.

Safety features:

Standard safety features for the Charger include stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side airbags, a driver-side knee airbag, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Optional features include a rearview camera, a blind-spot warning system, a rear cross-traffic warning system and a forward collision warning system that comes bundled with adaptive cruise control.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Charger SXT with 20-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in 113 feet, a remarkably short distance for a large sedan. An R/T was essentially the same, while the SRT8 with higher-grip summer performance tires (an upgrade over the all-season tires on the others) managed an even shorter 108 feet.

In government crash testing, the 2014 Dodge Charger received a top five-star rating for overall protection, including four stars for frontal impacts and five stars for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Charger its highest rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength crash tests.
