The Dodge Dart is now in its second year of production and has zipped its way into the heart of Canadian drivers everywhere. This handsome little car is comfortable and spacious, replacing the Dodge Caliber in the Dodge lineup. It has good handling and distinct sporty styling that’ll definitely get you noticed. The 2014 Dodge Dart is a great car to consider if you’re looking for a delightful car to drive around.

The first thing that has to get mentioned about the 2014 Dodge Dart is the interior. Everything feels well made and has that soft touch to it almost all over the car. The leather and nice stitching also add a high-class feel to the car, making it feel like you’re in a luxury sports car. There’s minimal plastic detailing in the car so it doesn’t look cheap.

The steering wheel is beautifully wrapped in leather and feels great on your hands. The good thing about the Dodge Dart is that they haven’t fallen into the pit of putting too many buttons on the steering wheel. You have sufficient buttons to control your entertainment system and they are very intuitive and easy to read. The one thing we found strange though was the buttons on the back on the steering wheel which we had no idea what they were for.

The instrument cluster is a great mix of digital and analog readers. The speedometer and fuel gauge are analog while in the middle you have a wonderful LED screen that’s highly customizable to your preferences. The Ford Flex has a similar display that is slightly better designed only because the LED in the 2014 Dart just seems too big for the space its featured in.

In the middle you have an 8.4-inch touchscreen LCD is big and brilliant. Some users claimed that it’s too distracting but, realistically, when you’re driving 100 km/h on the highway its better to have a nice big display with easy to read icons than small dinky ones you can barely read. This interface controls everything in the car, from climate control to entertainment and hands-free phone connectivity. It’s truly a brilliant system.

The base 2.0-litre engine in the 2014 Dodge Dart gets you 160-horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, a little bit low to fuel such a heavy car considering that the car itself weighs more than most vehicles in its class. Upgrade to the 1.4-litre MultiAir engine and your horsepower stays the same but torque shoots up to 184 pound-feet of torque. This engine makes a considerable difference and really gets the 2014 Dart moving. The third engine is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that gets 184-horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque, its definitely the funnest to drive with out of the three and loves to get revved.

Fuel economy is rather disappointing for the 2014 Dodge Dart. The 2.0-litre engine gets 9.4 L/100km city driving and 6.5 L/100km on the highway. The 1.4L gets 8.4/5.74, and the 2.4L 10.2/6.72.

The 2014 Dodge Dart is a great car to get around the city in. For great styling and handling, look no further, the Dart is here.

Power and Performance:

The standard 160-horsepower 2.0-liter four is simply underpowered in this heavy compact, and its 'TigerShark' name is a bit misleading. It puts out 148 lb-ft of torque, it fall flat of expectations in this car that weighs about 3,300 pounds—considerably more than some of its rivals. In more demanding driving, whether it's quick acceleration from a stoplight or merging into fast-flowing freeway traffic from uphill ramps, the 2.0-liter Dart feels significantly slower than most competitors.

The optional turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir engine puts out the same 160 hp, but 184 lb-ft of torque, and is considerably more entertaining to drive. The catch is that this engine also feels sluggish below 2,500 rpm; you'd better enjoy driving like an Italian, which is to say keeping your foot in the engine and routinely revving it from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm, because that's where the power is. (Yes, gas mileage suffers as a result).

There's a third engine option that might be the sweetest, although we still haven't driven any Dart with it: The 184-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder is now standard in SXT, Limited and GT models.

Across the board, you can pair these with a Fiat-sourced six-speed manual gearbox. The non-turbo engines can also be ordered with a six-speed automatic transmission (provided, surprisingly, by Hyundai), while you can get the 1.4 turbo with a six-speed dual-clutch (automatic) gearbox as well.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Dodge Dart features one of the nicer cabins in its class, and it only gets nicer as you move up the trim level ladder. Whereas competitors just add leather upholstery or some fake metal trim to improve the ambience, the Dart actually slathers on extra padded surfaces, dash stitching and flares of colorful trim.

We highly recommend springing for the available 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface, which you can get with or without a navigation system. It features straightforward menus, large on-screen buttons and an accompanying knob that makes whipping through iPod menus a breeze. Processing times are quick, too, and if you need to enter a destination on the move, the voice control works surprisingly well. In Darts without this interface, the standard stereo head unit clumsily plugs into the same spot, reinforcing the notion that you missed out on something better.

There's good space for occupants up front, but the Dart's front seats are oddly shaped and feel like they're mounted too high. As a result, longer-legged drivers may find they can't lower the seat-bottom cushion enough for optimum comfort. In addition, the steering wheel has a limited range of tilt adjustment, so you may find you can't position that low enough either.

Meanwhile, the backseat offers plenty of legroom for adults, though 6-footers may run short on headroom. Trunk capacity is 13.1 cubic feet, an average number in this class. Although the trunk holds a decent amount of gear, the hinges on its lid are unusually weak, making it all too easy to close the trunk accidentally when loading bulky or heavy items. Sharp metal protrusions from the trunk's top deck (you can scrape your hands on them when loading up a lot of luggage) are another annoyance.

Safety features:

Every 2014 Dodge Dart comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. A rearview camera is available on most trims. The optional Technology package on the GT and Limited includes rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

In government crash testing, the Dart earned the highest possible rating of five stars for overall crash protection and in the frontal- and side-impact protection categories. It also received five stars in the Overall crash test rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Dart a top score of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests. In the small-overlap frontal-offset test, the Dart earned an "Acceptable" rating (second-highest on a scale of four). Its seat/head restraint design was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Dart Limited came to a stop from 60 mph in 118 feet, putting it among the best in the segment. A Dart Aero equipped with low-rolling-resistance tires, however, stopped from 60 mph in 134 feet, a longer-than-average stopping distance for this class.
