Quick Look

The 2016 Buick Encore, though minimally upgraded from the previous year, is definitely a worthy contender in the competition among subcompact SUVs. With a comfortable interior and sharp creases across the body’s front exterior, this vehicle adds slight improvements in terms of style and allure. However, its prestige is derived from numerous additions to the Encore’s technical capabilities, such as the 7-inch Buick Intellink infotainment system and a new Bose seven-speaker audio system, both sure to please the new generation of family drivers. This midsize crossover is definitely geared towards household driving and supports a multitude of functions that make everyday chores easier.

Full Review

The 2016 Buick Encore is sufficiently stylish and as feature-packed as it’s ever been, which means that it’s one of the most affordable subcompact SUVs in this price range. The only issue that some might have is the mediocre engine for such a heavy vehicle, which may feel as if it’s working overtime in propelling your family across destinations. Nonetheless, this midsize crossover is loaded with enhanced technical features and safety provisions that undoubtedly suit the new generation of technologically reliable, household driving.

On the outside, the 2016 Encore has definitely been upgraded from the previous model’s bulky Buick grille, now holding a redesigned grille that compliments the front end of the midsize crossover with sleek style. Further to this enhancement are new headlights, a sporty, more capable roof and LED lights for maximum visibility. Though exterior changes are minimal, these improvements were much needed and will please drivers desiring a refreshed, better-looking family SUV.

Maintaining the Buick’s classic interior profile, the sturdy Encore exhibits an upscale feel with attractive simulated wood, metal accents and soft-touch materials to make both driver and passengers not only feel comfortable, but safe as well. The centre console conveniently places gauges and controls in a way that feels user-friendly, and further holds the intuitive Buick Intellink infotainment and navigational system on a 7-inch touchscreen display.

Minimally updated from last year’s solid interior profile, the 2016 Buick Encore is rather lacklustre, but it for that compensates with an array of features that are sure to please tech-enthusiasts. The updated midsize crossover now includes a rearview camera, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, heated steering wheel and a fantastic Bose seven-speaker audio system. With all these goodies, uninspired upgrades to the vehicle’s exterior and interior profiles might be overlooked for the sake of pure gadget enjoyment. The new Encore also features several driver assistance options such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning and lane departure warning. These technical features will definitely please drivers valuing safety and comfort.

In terms of performance, the new Buick holds a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. With standard four-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission, this vehicle is rated at 11.3 litres per 100 kilometres city and 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres highway. The subcompact SUV is fairly heavy and not very fuel-efficient, but the vehicle drives surprisingly well under almost every circumstance from potholes to steel plates, and ultimately manoeuvres well thanks to electric power steering. Despite feeling as if you are towing a heavy cab with a relatively weak engine, the 2016 Buick Encore retains superb handling and holds the road better than most short vehicles.

All in all, the 2016 Buick Encore is a great family SUV for people who place importance on comfort, technological capabilities and driver assistance. This vehicle definitely makes up for the lack of power with features that make everyday driving just a bit easier.
