Quick Look

The 2015 Infiniti QX80 delivers several neat updates when it comes to design, interior comfort and technologies, but for the most part, it is the same full-size SUV as the 2014 model. It’s clear Nissan has spent most of its time improving the cabin since even the standard model comes with plenty of amenities, including a hard drive for maps and music, USB connectivity, leather trim and more.

Full Review

Though it may seem like the Infiniti QX80 is only entering its second year, it’s actually been around much longer than that. Prior to 2014, this full-size SUV was known as the QX56, which virtually the same vehicle as this one. The 2015 model isn’t a complete revamp of last year’s model, but it does get a few updates when it comes to styling, interior comfort and technology features. In other words, it still appeals to a somewhat niche market due to its luxurious nature, so if you need a big SUV, but not the luxury therein, then consider a different vehicle.

In terms of exterior design, the 2015 QX80 takes several cues from traditional SUVs of the past, combining them with truck-like details of the current SUVs. As such, you will find the huge headlights and massive grille from the 2014 iteration. Some of the changes for this year include new detailing on the headlamps, turn signals and fog lamps. The vehicle still has those “fake” chromed vents since only one of them actually transfers cool air under the hood. You also get new bumper design with flush sonar sensors and chrome plating for side-mirror housings. Technically speaking, the QX80 is a reimagining of the Nissan Patrol, borrowing its upright stance, height ride, D-pillar angles, raised panels on the tailgates and slightly swelled fenders from that vehicle.

On the inside, the QX80 is both radiant and refined, reminding us quite a bit of the Mercedes-Benz GL and new Escalade. It can fit seven people, while featuring plenty of technology and distinctive materials – especially if you get the Limited model. It gets a Truffle Brown cabin with the option for brown, black or silver leather and plenty of wooden surfaces. All three seating rows are plush and comfortable, particularly at the front, where you can get luxurious sports seats with power adjustments and lots of space. The third row will probably be useless for most adults, so don’t even think of using those. Instead, we recommend power-folding this row down to open up 95.1 cubic feet of cargo space.

The standard features include navigation with a hard drive for maps and audio, DVD and satellite radio, Bluetooth with audio streaming, pushbutton start, USB connectivity for audio players, as well as leather trim. The available Technology Package delivers blind-spot monitors with adaptive headlights and a three-zone automatic climate control system. The Theater Package offers dual LCD displays for the rear seat, wireless headphones and auxiliary input for gaming devices. Finally, the Deluxe Technology Package serves up a Plasmacluster air purifier and grape polyphenol filter – as an addition to the Advanced Climate Control System.

Under the hood, the 2015 QX80 has a 5.6-litre V8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque – connected to a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission. The impressive amount of torque allows this vehicle to up to 8,500 pounds. All-wheel drive is the only option this year, with the torque catering to the rear wheels more – though it’s possible to split it 50:50 between the axles.

Overall, the 2015 Infiniti QX80 is a grand SUV that, for the most part, gets everything right. We do hate how cramped the third seating row can get, but if you treat it more as a two-row vehicle, you will be rewarded with plenty of cargo space.

Power and Performance:

All 2015 QX80s come with a 5.6-liter V-8 delivering 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, with drive going to either the rear wheels or all four via a seven-speed automatic transmission. The engine’s numbers might not seem high, but it’s enough to tow up to 8,500 pounds and provide adequate performance for this big and burly three-row SUV. This big ute can hit 60 mph in a surprisingly quick seven seconds, while gas mileage is no surprise -- a low 14/20 mpg.

Push the start button, and the QX rumbles to life. The V-8 is one shared with the Nissan Titan and Armada–under the hood, but the QX's exhaust sounds more lush and refined than NASCAR race-ready. It's a strong, silent type of powertrain.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior sees the same obsessive attention to detail with a unique Truffle Brown design that also features leathers in brown, black and silver hues. Slabs of wood are also slathered across the cabin.

The leather seats look particularly striking with their silver piping and quilted stitching. If you are big fan of dead cows, you will be delighted to know that Infiniti has also covered the assist handles and the speaker grilles on the instrument panel with tanned hides.

There are zero available options or packages for the QX80 Limited; it comes decked to hilt with everything right out of the factory.

If you are obsessed with details, you will be delighted to hear about the complete list of technology and convenience features inside the Limited. From a 15-speaker Bose Surround stereo, to tri-zone automatic climate and 8-inch DVD screens, if you can dream it, the QX80 likely has it equipped.

Safety features:

All QX80 models boast dual front, front-side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.

A plethora of optional safety features can be spec'd as part of the technology package. The Lane Departure Warning system uses a small camera mounted behind the windshield to determine when the QX80 is wandering into an adjacent lane and notify the driver. If the driver doesn't react, Lane Departure Prevention can gently bring the vehicle back into the proper lane.
