Quick Look

The 2015 Infiniti QX60 is definitely a midsize crossover as far as dimensions go, yet it still manages to offer three rows of relatively comfortable seats. While interior comfort is one of the vehicle’s biggest strengths, it also manages to deliver plenty of solid features, along with eye-catching exterior design and all-wheel drive. There’s also an electric version that boasts fuel efficiency ratings of 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway (if equipped with front-wheel drive).

Full Review

The 2015 Infiniti QX60 is yet another iteration of the midsize three-row crossover that was once known as the JX60. It also stands out as the only front-wheel-drive-based vehicle in Infiniti’s current roster. And with a base price of $43,000, it falls right in the middle of the luxury crossover market, going against the Lexus RX and Acura MDX.

As far as exterior design is concerned, the 2015 QX60 is definitely a looker, featuring sexy, rounded edges that stand in sharp contrast to angular, more typical SUVs. If you look at it from the side, you’ll notice that it has a gently-sloping roof that magically doesn’t get in the way of the space inside at all. The most noticeable aspect of the design is the “bowed” window frame that sits right above the back windows. At the front, the QX60 features elongated headlights and an in-your-face grille. At the back, the crossover has a standard power-operated liftgate that makes loading and unloading of groceries and other things much less of a pain.

Inside, the new Infiniti QX60 offers seven seats that are actually very comfortable – no matter where you choose to sit. As such, it easily beats most of its competition since many vehicles in this segment tend to be surprisingly confined. Leather lining, of course, helps, but most of the comfort is achieved through space. Indeed, you can actually fit two fully-grown adults into the available third-row seats. In addition, the second row can be adjusted fore and aft, which makes for a very easy access to the third row. Heck, even if you have a child safety seat attached in the second row, you can still make it to the third row – a near-impossible feat in most three-row luxury crossovers. The front seats are comfortable, as always, with audio, climate and navigation controls being within easy reach as well.

Under the hood, the 2015 QX60 has 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It’s not the weakest engine, but it could definitely use more juice. The engine is connected to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), which allows for plenty of driving maneuvers. Aside from the Standard setting, the QX60 also offers Sport, Snow and Eco modes, along with a manual mode that imitates shifting gears. The hybrid version of the vehicle includes a 2.5-litre supercharged four-cylinder engine that’s connected to a 15-kiloWatt electric motor, with a net power output of 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. It, too, is fitted with a continuously variable transmission. Like the regular version of the QX60, the hybrid model can be equipped with front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). The fuel economy on this one is respectable, but not too different from the likes of the Acura MDX or Audi Q7. In fact, the front-wheel-drive version is rated at only 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. When it comes to towing capacity, the regular version is rated at 5,000 pounds, while the hybrid is at 3,500 pounds.

Overall, the 2015 Infiniti QX60 is a very respectable crossover with a very respectable price, no matter how you slice it. That said, the hybrid version could be more efficient, while the regular model could be more powerful. But, nitpicks aside, the QX60 is so slick and comfortable that it’s still almost impossible to resist. We highly recommend it.

Power and Performance:

The 2015 Infiniti QX60 is meant to haul up to seven people and their stuff in comfort and, when equipped with all-wheel drive, through snowstorms. It's a much nicer vehicle to drive than Infiniti's huge, truck-based QX80, but like most crossovers of this size and no thanks to the standard continuously-variable transmission (CVT), it's just not a driver's car.

The QX60 offers a choice of two powertrains. The standard engine, fitted to the QX60 3.5, is a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 265 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with the latest iteration of Nissan's CVT. This engine provides adequate but not very enthusiastic performance. The 3.5 offers a choice of four different drive modes: Eco, Standard, Sport, and Snow. Eco is best avoided unless you're on long, flat stretches of road, as we find the pedal feel annoying--it pushes back if you try to accelerate too hard. The Sport mode remaps the CVT so its behavior mimics that of a conventional six-speed automatic--at the cost of slightly higher fuel consumption--with defined shift points and a linear relationship between engine speed and road speed. It's nice, but if used all the time would somewhat negate the benefits of a CVT, namely using less fuel. It's best to stick with Standard, unless you're in a slick situation and want to reduce throttle sensitivity and lower the initial torque multiplication of the transmission from a start, which Snow mode helps to do.

Interiors and Special Features:

There's no shortage of SUVs with seating for seven, but unlike some of the more confined competition, the QX60's leather-lined interior is comfortable for all aboard. Adults can actually fit in the pair of 3rd-row seats, and the second row adjusts fore and aft, making it easy to access the third row. You can even enter the rear-most row with a child safety seat attached in the second row, which is nearly impossible in other luxury 3-row SUVs. The front seats are comfortable, and audio, climate and navigation controls are easy to reach and use.
