Quick Look

The 2014 Lincoln MKT may not be everyone’s cup of tea due to its oddball appearance, but it does offer plenty of goodies. Those include an excellent cabin, wide selection of infotainment features and a very impressive 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine in the EcoBoost model. All of these contribute to one very decent seven-passenger SUV – but only for car buyers who like the look.

Full Review

The 2014 Lincoln MKT is a very decent seven-passenger SUV for the most part, offering a fantastic engine, comfortable cabin and a wide array of awesome infotainment features. But – and in this case, there is a “but” – you may not like the look. We’re saying “you” because the exterior design of this beaut is undeniably polarizing, which means that some people like and others don’t. However, if you can past the looks, you’ll find plenty to love here.

But, since outward appearance is a big part of what makes a vehicle likeable, we’re going to have to talk about MKT’s daring design. It’s the SUV’s bulbous body that attracts all the attention – in a negative or positive way – despite the fact that it’s actually based on the same chassis as the boxy Ford Flex. The MKT's most attractive exterior features are up front, where you get a massive and stately split-wing grille. The car’s profile features prominent bulges and a high beltline that rises further aft the back doors. In the back, the MKT's hefty backside seems to go far beyond its 19- or 20-inch wheels. You’ll also find a very convenient power-operated tailgate and a glass roof that drinks in plenty of light. All-in-all, this car isn’t ugly, but you might not like it – that’s all we’re saying here.

Inside, the MKT looks even great as well, even when compared to other premium three-row SUVs. You’ll find everything a vehicle like this should offer, including comfort, luxury and plenty of room. You also get a choice between six- or seven-passenger configurations. In the six-passenger version, you’ll find two chunky captain's chairs in the second row, which replace a three-person bench. For more comfort, you can add heating and cooling functions to those seats, but this is optional. The third-row seats are both power-foldable and spacious enough for adults. But the best seats are at the front, making both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible, while offering a commanding view. Up there, you also get touchscreen telematics system controls for navigation as well as climate and audio functions, all of which are much more user-friendly. The cargo space is reasonable and can be made even more reasonable by folding the rear seats.

Under the hood, the 2014 MKT offers a selection of two V6 engines. One is a naturally aspirated 3.7-litre powertrain, while the other is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter found in the EcoBoost. Both are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. With its 303 horses, the base V6 provides plenty of power to move this hefty SUV, while the EcoBoost engine's 365 horsepower can speed up the vehicle from zero to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds. The base version is available in front-wheel-drive form only, while the EcoBoost offering is all-wheel drive.

In general, the 2014 Lincoln MKT is a good SUV, so you won’t find too many complaints from us. However, contrary to popular belief, looks do matter, and if you’re one of those people who hates the way the MKT looks, then we recommend checking out other premium SUVs on the market. After all – it’s not the only one!

Power and Performance:

The MKT is offered two ways. You can have it with front-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V-6, or in all-wheel-drive form, with a 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6. Neither will leave you wanting for the Sixties-era V-8s of Lincolns past.

Models with the 3.7-liter six used to be the more sedate of the two, but this year they get twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), to raise output to 303 horsepower (35 more hp than last year) and 278 pound-feet. Based on what we've experienced of this engine in other vehicles, like the nearly identical Flex, it feels surprisingly strong through a six-speed automatic.

Boosted, all-wheel-drive MKT models now make 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, via the six-speed automatic. This is the MKT to have; its power delivery is strong, smooth, and refined, with just a touch of pleasantly present engine noise. You can choose your own gears with steering-wheel paddle-shifters, although the automatic transmission tends to grab the right gear quickly and smoothly.

Interiors and Special Features:

The MKT's interior shines even compared with other premium 3-row SUVs. Spacious, luxurious and versatile, it's available in 6- or 7-passenger configurations. In 6-passenger form, two big captain's chairs replace a 3-person bench in the second row. For ultimate coddling, the twin seats can be had with heating and cooling functions. The power-foldable 3rd-row seats, meanwhile, are roomy enough for adults. In front, the comfortable driver and passenger seats afford a commanding view. A touch-screen telematics system controls navigation, climate and audio functions, and its formerly complicated operation has been improved. Cargo space is commendable, and can be further expanded by folding the rear seats.

Safety features:

The 2014 Lincoln MKT comes standard with rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags covering all three rows. Parents will also appreciate the standard MyKey feature that restricts wheelspin, vehicle speed and audio volume for teen drivers. The second-row airbag-fortified seatbelts are available on both models. Sync also offers emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment.

Safety features that are available only on the EcoBoost model include a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alerts, a lane departure warning system with lane keeping assist, and a collision warning and mitigation system with brake support. This system flashes a warning on the windshield when sensors detect slower-moving traffic ahead and then pre-charges the brake system to reduce braking distances for a potential panic stop.

In a simulated panic stop during Edmunds testing, the MKT stopped from 60 mph in an acceptable distance of 127 feet.

In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the MKT earned a top rating of "Good" for its performance in moderate-overlap frontal offset, side-impact and roof-strength testing.
