Competition is fierce in the midsize luxury SUV market. Ford’s player in this field is the 2014 Lincoln MKX, which is based heavily on the more mainstream Ford Edge two-row SUV. How does the 2014 MKX stack up against some heavy competition? Lets find out.

The big seller in the midsize luxury SUV market is the Lexus RX 350, that’s the one to beat. Compared to this vehicle, the 2014 Lincoln MKX drives better, has more responsive handling, and better steering. Still, it doesn’t mean that the Lincoln MKZ is a sporty SUV to drive. As speeds increase, you’ll find that the cornering limits are fairly low and the handling gets mushy. However, emergency handling is secure and predictable.

Now you’d expect a luxury SUV to be quiet inside the cabin and to ride well. The 2014 Lincoln MKX isn’t offensive, but it doesn’t exactly ‘WOW’ you for $50,000 either. The cabin is relatively hushed, although you do get some wind noise around the mirrors and a little bit of tire hiss and road noise comes through. The 2014 MKX does ride well, absorbing any road bumps with good isolation. It’s uneventful on the highway but at lower speeds, some jostling does come through.

The 2014 Lincoln MKX has a smooth and powerful 3.7-litre six-cylinder engine and it provides decent fuel economy for this sized SUV. However, the six-speed automatic transmission doesn’t always shift smoothly, but it does enough to make the ride pleasant.

Driver visibility could be a bit better in the 2014 MKX, the base of the windshield pillar is quite thick and can be a tad obstructive. Also, the back window is rather small and makes for poor rear visibility. We do like the blind spot monitoring system and the backup camera has a nice, big, and clear display.

Getting in and out of the 2014 Lincoln MKX is pretty easy. It has big doors that open wide and the vehicle itself is a comfortable height. Once you’re inside you’ll find a beautifully finished interior, nicely textured materials, and stitching details that run down the dashboard onto the console. There’s even contrasting leather piping on the leather seats. The steering wheel can be adjusted to any position that is comfortable for the driver, but the wide center console cuts into the knee room.

The front seats have good lumbar support, however the bottom cushion is pretty short which reduces thigh support. The rear seat is roomy, although the cushion is a bit low for comfort. The 2014 MKX features the MyLink Touch infotainment system which has nice big and clear icons that make it easy to control. It features satellite radio and satellite navigation, among other great features you can add on at your discretion.

The 2014 Lincoln MKX proves to be a fair purchase for the luxury SUV buyer. Ford definitely does have some things to work on in this SUV, but it still provides great comfort and style for you and your passengers.

Puissance et performance:

The 2014 MKX has some impressive gear under the hood: a 305-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6—yes, that's the same engine as in the Mustang—and a six-speed automatic transmission, allowing 0-60 mph times in around eight seconds.

It's closely related to the Ford Edge, although it's especially quiet here, with acoustic glass and thicker sound insulation. However the MKX is no conservative, floaty Lincoln of the past. The steering is hefty and relatively quick, and overall the MKX handles as if it were a class lighter. This is a vehicle that digs into its share of country roads with gusto.

As for the transmission, there's also a sport mode, and a sport-shift button on the lever, but the MKX's gearbox won't let drivers choose a single gear to access or to hold, and it doesn't have a set of paddles--something the very large MKT crossover has, by the way.

The all-wheel drive system here definitely saps some of that verve—and you'll pay the price in miles per gallon—so we'd recommend passing on it unless you often take on snow or mud.

Front-drive 2014 MKX models land at 12.4/9.06 L/100km, while all-wheel-drive models drop several mpg, to 13.8/10.2 L/100km. Because of that, we'd strongly recommend the front-wheel-drive mode, unless you regularly encounter deep snow or mud.

Caractéristiques spéciales et intérieures:

The 2014 Lincoln MKX has plush, leather-trimmed seating for five and generous standard features, such as heated and cooled front seats. All models come with the MyLincoln Touch interface, which replaces many conventional buttons with a multifunction touch screen. It's modern but a little challenging to operate on the go. The system also uses voice recognition. Aluminum and optional wood trim help lend a luxurious feel to the cabin. In back, more than 32 cubic feet of cargo space lies behind the second-row seats, and that more than doubles with the seats folded.

Climate-controlled front seats (and leather upholstery all around) are among several standard MKX amenities that can be costly options in its competitors. Remote start allows one to turn on the vehicle before even entering it, and four 12-volt power outlets can keep electronic devices juiced. Other features in every 2014 Lincoln MKX include anti-theft alarm, universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, air filtration system, SiriusXM satellite radio (with 6-month subscription) and a media hub with two USB ports, audio/visual input jacks and an SD card reader.

Heated rear seats, navigation system, rearview camera, panoramic moonroof and a THX II-certified sound system with HD Radio are among the numerous extra features available on the 2014 MKX. Other add-ons of note include blind-spot monitoring, a heated steering wheel (highly appreciated in cold climates), rain-sensing wipers, adaptive HID headlights, and a safety system that alerts the driver to approaching cross traffic.

Caractéristiques de sécurité:

Standard safety equipment for the MKX includes antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and rear parking sensors. Also standard is the programmable MyKey system, which allows parents to limit vehicle speed and stereo volume for teen drivers.

A rearview camera and a blind spot monitoring system (with rear cross-traffic alert) are optional, as are a forward collision warning system and automatic brake preparation for frontal collisions (both packaged with adaptive cruise control).

In Edmunds brake testing, an MKX with 20-inch wheels stopped from 60 mph in 133 feet, a longer-than-average result.

In government crash tests, the MKX received an overall rating of four stars out of a possible five. Within that rating, the MKX earned an unusually low three stars for total frontal impact protection and five stars for total side impact protection. It fared better in tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, receiving the highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests. Its seat/head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
