Quick Look

The 2014 Lexus IS F Sedan continues on the market pretty much unchanged from previous years, albeit the other IS variants are getting a beefy redesign. This car has subtle style, but will surprise you in its power and punch.

Full Review

The 2014 Lexus IS F returns to market this year with only a few changes. New this year are LED foglights, a carbon-fibre rear spoiler and upgraded leather upholstery. This entry-level luxury sedan keeps a low design profile, but delivers in regards to performance. While some serious drivers will be upset that there is no option for a manual transmission, the eight-speed automatic does deliver a great driving experience. Owners of this vehicle will not be disappointed with the longevity and quality that Lexus offers, and just a push of the pedal will send any driving enthusiast for a spin of their lives.

The Lexus IS F is a four-door, four-passenger luxury sport sedan, based on the Lexus IS model pre-overhaul — for better or worse. The IS F has a swollen hood and a dropped stance, which allows the 19-inch alloy wheels to fill in the arches. The gaping mesh grille located at the front of the car allows air to flow back to the engine and brakes for cooling. The IS F is available in one well-equipped trim. Standard exterior features 19-inch alloy wheels, summer performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip rear differential, bi-xenon headlights, LED foglights, rain sensing wipers, heated auto-dimming mirrors, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition and a carbon-fibre rear spoiler.

Inside, the IS F has a relatively civilized interior. The two-toned upgraded leather, new this year, is a nice addition. It complements the chunky, perforated grip that has a splash of colour in the form of a red leather highlight trim. The steering wheel comes with an aluminum-brushed paddle shifter, which is a cool feature that escalates driver experience on this sport sedan. Standard features on the interior of this car include dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery (red interior includes black suede-like Alcantara inserts), heated 10-way power front sport seats with memory settings, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, trip computer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a 13-speaker audio system with a six-disc CD changer, satellite radio, iPod integration and auxiliary audio input jack. An upgrade option is a navigation system that includes a seven-inch display, a rearview camera, HD radio and Lexus Enform 2.0 smartphone app integration. Stand-alone upgrade options include a 14-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system (must purchase navigation system), adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors. You can also ditch the sunroof at no cost. The standard sport seats offer good support for aggressive driving, but the front of the cabin lacks head room and leg room for taller drivers making the ride a little uncomfortable. Comfort isn’t greatly improved in the rear seat, which is pretty tight and only ideal for a child or small adult. Trunk space in this car is average for its class.

The main selling feature for the IS F is the drivability of the vehicle. Although it does not offer a six-speed manual transmission, this car is a pleasure for the new and experienced to drive. The engine offers a throaty rumble that will put any performance concerns to rest. The combination of precise steering, responsive Brembo brakes and well-gripping summer tires delivers exceptional handling and in turn driving experience.

Standard safety features on the IS F are antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat airbags, front knee airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Another standard tech safety feature is Safety Connect, which provides automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle recovery and emergency assistance. The optional adaptive cruise control acts as a frontal collision warning system that uses radar to detect a potential collision and will automatically adjust seatbelt tension and braking force, which is another great safety feature.

Under the hood of the Lexus IS F is a 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission with rear wheel-drive is the only option. The EPA-estimated fuel economy of this vehicle is 13 liters per 100 kilometers combined.

Overall, this car is definitely one to consider in the lineup of luxury sport sedans. Although it has a low profile design, the powerful punch that this car delivers makes the 2014 Lexus IS F one to watch for.

Power and Performance:

Lexus reinvented the luxury saloon segment with its V8-powered IS. It’s ridiculous in every sense to the word. The engine is too big, the body too small, and it’s all mish-mashed together to form one big, overcompensatory four-door. But it is so much damn fun. The immediate reaction comes from under the hood. While the styling itself is still tame enough not to draw too much attention, the 416-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 grips both driver and passenger from launch.

Still keeping its rear-wheel drive and 8-speed paddle shift gearbox, the IS F feels composed enough to manage that monstrous V8. It’s not afraid to take on some sharp corners, snarling all the while. MPG isn’t great, to say the least — somewhere near 18, but truth be told, it’s not really about that. It’s about an IS with a V8 and that’s all that matters.

Interiors and Special Features:

Also basically carried over into 2014 is the IS F’s interior, but it did receive a few more updates than the exterior. The 2014 IS F’s interior features a two-tone upholstery design and aluminized composite trimming.

The biggest update to the interior for 2014 is the addition of "F" logos on the headrests. These "F" logos accompany the same ones found on the 2013 model’s steering wheel and rear-center console. The 2014 model also gains Alcantara covering on the door panels and center console cover, black full-aniline leather seats, and black Alcantara inserts with red perforations and black-leather-trimmed headrests on the red leather seating package.

Safety features:

The NHTSA and IIHS have yet to put the IS F to the test, but they did test the 2014 IS 250. The NHTSA gave the 2014 IS 250 an overall five-star rating, with its only flaw being a four-star rating in the frontal crash test.

The IIHS, on the other hand, gave the IS 250/350 a rather low rating, as it received a "Good" rating in the front and side crash tests, but score just "Acceptable " in roof strength and head restraints and seats, and "Poor" in the small overlap rating. These ratings put it at the bottom of the midsize luxury safety list last year.
