Full Review

The 2014 Lexus LS 460 is a luxury sedan that puts importance on a well-detailed cabin and opportunity to spoil drivers above performance and drivability. This vehicle still comes equipped with a great engine, but Lexus cannot compete against BMW and Mercedes in this category. The cabin is a high-quality affair, offering touches of luxury that are a major attraction for buyers in the market. It’s also infamously quiet, cutting out most, if not all road noise. Buying a Lexus will also give drivers a great ownership experience. The LS is a very reliable vehicle and Lexus is known to take good care of their customers. This car is by no means at the top of its class as far as luxury sedans go, but it is comfortable, well-assembled and reasonably priced.

The exterior of the 2014 LS 460 is the most radical-looking design to date. It is a four-door five-passenger luxury sedan. The LS 460 has a sporty body that is highlighted with a bulging hood and a contemporary back-end treatment. Upgraded trim levels will add a sporty look by lowering the vehicle closer to the ground. The LS 460 is available in standard and extended wheelbase (LS 460 L) with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Standard on the 460 and 460 L are 18-inch wheels, adaptive automatic xenon headlights (xenon for low-beam setting), LED foglamps and running lights, auto-dimming and power-folding mirrors, automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a sunroof, power-door closers, keyless entry and ignition. standalone additions include 19-inch wheels, summer tires, LED headlights (low- and high-beam) and adjustable air suspension (which includes enhanced steering, ride height adjustment and additional drive settings). There are various optional packages available on the LS 460. The All Weather package adds headlamp washers and a wiper de-icer (standard on AWD models).  The standard LS can be configured with the F Sport package, which includes 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, a sport-tuned air suspension and sport-tuned steering. The F Sport model also adds unique exterior design elements such as darkened headlamps, a unique front fascia, a blackout grille and chrome body side trim.

The cabin of this vehicle is where the design and luxury really stand out. The interior has a clean and well-arranged dash, attractive interior accent lighting and a large touchscreen for the relatively easy-to-use infotainment system. The cabin offers nice balance between style and functionality. The seats are comfortable and the extended cab adds even more legroom for rear-seat passengers. Design highlights include a bamboo wheel, aluminum interior trim and five unique interior themes. The L wheelbase can also be configured for four passengers and a rear-center console.  Standard in the interior of the LS 460 and LS 460 L are a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats (a 12-way driver seat with four-way lumbar and a 10-way passenger seat with two-way lumbar), front-seat memory functions, leather upholstery, a power tilt-and-telescoping wood and leather steering wheel and a folding rear seat. Standard technology includes the Lexus Remote Touch interface, a 12.3-inch display screen, a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and Lexus Safety Connect. The standard 10-speaker sound system includes a CD player, HD radio, iTunes tagging, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and iPod/USB audio interface.

Stand-alone interior upgrades include a blind-spot warning system with rear cross traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control with an enhanced pre-collision system that has a driver attention monitor and a forward collision avoidance system, upgraded leather upholstery (includes simulated suede headliner), a heated wood steering wheel, a wood and leather-padded steering wheel and a 19-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system.

The Ultra Luxury package adds four-zone climate control, six-way power rear seats (with heating, cooling and massage functions), rear-seat side airbags and rear audio controls. The Comfort package (standard on the LS 460 L) adds power-closing trunk, heated and ventilated front seats and a power sunshade. The F Sport package includes sharper adjustable drive settings and a transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel, rev-matched downshifts and unique interior design elements. The LS 460 L can be equipped with the Executive-Class seating package, which adds extended leather trim, a power passenger-side ottoman, power rear side sunshades and a rear-seat DVD/Blu-ray entertainment system with a power dropdown screen.

The primary selling feature of this vehicle is the very luxurious interior that the LS 460 offers. It has a beautiful harmony of detailed design and functionality. The top-notch materials will not be overlooked by those in the market. The Lexus Remote Touch system is also a great quality of the LS 460. The infotainment system is displayed on a large 12.3-inch screen. It has navigations, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, Lexus Safety Connect emergency communications, the Lexus Enform suite of smart-phone-integrated apps and the Siri Eyes Free interface (which provides additional voice control functionality for newer iPhones). This system is good in hindsight, but can be difficult to use and at times distracting. The cabin is extremely comfortable in the upfront bucket seats and only gets better moving into the back end of the high-end trims with adjustable options and massage functions. Standard safety features in the LS 460 include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front knee airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Technology improves safety through the Lexus Safety Connect, which has automatic collision notification, an emergency assist button, enhanced roadside assistance and a stolen vehicle locator. Upgradable interior options will also improve the safety features on the sedan.

Powering the LS 460 is a 4.6-liter V8 engine that produces 386 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque in a standard rear-wheel-drive configuration. The models equipped with all-wheel drive will see a drop to 360 horsepower and 347 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on every LS 460. The combined fuel economy ratings are 12.38 liters per 100 kilometers in the rear-wheel-drive version and 13.07 liters per 100 kilometers in the all-wheel-drive offering.

Overall, the 2014 Lexus LS 460 is not bad at all for a luxury sedan. The interior is impeccable, but drivability is lacking. If your comfort in the vehicle is more important than power, then the LS 460 is the car to look for.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Lexus LS 460 is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine that produces 386 hp and 367 pound-feet of torque in the standard rear-wheel-drive configuration. Those power figures drop to 360 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque on models equipped with all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on every LS 460.

In Edmunds testing, a rear-drive LS 460 went from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, which is slower than average for a high-end luxury sedan with a V8 engine. The EPA's estimated fuel economy for all rear-drive LS 460 sedans is 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city/24 mpg highway); AWD versions rate 18 combined (16/23).

Interiors and Special Features:

As befits a top-end luxury sedan, the interior of the Lexus LS 460 features outstanding materials, including soft leather and high-quality vinyl, and padded surfaces are joined with elegant contrast stitching. Wood trim is artfully applied, mixing with metallic surfaces and chrome details for a modern, albeit understated atmosphere.

The Lexus Remote Touch electronics interface controls most cabin functions. It's a mouselike device that allows the user to navigate among a variety of function icons on a horizontally oriented, 12.3-inch display at the top of the dashboard. However useful Remote Touch is for integrating basic tasks and smartphone applications, it ultimately draws too much attention away from the road. Cursor control with the Remote Touch controller is wobbly and imprecise, making audio and navigation selections difficult when you're on the move. Other companies use different solutions for their technology interface systems, and in particular, we prefer BMW's iDrive and Mercedes' COMAND. If you're planning to buy an LS 460, Remote Touch should be tested out thoroughly at a dealership.
