Full Review

The 2014 Jaguar XJ returns to market with some additions and deletions that improve the look and functionality of this vehicle. The XJR replaces the Supersport trim, and there is a new engine in the XJL Portfolio model. Subtle refinements, such as soft-door closing, soft-touch dash and door surfaces, enhanced seat massage and optional premium auto system, add luxury to this vehicle. Discontinued from this line are the High-luxury trim level and wood tray tables for the rear-seat passengers. The Jaguar XJ offers a unique eye-catching style with an exquisite high-fashion interior. The driving experience of this vehicle is like sport-sedan and the light-weight aluminum body sets the XJ apart from its competitors. The Jaguar XJ has exclusivity about it, as it is not sold in the same volumes as its competitors, making this vehicle the right choice for a buyer interested in unique luxury.

The exterior of this full-size luxury sedan is very distinctive, highlighted by its imaginative design. The XJ solidifies its presence on the road, taking up substantial mass and despite this, still manages to have a coupe-like look with a sloping roof.  The styling of this car is refreshingly simple, with the grille carved in a shard form and the fenders, on perfect cue, swell as the roof slopes.

The five-passenger vehicle is available in regular (XJ) and extended (XJL) wheelbase variants. The XJ comes in three trim lines: the base, Supercharged and XJR. The XJL has two trim lines: the Portfolio and XJR. Standard in the base XJ are 19-inch wheels, an adaptive and self-leveling suspension, driver-adjustable steering and throttle settings, front and rear parking sensors, automatic wipers, automatic bi-xenon mirrors, auto-dimming mirrors, a power trunk lid and panoramic sunroof. The XJL Portfolio adds a longer wheelbase and the option for Adaptive headlights and automatic high-beam control. The XJ Supercharged adds tauter suspension tuning, 20-inch wheels with performance tires, adaptive headlights and automatic high-beams. This trim is also available with the extended wheelbase. A Sport and Speed package will upgrade to exclusive exterior.  The new XJR comes in both regular and extended wheelbases and has 20-inch tires, XJR-specific suspension tuning, quad-tip exhaust and all the contents of the Sport and Speed package.

The cabin of the Jaguar XJ offers clean and elegant design thanks to its minimal centre-stack controls. It is this exquisite design that sets the XJ apart from the competition. The materials used are some of the best found in any similarly-priced vehicle. Soft leather covers the seating surfaces, upper dash and door panels, allowing the XJ to really blend old-world luxury with contemporary aesthetics. Standard features in the XJ base model include a rearview camera, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated eight-way power front seats (with four-way power lumbar), driver seat memory settings, a power tilt-and-telescoping heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. The multimedia features are displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen equipped with a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, voice controls. The is also a 14-speaker Meridian audio system with a CD player, satellite radio, HD radio, digital music storage and a USB connection.

The Portfolio trim will add heated and ventilated 16-wa power front seats with a massage function, passenger seat memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control for the rear seats as well as heated and ventilated rear seats. This package will also open up more colour choices for the interior trim and simulated suede headliner and additional leather surfacing. The XJL portfolio will add extra rear seat space, vanity mirrors and manual rear sunshades. An optional package will add seat massage, additional leather-covered surfaces and a 20-speaker Meridian surround-sound audio system. Stand-alone upgrades include adaptive cruise control with forward collision alert and brake assist. A 26-speaker Meridian sound system is available for the Portfolio and Supercharged trims.

The main selling features of this vehicle are the unique, exclusive design and the fact that the XJ will give luxury car buyers more bang for their buck. The top-of-the-line packages offer top-level luxury at a rate that competitors cannot match. The interior of this vehicle is very nice and offers a crisp design without an overly-cluttered dash area. Where the XJ excels is in design, though unfortunately it falls a bit behind its German competitors when it comes to the quality of construction.  The tech aspects of the Jaguar XJ are also a little less advanced and less functional than their German counterparts. While the laptop-like display screen comes equipped with ambient lighting and controls for sound, navigation and phone. The sloping roofline looks really stylish, but sacrifices headroom at the front and back ends.

Standard safety features on the XJ include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active head restraints and a blind-spot warning system. Upgradable interior options will also increase safety.

Powering the 2014 Jaguar XJ base and XJL models is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that generates 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission is an eight-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel-drive. The fuel economy on the rear-wheel is 11.2 liters per 100 kilometers combined and the AWD gets a combined rating of 12.38 liters per 100 kilometers. The XJ Supercharged model gets you a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 470 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque. The new XJR gets 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque with its higher-performance engine. Both models get a combined rating of 13.07 liters per 100 kilometers.

Overall, the 2014 Jaguar XL has a lot of great qualities that make it both unique and exclusive. Most buyers will feel satisfied with this full-size luxury sedan.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 Jaguar XJ base and XJL Portfolio models feature a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine generating 340 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard; all-wheel drive is optional. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg combined (18 mpg city/27 mpg highway) for the rear-drive model. The AWD model is rated at 19 mpg combined (16 city/24 highway).

Upgrading to the XJ Supercharged model gets you a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with 470 hp and 424 lb-ft of torque, while the new XJR extracts 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque from a higher-performance version of this engine. Both models return an EPA-estimated 15/23/18 mpg.

In Edmunds testing, a Jaguar XJR accelerated from zero to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.

Interiors and Special Features:

Settling into the Jaguar XJ makes you realize just how austere and clinical other luxury sedans have become. The XJ features magnificent natural surfaces, exquisite ambient lighting and some of the best man-made materials found in any vehicle at any price.

Old World luxury meets contemporary aesthetics with digital gauges that display on a laptop-like screen, replicating mechanical indicators in a variety of user-configurable layouts and bathed in soothing ice-blue lighting. The XJ's touchscreen interface commands most of the sound, navigation and phone controls. While its speed and operation has improved over the years, competitors' systems (which are typically manipulated via one large control dial and adjacent menu buttons) are easier and quicker to use and give the driver control over a wider array of vehicle functions.

Although its vast exterior profile suggests otherwise, the XJ's sloping roof line sacrifices both front- and rear-seat headroom for style. In the base models, there's also not as much legroom back there as you'd expect. If you need a roomy backseat, consider the long-wheelbase L models, but bear in mind that no XJ will feel as limo-like as its competitors do. Similarly, the XJ's 15.2-cubic-foot trunk is average in size for the segment, but has a few awkward protrusions that limit your loading options.

Safety features:

Every 2014 Jaguar XJ comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active head restraints and a blind-spot warning system. A forward collision alert system and advanced brake assist (it primes the brakes if an accident is imminent) are included with the optional adaptive cruise control.

In Edmunds brake testing, an XJL with the standard 19-inch wheels and all-season tires stopped from 60 mph in 125 feet, a bit longer than average for this class of car. An XJL Supercharged with summer tires, however, stopped from 60 mph in 106 feet. The similarly equipped XJR did it in 105 feet.
