The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d is one of the finest SUVs on the market, boasting a slick appearance, comfortable cabin and fuel-efficient engine. The car also benefits from the new iDrive system, which is much more intuitive now, featuring a simple touchpad controller along with easy-to-navigate climate and audio functions.

The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d comes with the right kind of improvements over the last year’s model, offering better performance, more cabin comfort and plenty of safety features. On top of that, this SUV is very pleasing to the eye, thanks to its slick and elegant appearance.  In spite of that, the car still possesses excellent off-roading capabilities, so forget about the cliché that only rugged-looking cars are good for that.

From a distance, the 2014 X5 looks just like the X3 model, but upon closer inspection, you can tell that it’s a different car. Thanks to its new design, the X5 is noticeably skinnier and far more graceful than the X3, despite being the same size dimensionally. At the front, you’ll find the good old BMW kidney grille that’s now seamlessly attached to the headlight housings. The back of the features “Aero Blades” for channeling air in order to improve aerodynamics. It’s the first BMW to include such a function, which is quite significant.  Other features include roof rails and a two-section tailgate.

But a car’s quality is rarely decided upon its looks – which is why you have to look inside to see what it’s like at its heart. Luckily, the 2014 X5 xDrive35d is a vast improvement over the older models in just about every way – as far as interior spaces go. This model allows you to seat five people in its two rows, but you can add two more with the optional third row. The front and second-row seats allow for plenty of leg and headroom, making them comfortable for children and adults. The front seats are especially comfortable thanks to fantastic adjustability and back support. So, even if you have a wide frame, you should fit just fine. That said, the third-row seats are on the tighter side, making them appropriate mainly for kids. The cargo area is not bad though – and when you fold the third- and/or second-row seats you get even more space.

The X5 xDrive35d also comes with BMW’s latest incarnation of the iDrive system, which now is much simpler to use. The reason for that are the more intuitive touchpad controller and easy-to-access climate and audio functions.  Other standard features include AM/FM/CD player with USB port, Bluetooth with audio streaming, Sensatec synthetic-leather upholstery, power front heated seats, parking sensors and power windows, lock and mirrors. But if those are not enough for you, there are plenty of packages and stand-alone features to choose from.

And speaking of features – the safety standards are top-notch here. Those include stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, automatic brake drying, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active head restraints and the BMW Assist emergency communications system that offers stolen vehicle recovery, roadside assistance and crash notification. Optional safety features include a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, collision mitigation system and a top-down camera system.

Under the hood, the X5 xDrive35d comes with a 3.0-litre tubocharged inline-six, which produces 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. This engine is connected to the impressive eight-speed automatic transmission, which gives it the kind of agility few SUVs possess. On top of that, you get very decent fuel economy numbers since the EPA has rated this SUV at 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. These ratings are in fact a notch better than what you’d find in X5 sDrive35i and xDrive35i.

In the end, the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d is an excellent – that more than justifies the price tag of $64,490. Of course, not everyone has that kind of money, but if you do, then definitely take this car for a test drive. You are bound to love it as much as its rivals, such as the Mercedes-Benz ML 350 and Audi Q7.

Power and Performance:

The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d features a diesel-powered 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 that produces 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Official EPA ratings weren't available as of this writing, but BMW is promising 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway, which would mean an approximate 25 or 26 mpg in the combined rating.

Interiors and Special Features:

The latest BMW X5 has seating for five across two rows. A 3rd-row seat is optional and increases the passenger count by two, but room in that last row is very tight. Legroom is good in the first two rows, and the front seats are especially comfortable and spacious, even for adults with large frames. The 2nd-row seats fold in a 40/20/40 configuration, handy for fitting long items like skis down the middle. BMW's latest iDrive with touchpad controller is easier to figure out, and the main controls for climate and audio are fairly intuitive. Poplar wood trim adds warmth to the cabin's sleek lines.

Safety features:

Because the X5 is new, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) haven't had the chance to crash-test it yet. Given the model's good history for safety, we've given it a higher tentative score in anticipation of those ratings. We'll update this page once more information is published.

All X5 utes get their fair share of safety gear, including curtain airbags, stability control, and Bluetooth. A rearview camera is a $400, stand-alone option on all but the V-8 version, however.

Visibility is excellent from behind the wheel of the X5, and with standard parking sensors, it's simple to move very close to garage walls or cars parked in connecting spaces. In addition to those sensors, we'd opt for the rearview camera and for BMW's surround-view cameras, which produce a 360-degree view of surroundings from cameras mounted in the nose and tail and under the side mirror housings. Drivers can toggle between views from the cameras, and place the vehicle perfectly in a tight space--or check for obstacles that can't be seen behind the car's rather high tail. That system is bundled in a package with blind-spot monitors, speed-limit information (rendered on the iDrive screen), lane-departure warning and collision-alert systems; adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability can be added for $1,200 on top of those features.

BMW's Parking Assistant takes the wheel when it's ordered; it can steer the vehicle into parallel spots or perpendicular ones, at the touch of a button. The same underlying technology couples with adaptive cruise control to bring you Traffic Jam Assistant, which maintains following distance all on its own in heavy traffic, and keeps the vehicle at the center of its lane by providing steering input.

Night vision and a head-up display remain on offer; the X5 can be fitted with full LED lighting.

Finally, BMW's assistance plans include basic coverage that heightens its automatic-collision alerts to emergency services, based on the vehicle's position, airbag state and speed before impact. It also provides real-time traffic information.
