The 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i isn’t just a compact crossover – it’s a Sport Activity Vehicle. Aimed at successful and ambitious individuals, it delivers quality in every aspect possible, featuring excellent design and a powerful engine. There are few cars that can rival this one in terms of overall quality.

The 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i is a stylish compact crossover that manages to deliver great performance, excellent fuel economy and great design. BMW wisely avoids calling it a crossover, and instead describes it as an SAV – a Sports Activity Vehicle – because it mixes the joys of driving a crossover with the pleasures of leading an active lifestyle. It’s basically meant for families who want to project success and ambition within their social circles. First and foremost, there are two different versions of the BMW X3 available on the market: the xDrive28i and xDrive35i. This review will cover strictly the 28i, while the 35i will be covered in a different review. The 28i features a 2.0-litre “N20” TwinPower four-cylinder engine, which pumps out 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. In fact, it produces 39 pound-feet more than the 2013 model. But that’s not all – it also offers excellent fuel economy, with the rating of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. So, with such a high power output and fantastic efficiency, the car’s appearance is bound to be phenomenal as well, right? Well, that would depend on your own sensibilities. If you’re looking for Jeep-like ruggedness, you’ll be sorely disappointed here. The new BMW X3 looks much more “feminine” than your typical SUV – it’s lean and elegant, with soft edges and a tall roof. In fact, it’s very similar to the bigger X5, which uses the same effortlessly minimalist approach. To be fair, however, the 2014 BMW X3 isn’t as emasculating as its appearance suggests. For instance, it’s more than capable of going off-road – though not to the same degree as its more outdoorsy brethren. All the xDrive28i models come with an all-wheel drive system that separates power circulation 40/60 per cent. The vehicles are also good at keeping traction and composure on slippery surfaces since it applies 60 per cent of torque to the back wheels in normal mode, but can actually apply 100 per cent to the back. On the inside, the new BMW X3 offers plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. The back seats now also have a ski pass-through and additional space carved out for feet under the front seats. And since this is a tall vehicle, there’s enough headroom for an adult of any height (within realistic boundaries, of course). The front passenger and driver have the additional option of sport seats with extendable thigh bolsters. There are plenty of special features too, including BMW’s iDrive system and dynamic cruise control. In terms of design – the interior is very clean and detailed, just like on the outside, making it very easy on the eyes. Safety features are just as impressive as everything else in this crossover. You get your usual airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability systems. Other features include a Driver Assistance Package and head-up system. Drivers of navigation-and-iDrive-equipped models can also customize the Sport mode for varying levels of stability control. So, if you’re looking to project the image of ambition and success, the 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i is a vehicle you should consider. Don’t be dissuaded by its graceful appearance – because under the hood, it’s got plenty of power to offer, along with a solid amount of fuel economy. In short, the BMW X3 is well worth the price.

The 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i continues to avoid the rugged appearance of the majority of SUVs and crossovers, heading steadfastly into the land of tall sport wagons. Back in 2011, BMW gave the X3 a significant redesign that endowed the car with more length, width and a much more significant physical presence. It basically made the crossover closer in appearance to the larger X5 vehicles. By combining features like its elegant beltline crease, sport-wagon silhouette, elongated nose and carved lines at the front that more or less lower the beltline, BMW achieves something that looks completely opposite of traditionally accepted of SUVs. Add that to functional details like a twin-kidney grille and LED tail lamps, which look like the ones on a 5-Series or 3-Series sedan, and you get a stunning exterior design. Inside, the 2014 BMW X3 looks just as adorable as on the outside. The front panel features dash arcs that envelop the controls and direct them at the driver. Another notable feature is the fact that everything – from the middle of the doors and beyond – is fitted with soft-touch surfaces. This cabin is top-notch on every level.

Power and Performance:The 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i comes with a 2.0-litre “N20” TwinPower four-cylinder engine. It produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, which is roughly 39 pound-feet more than the last year’s engine. According to BMW, it takes the car around six seconds to accelerate to 90 kilometres per hour, and that’s not good. That said, this acceleration rate is not too bad either – it’s just unremarkable, that’s all. The engine also benefits from the eight-speed automatic transmission that can be found on every xDrive28i model. Thanks to its intensifying yet remote shifts, the car has scored the EPA rating of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the highway. This is a very impressive fuel economy rating, especially for a car that can produce this much torque and power. And for those who are worried that the 2014 BMW X3 isn’t “adventurous” enough, don’t worry – it’s more than capable of going off-road. Thanks to BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, which is available for all models, the power delivery gets split 40/60 per cent. As a result, it’s very good at maintaining traction on slippery surfaces. Plus, it’s capable of sending 100 per cent of torque to the back wheels, while in normal driving, it sends up to 60 per cent.
Interiors and Special Features:The 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i has the same kind of elegance and beauty on the inside as it does on the outside. Everything is incredibly detailed and refined, with quality carpeting, well-designed seatback latches and metal cargo rails. But the best part about the interior is that everything from the middle of the doors and beyond is fitted with soft-touch surfaces, featuring quality grains. In terms of space, the xDrive28i offers plenty of it. The overall length of the car is 184 inches, with the width of 74 inches and wheelbase of 110.6 inches. As such, there’s enough legroom and headroom even for the tallest person out there. The front seats are especially spacious, but fortunately that’s not all they have to offer – since they’re also firm and properly angled. The second-row seats provide quite a bit of space too thanks to extra room carved out for feet and their general placement. The models that come with five seats offer quite an expansive back storage area, which is roughly 19 cubic feet large and expands up to 56.6 cubic feet when the back seats are folded. And speaking of back seats, they now also have a ski pass-through and seatback folding. In terms of special features, there’s enough to keep even the pickiest car shoppers happy. All the models comes with a power tailgate, power front seats, automatic climate control, a garage-door opener, fog lamps, rain-sensing wipers, dynamic cruise control, Bluetooth and an audio system with 12 speakers, HD, a USB port and satellite radio. BMW has also updated its iDrive system to version 4.2. It now offers improvements in navigation, voice recognition and menus, while adding a new split-screen layout and 3D city maps.
Safety features:The 2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i offers a very sizeable amount of safety features – and they’re all very impressive. Those include your typical airbags, active front head restraints, anti-lock brakes and stability systems. Owners of the X3 equipped with navigation and iDrive can customize the Sport mode to have differing levels of stability control. This imbues the car with better traction and greater reliability on snowy roads. Other safety options include a head-up system to reduce the level of distraction and a Driver Assistance Package with a rearview camera and Park Distance Control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the crossover with top ratings in all categories, effectively making the car its Top Safety Pick. So, if safety is your concern, then leave it behind you because safety is what you’ll find here.
