About Toyota Canada
Toyota was first introduced in Canada in 1965 with only two models and have since expanded to over 32 models currently. It is headquartered in Toronto (Scarborough) and more than 4 million vehicles have been produced at their manufacturing plants in Cambridge, Ontario and Woodstock, Ontario. The Cambridge and Woodstock manufacturing plants assemble some of Toyota's top selling models, including the Corolla, RAV4, and the Lexus RX 350.
The brand name Toyota was derived from the founder’s last name Toyoda, as Toyota was seen to be more pleasing to the ear and recognizable. Marketing efforts have strategically been directed at the high reliability factor and ease of ownership of Toyota vehicles. The operations management philosophy is strategically aligned with Toyota’s message of quality, as the Toyota Production System (TPS) is very prominent in lean manufacturing. The automaker is also a leader in lean manufacturing, with the invention of concepts such as "Kaizen", the need for improvement, and Just in Time (JIT) manufacturing to reduce waste. The company has constantly been rated top quality by J.D Power, and has also received the Top Safety Pick Awards by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the Yaris Hatchback, Corolla, Camry, Prius, Prius V, Venza, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, and Tundra.
Toyota is a leader in setting new environmental standards as well, being the first to mass produce hybrid vehicles. Toyota released the first all-electric SUV vehicle in 1997 named the RAV4 EV, based on the popular RAV4 model line. The Toyota Prius is another popular hybrid vehicle and is currently the best-selling hybrid vehicle in North America. Other hybrids found in the Toyota line up include the Highlander and Camry. Hybrids are also found in the Lexus line up, including the CT200h, RX 450h, GS450h, and the LS 600h L.
Toyota also introduced new innovations, including an eight-speed automatic transmission found in the Lexus IS-F and an Advanced Parking Guidance System in the Lexus LS460.
