Quick Look

The 2016 Audi SQ5 delivers everything a crossover driver would want – great looks, stellar performance and notable fuel efficiency.

Full Review

The 2016 Audi SQ5 is perfect for drivers who are looking to be elevated above others on the road and still have the luxury of not driving a huge truck. It fits perfectly between the Q7 and Audi’s wagons. With some minor adjustments made to this year’s model, the new Audi SQ5 will go a long way. In addition to the pleasure of an elevated ride, the performance of this model is very smooth and impressive.

The exterior of the compact luxury crossover looks very similar to the previous year’s model. The famous grille Audi uses for many of its larger models is also being used here. The difference between this grille and the grilles the automaker uses with its sedans is that this one has vertical lines as opposed to horizontal. They give the grille a whole new look as it takes up the entire front end of the vehicle. The headlights are placed right beside the grille, which come equipped with LED lighting. This will allows the SQ5 to differentiate itself from other cars, especially at night. The rear end of the vehicle also doesn’t look different from last year’s model. The taillights are powered by LED lighting, while looking similar in shape to the headlights.

The interior upholds the sleek and stylish design used outside. The centre console is very user-friendly as there is nothing drivers will have to squint at to get what they want from it. The materials used for the dashboard and seats are also top-notch, building on the luxurious look. The colours that have been released for the interior are also perfect as they all go hand-in-hand with the design. Audi offers a beautifully-layered oak trim as an option for buyers, endowing the dash with a furniture-like finish. The steering wheel is crafted perfectly for drivers to have a very comfortable drive. The spacious legroom and headroom both to the comfort level of the drive for both the driver and passengers.

Under the hood, Audi uses an upgraded suspension as well as a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine, which is able to produce 354 horsepower. The engine is connected to an eight-speed, paddle-shifted automatic transmission, which sends power to all four wheels. The power on the engine allows the 2016 Audi SQ5 to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in about 5.1 seconds and has a top speed of about 250 kilometres per hour.

The 2016 Audi Q5 is a very dependable vehicle when it comes to performance, safety and even design. The benefits of this car will not only be reaped by the driver, but also the passengers thanks to all that rear space.

Power and Performance:

We're happy with any of the Q5's powerplants, especially the base 2.0-liter turbo four—it's lighter and almost as quick as the Q5 3.0T; the 3.0T has a 272-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 and is plenty of fun. The efficient Q5 Hybrid blends the power from the 2.0-liter four with that of a 54-hp electric motor fed by lithium-ion batteries for 245 hp net. It works well but we would tend to prefer the Q5 TDI, which offers similar acceleration, higher combined fuel economy, and a more natural driving feel. We're also fans of the SQ5, which comes with an upgraded suspension, as well as a 354-hp version of the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6. All-wheel drive is now standard on all Q5 crossovers, as is an eight-speed, paddle-shifted automatic.

Interiors and Special Features:

The Q5's cockpit derives its style from its lack of drama, its lack of subpar materials, and an absence of flashy cheapness. It's a universally pleasing, well-detailed execution that's common to just about every Audi interior. Like many of its brand mates, the Q5 has a rather wide center console, clearly differentiating the driver and front passenger areas, cockpit-style. The dash itself isn't all that curvy or claustrophobic--rather, it's more upright and forward, helping maximize a sense of space. A beautiful layered oak trim is now an option, elevating bits of the dash with a furniture-like finish.

Safety features:

Audi's Q5 continues to excel in crash tests for 2016, providing leading scores in most categories. It also offers an array of advanced safety tech, either as standard equipment or on the options sheet.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Audi Q5 four stars overall, with a five-star side-impact rating and four stars in front crash and rollover.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Q5 "Good" ratings in all categories now that it has been evaluated in the new small-overlap test. That, along with an "Advanced" rating for front crash prevention, qualify it for the agency's Top Safety Pick+ status. The Q5's Audi Pre Sense system brings the collision-prevention tech.
