2013 Kia Optima Sedan Reviewed

Ever since its initial launch, the newly transformed Optima has become one of the best looking vehicles in any class. Going on its third year of this design, seeing one on the street never gets old. This mid-size sedan was built with the looks and features to compete against the strongest vehicles in the class, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. In addition to its good looks, Kia cemented its popularity by making it one of the most well-equipped sedans it its class as well. However, the Optima faces stiff competition as the new Accord, Altima, and Fusion are all launching with completely new redesigns for 2013.

One of the outstanding features of the Kia Optima is its extensive lineup featuring three engines (including a hybrid) and an option for a manual transmission spanning over 7 trim levels. This gives a wide range of shoppers with different budgets a chance to drive an extremely well designed and equipped vehicle. The standard 2.0L engine produces 200 horsepower with its 4 cylinders, but enthusiasts will lean towards the turbocharged 4 cylinder generating 274 horsepower. Both gas engines get attractive gas mileage for its class, and provide ample power for this vehicle. One small drawback of the Optima is that it is only offered in a FWD configuration. Enthusiasts opting for the 274 horsepower engine would probably wish there was a RWD version, whereas Canadians tackling rough winters might have opted for an AWD version if it was available.

Sharing a platform with the Hyundai Sonata, the Optima somehow manages a more nimble drive, utilizing its power more effectively. The ride comfort leans on the firmer side compared to other similarly priced sedans, but it suits its sport look and nature. Probably because of its stunning exterior looks, the well-designed Optima interior rarely gets the attention it deserves. The seats are firm and supportive, and cooled seats are available as an option for the front, while cooled and heated seats are available for both rows.

Attention to detail and standard features are what make the Optima such a strong competitor in its segment. Some standard features include air conditioning, a cooling glove box for drinks, a trip computer, and steering wheel mounted controls for the audio, cruise control, and phone systems. For the tech savvy, Sirius satellite radio and Bluetooth are standard while a Microsoft designed UVO infotainment system is available on most trims. For buyers more focused on practicality, the Optima features 60/40 split folding rear seats and a power driver seat on all models.

Buyers looking for a sedan with class-leading looks, fuel economy, and a well-designed interior should not dismiss the 2013 Kia Optima. With a variety of trim levels to choose from, most buyers would be able to find a well-equipped Optima in their price range. Those looking to splurge for the SX model will find themselves owning a car with performance, fit and finish, and striking good looks only found on much higher priced vehicles.
