Quick Look

The 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country is the perfect blend between the V60 Cross Country and standard S60 series, though many claim to not appreciate its dynamic. Nonetheless, its outer profile is 2.5-inches taller, taking on the height of a crossover, and includes small features carried over from the V60 series while portraying the same sleek profile as is evident in the S60. Likewise, the interior is surprisingly comfortable up front but significantly lacks space in the backseat, resulting in less-than-stellar legroom and headroom, despite the extended wheelbase. However, passengers will appreciate the advanced electronic interface that is hosted on a seven-inch touchscreen amidst the center stack. Straying from the S60’s roots, this vehicle host’s only one drivetrain, that being a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine which produces 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres highway. Altogether, this is a great combination between two of Volvo’s best vehicles.

Full Review

The 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country blends the best features of the V60 Cross Country and standard S60 series, culminating in a seriously good-looking “cross-sedan” that is sure to turn heads on the road. The vehicle is impressively styled on the outside, featuring some sleek lines amidst the smooth sheet metal. On the inside, however, is a surprisingly comfortably cabin with tons of technical components at your fingertips, provided you’re sitting up front. There’s also an energetic engine unit under the hood that is great for both everyday and accelerated driving, depending on your preference. Overall, the brand new Volvo is a serious contender in the luxury range.

This year’s S60 Cross Country effectively incorporates the styling cues of the s60 and the height of the V60 Cross Country of which it draws inspiration, establishing the perfect aesthetic combination of the two vehicles. The cross-sedan receives 2.5-inches of height, under-body protection, wheel-arc cladding and SUV-like side skirts from the V60 Cross Country, but besides these features the new S60 Cross Country is almost identical to the standard S60. The outer profile benefits from a lengthened body structure and wheelbase, which contributes to the elongated roofline and rear windows. There are also more handsome modifications at the vehicle’s front end, like a smoothened hood with sharp creases over top and improved LED lighting. The overall outer profile of the S60 Cross Country flows cohesively and attractively.

Evidenced throughout the S60’s interior is a great appreciation for leisure and precise attention to detail. A healthy blend of leather, vinyl and plastic materials outfit the cabin, creating an upscale vibe for the entry-level luxury sedan. Wood and metal accents further contribute to the unique personality that runs throughout this vehicle. The vehicle seats up to five, but the front cabin seems to receive most of the leisure. Bolstered front seats are supportive and offer great comfort for long trips, but the back seats aren’t as accommodating and have limited legroom.

Volvo has generously equipped drivers with a variety of heat options, including a heated windshield and steering wheel, as well as front seats and windshield wiper nozzles. This is a totally unique feature and will undoubtedly assist drivers in colder climates. There is also a seven-inch colour touchscreen display embedded at the front that hosts Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system. The system bundles stereo, navigation, Bluetooth and smartphone integration, along with a variety of other convenient components. Additional features include a multi-function steering wheel and dual-zone climate control.

Unlike the regular S60 sedan, the Cross Country is outfitted with just one engine. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder that runs on standard all-wheel drive and six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The unit is decently powerful, delivering 250 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is to be expected for a large vehicle, however, as the S60 Cross Country offers 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres city and 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres highway.

The Volvo, noteworthy for being one of the safest vehicle brands, is outfitted with tons of safety features that are designed to protect both occupants and pedestrians. City Safety is an active system that helps avoid low-speed collisions in slow traffic, while Collision Warning and Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake both sense obstacles and automatically brake even when the driver does not. Also available is a self-parking feature and blind spot information system.

As it stands, the 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country combines the best of the V60 Cross Country and S60 series. This is an impeccably designed cross-sedan that features great comfort up front and tons of style.

Power and Performance:

Unlike the regular S60 sedan, the Cross Country comes with just one engine: the base T5 that’s also shared with the V60 Cross Country. The turbocharged, 2.5-liter, five-cylinder unit cranks out 250 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, which heads out to all four wheels as standard. A six-speed "Geartronic" automatic handles the shifting, and while Volvo has yet to release performance figures as of January 2015, I expect it to accelerate to 60 mph in under seven seconds and hit a top speed of 130 mph. For reference, the S60 T5 with AWD needs 6.6 second to reach 60 mph from a standing start.

Interiors and Special Features:

The interior of the Cross Country model mirrors the regular S60’s, meaning customers will be greeted by a modern and luxurious cabin with the typically Swedish attention to detail. Bolstered seats will provide the utmost comfort to the driver and front passenger, with critical information displayed by an all-new instrument cluster introduced with the redesigned S60 back in 2013. Leather surfaces, wood and aluminum trims adorn the interior of each trim level, including the base version.

Safety features:

Being a Volvo, the 2016 S60 starts with safety, including three active systems: City Safety helps avoid low-speed collisions in slow, stop-and-go traffic; Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake senses an impending collision and can brake to reduce the severity of a crash; and Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake that also auto-brakes. You can add Volvo's Park Assist Pilot self-parking feature to the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) package.
